Holy Family Catholic Church
is one of Tucson’s historic landmarks. Built in the Mission style in
1913 in the Hispanic Dunbar Springs neighborhood and close to the University of Arizona, it was consecrated
on Jan. 14, 1915 by Msgr. Henry R. Granjon, third Bishop of Tucson (1900-1922).
Holy Family Parish is Tucson’s oldest Catholic parish. Its first pastor Fr. Lucas of St. Joseph O.C.D. and his
associate Fr. Eduardo of the Child Jesus O.C.D. were beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on October 28 in 2007,
the Feast of Christ the King.
Today Holy Family Catholic Church is the home of both Holy Family Parish and St. Gianna Oratory with
the Traditional Latin Liturgy. Both communities are under the care of the Institute of Christ the King
Sovereign Priest. Blessed Lucas and Blessed Eduardo, pray for us!

Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration
at Holy Family Church/St. Gianna Oratory
On Monday December 12 Holy Family Parish and St. Gianna Oratory invite you to a festive celebration in
honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe in cooperation with the Fr. Kino Heritage Society. We are grateful to the
Diocesan newspaper The New Vision for advertising this important event:
At 6:15 p.m. there will be a blessing of roses in front of the church followed by hymns to Our Lady in English,
Spanish, and Latin. The roses will be laid in front of a special reproduction of an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe which bears the signature of the Cardinal of Mexico City. At 6:30 p.m. a Latin High Mass will follow with
an English and Spanish homily. Mass booklets in Latin/English and Latin/Spanish will be available for your use
during Mass. Following the Mass we will have a candlelight procession around the church and pray the Rosary
together. The procession will conclude in the basement church hall where the picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe
will be enthroned and the newly renovated hall will be consecrated to her.
A festive reception, prepared by the good cooks of the Parish and the Oratory. will follow. A local teenage Mariachi band will entertain the guests at the reception.
We look forward to seeing you!
Thank You Party for San Martin de Porres Fiesta Volunteers
This coming Saturday, December 3 we will have a thank you party for all of the volunteers who helped
at the San Martin de Porres Fiesta this past November 5/6. We will meet after the 4:00 p.m. Vigil Mass
(around 5:00 p.m.) in the church basement hall and we will enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner. This reception is for Fiesta helpers only and will serve also as a meeting to gather our experiences from this
past Fiesta in order to look ahead and set the date for next year’s Fiesta.
Letter from the Rector
November 27, 2011
Dear Faithful and friends of Holy Family Parish and of the Institute of Christ the King,
I hope that all of you have had a good Thanksgiving celebration with your families and friends! I had the joy of
being in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Thanksgiving together with seven of my confreres from Wisconsin, Chicago,
and Rockford, IL. The former archbishop of Milwaukee, Timothy Dolan, had entrusted the Institute of Christ the
King with the care of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, a formerly Polish parish in Milwaukee. Our apostolate there
comprises both an Oratory and a Parish, and it is thus, similar to our apostolate here at Holy Family Church. Both
our apostolates here and in Milwaukee are situated in Hispanic neighborhoods.
With this First Sunday of Advent, the new English translation of the Roman Missal is implemented in the United
States. I have purchased a beautiful English Missal for Holy Family Parish as well as a new Lectionary. I have
blessed these liturgical books and I hope that all of the faithful will enjoy the new translations which will be important improvements for the authenticity and dignity of the liturgical celebration.
I would like to wish all of the faithful at both the Oratory and the Parish a very blessed season of Advent! Advent
is a penitential time which prepares us for the great joy of Christmas. During Advent we will also prepare our
church further for Christ by fixing the large cracks in the outside walls, and remedying the water damage that occurred eight year ago in both sacristies and which has not yet been repaired. I am grateful to the four benefactors
who have enabled me to proceed with these repairs and I invite you to think also about our building fund at
church during your Christmas shopping.
With the assurance of my prayers, I am sincerely yours in Christ the King,
Canon Richard von Menshengen,
Parish Administrator and Rector of St. Gianna Oratory
The Institute of Christ the King offers you the opportunity to enroll yourself, your beloved ones, and your friends in a special Christmas Novena of Masses. This Mass Novena
will be celebrated at our Shrine of Christ the King in Chicago from December 24, 2011 to
January 1, 2012. You will have a choice between two novena cards with a beautiful Christmas
motif, which you can send as a gift to your relatives and friends. These cards are available
after the Latin Sunday Masses in front of the church and during the week at the Parish
office. If you cannot pick them up at these times, please email us to arrange pick up or
mailing of the cards: [email protected].
The suggested donation for an enrollment in this Novena of Christmas Masses is $5.00
(and you receive one novena Christmas card as a gift). For five enrollments we would ask
for a donation of $15.00 and offer you as a gift 5 cards. For ten enrollments we would ask for
$25 and offer ten cards as a gift.
Special envelopes will be available- together with the Christmas Novena Mass cards - in
front of the church and at the Parish office on which you can write or insert a list of your
intentions and add your donation to the envelope.
You can write several intentions for one envelope. You can also enroll your entire family with
one envelope. Your prayer intentions can also include the departed souls of your loved ones or
any intention that you may have. For each person, however, whom you enroll with a
separate envelope and donation you will receive a separate novena card that you can then
give to this person. Would this not be a thoughtful and kind Christmas gift?
We will collect your intentions and forward them for you to the Shrine of Christ the King
in Chicago. Enrolling someone in a Novena of Masses is a spiritual work of mercy and most
fitting for the Holy Season of Christmas in which God the Father gifted us with the birth of His
beloved Son Jesus Christ.
Christmas Novena of Masses

Institute of Christ the King
2
A Novena of Masses in honor of the Infant Jesus
will be offered at the Shrine of Christ the King in
Chicago from December 24, 2011 to January 1, 2012.
If you would like to enroll your family and friends as well as your
own intentions in this Christmas Novena, please visit with us
after the Latin Sunday Masses in front of the church or come to
the Parish office during office hours, starting Sunday, November
20. If this is difficult for you, you may also email us for pick up or
mailing arrangements.
A beautiful Christmas card comes with each enrollment.
The suggested donation for the enrollment
in the Christmas Novena is as follows:
$5 for one enrollment/Christmas card;
$15 per five enrollments/Christmas cards; or
$25 per ten enrollments/Christmas cards.
Updated Security Policy for Holy Family Church!
This past year burglars have broken into two Catholic Churches in Tucson and stolen collection donations. This month burglars were caught twice by one of the faithful when they
tried to break into the church basement at Holy Family Church. In addition to these two
attempts, we saw that unknown persons tried to break into one of the classrooms as well
as the religious supplies closet. Both doors were damaged and a report will be made to
the Diocese of Tucson by our church office. In order to protect the church better and to ensure safety we will reinforce the two basement entrance doors as well as the locks on these
doors. We also plan to install additional surveillance cameras both at the basement entrances,
in the basement itself, and in the Rectory courtyard. The groups which use our basement for
religious classes during the week are advised not to leave the main entrance door open
without constant supervision. Once the evening classes have started, the entrance door
needs to be locked and if participants arrive late they must knock at the door in order to
be allowed into the basement.
The elevator door has a special lock in the inside of the elevator which allows the faithful
to use the elevator to reach the basement. During Masses this lock in the elevator (priority control) needs to be off. This means that before and during the Masses no one is able to access the
basement from the outside through the elevator. It is only after the Masses that the ushers
will be allowed to open the elevator access to the basement briefly for those faithful who
like to go downstairs for coffee or breakfast. (The elevator will be open of course before
and during all Masses in order to access or leave the church). As long as the basement is
supervised by the Knights of Columbus or Timon de Fe who prepare breakfast, the elevator
access to the basement may remain open. Once they leave, they must lock the elevator access
to the basement and verify that all of the basement entrance doors are locked.
As administrator of Holy Family Parish, I will talk to the various groups who use our
basement, as well as to our sacristans and ushers, about the details of our reinforced security policy. At the same time, I want to advise all of the faithful not to give money to
any beggars who come into the church and approach the faithful for money. Such behavior is intrusive and highly disrespectful of the celebration of Mass or the prayer of the faithful.
We do so much for the poor here at Holy Family Church and beggars need to learn to respect
our church services as well as the privacy of the faithful. It is strictly forbidden to give money
to beggars on church grounds and those beggars who intrude will be excluded from our meal
program for two weeks. The ushers are advised to sit in the back of the church during
Mass and have a watchful eye on any beggars, or homeless who want to sleep in the pews,
or people who stop by the church just to use our restroom. We have a restroom on the
church parking lot which is routinely cleaned and for which we pay a monthly rent to the City
of Tucson.
Please help me to keep our church safe
and to keep away those who do not come here with honest intentions.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION!
August Queen of the Heavens,
Augusta Reina de los Cielos,
And Sovereign Mistress of the Angels,
Thou who from the beginning
Hast received from God
The power and the mission
To crush the head of Satan,
We humbly beseech Thee,
To send Thy Holy Legions, so that under
Thy Command and through Thy power,
They may pursue the demons,
And combat them everywhere,
Suppress their boldness,
And drive them back into the abyss.
Y Señora de los Angeles, a Ti que has
Recibido de Dios el poder y la mision
De aplastar la cabeza de Satanas,
Pedimos humildemente
Que envies legiones celestiales para
Que, bajo Tus ordenes, persigan a los
Demonios, los combatan por todas
Partes, repriman su audacia y los
Precipiten en los abismos.
Who is like God?
O good and tender Mother,
Thou wilt always be our love and hope!
O Mother of God, send Thy Holy Angels
To defend us, and to drive far away from
Us The cruel enemy.
Holy Angels and Archangels,
Defend us, guard us. Amen.
This prayer was dictated by the Blessed Virgin Mary
on Jan. 13, 1864 to Venerable Father Louis-Edouard
Cestac (1801-1868), Founder of the Congregation of
the Servants of Mary. The prayer was then submitted
to the Diocesan Bishop of Bayonne, France, Msgr.
François II Lacroix, who approved of it. On July 8,
1908 Pope St. Pius X granted a partial indulgence to
its recitation.

We ask you to please leave the

not take them home with you.
These Mass booklets are for the
use of all parishioners and visitors
to Mass. During the past several

We need to have a sufficient number of them available for all the
faithful to use during Mass.
Thank you for your consideration.

Molla,

First Sunday of Advent
This First Sunday of Advent or the Fourth before Christmas, is the first day of the Liturgical Year. The Mass prepares us this day for the double coming (adventus) of mercy and justice. That is why St. Paul tells us, in the Epistle, to cast off sin in order that, being ready for the coming of Christ as our Savior, we may also be ready for His
coming as our Judge, of which we learn in the Gospel. Let us prepare ourselves, by pious aspirations and by the
reformation of our lives, for this twofold coming. Jesus Our Lord will reward those who yearn for Him and await
Him: “Those who trust in Him shall not be confounded.”
INTROIT: Ps. 24: 1,3,4 To Thee have I lifted up my soul: in Thee, O my God, I put my trust, let me not be
ashamed: neither let my enemies laugh at me: for none of them that wait on Thee shall be confounded. (Psalm)
Show, O Lord, Thy ways to me: and teach me Thy paths. Glory be to the Father. To Thee have I lifted...
COLLECT: Stir up Thy power, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and come: that from the threatening dangers of our sins
we may deserve to be rescued by Thy protection, and to be saved by Thy deliverance: Who livest and reignest.
EPISTLE: Rom. 13: 11-14
Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans. It is now the hour for us to rise from sleep…
Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness...and walk honestly.
Brethren, knowing that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we
believed. The night is passed and day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the
armor of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy: but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ. Deo Gratias.
GOSPEL: Lk. 21: 25-33
† Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Luke. We learn in this Gospel of the second coming of Christ:
to render to each one according to his works.
At that time Jesus said to His disciples: There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon
the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves: men withering
away for fear and expectation of what shall come upon the whole world. For the powers of heaven shall be moved.
And then they shall see the Son of man coming in a cloud with great power and majesty. But when these things
begin to come to pass, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand. And He spoke to them
a similitude: See the fig tree and all the trees: when they now shoot forth their fruit, you know that summer is nigh.
So you also, when you shall see these things come to pass, know that the kingdom of God is at hand. Amen, I say
to you, this generation shall not pass away till all things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but My
words shall not pass away. Laus tibi Christe.
OFFERTORY: Ps. 24: 1,3 To Thee have I lifted up my soul: in Thee, O my God, I put my trust, let me not be
ashamed: neither let my enemies laugh at me: for none of them that wait on Thee shall be confounded.
SECRET: May these holy mysteries, O Lord, cleanse us by their powerful virtue and make us come with greater
purity to Him Who is their source. Through Our Lord.
COMMUNION: Pa. 84: 13 The Lord will give goodness: and our earth shall yield her fruit.
POSTCOMMUNION: May we receive, O Lord, Thy mercy in the midst of Thy temple, that we may prepare with
due honor for the approaching feast of our redemption. Through Our Lord.

Primer Domingo de Adviento B
Lecturas:
Isaias: 34: 63: 16b-17, 19; 64: 2b-7
Salmo: 80: 2-3, 4, 15-16, 18
1 Corintios 1: 3-9

Bl. Lucas y Bl. Eduardo, ruega por nosotros!
