First Sunday of Advent
The Church Teaches . . . Most of us are quite familiar with Jesus’ comments about faith, hope, and love. As we enter
the Advent season, it is a time for us to emphasize all three, but today’s readings in particular speak of hope. Isn’t that
what Advent is all about?
Many people in our world, perhaps even here in our parish and community, seem to have a feeling of hopelessness.
We should not be among them; worldly thinking produces hopelessness, but our hope is found in Jesus Christ who has
redeemed us and paid for all our sins on the Cross. In the first reading from today’s Mass the prophet Isaiah foresees a
time of peace, a time when all people literally “walk in the light of the Lord.” A phrase commonly quoted is included in
this reading: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” This ideal peaceful
world is exactly what we prepare for during this Advent time.
Think of how often we hear the word “peace” used at this time of year. Think of how many Christmas cards alone bear
that word. Peace produces hope and hope produces peace. That is the experience we are seeking at this time, as we prepare to declare “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.” The eminent French
author Alexandre Dumas (who wrote The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, among others) once wrote,
“All human wisdom is summed up in two words: wait and hope.” Is that not what we are called to do during Advent?
Make a special effort this year to see how Advent draws us from the past, through the present, to the bright and
promising future that awaits us. The Church asks us to reflect back and be encouraged in celebrating the anniversary
of the Lord’s first coming into this world. We ponder again the great mystery of the incarnation when the Lord humbled
Himself, taking on our humanity, and entered our time and space to free us from sin. All of that is of supreme importance each Sunday as we celebrate His living presence among us in the Eucharist. But we also recall that the Lord
will come again to judge the living and the dead and that we must be ready to meet Him. The light of the candles on our
Advent wreaths will represent Christ, who entered, enters, and will enter this world to scatter the darkness of evil and
show us the way of righteousness. The progression of lighting candles, we hope, will show our increasing readiness to
meet the Lord, now and in the end. Those candles will be an important symbol of our Advent hope!
Each of Us is the Invitation of Christ—The holidays are just ahead of us...are we willing to invite others to join us at
the greatest experience the greatest meal of all…the Eucharist? How can Christmas mean anything outside the context
of faith? Here are five simple words: “Come with me to Mass.” Invite someone to come see the beauty,
the peace, and the joy the whole Church and the Holy Cross parish community have in following Christ
Jesus. We each have someone in our family or among our friends whose heart is seeking what we have
found. For those searching, we have a small faith community called RCIA (Rites of Christian Initiation of
Adults), which supports those who wish to receive the Sacraments of the Church. RCIA meets every
Wednesday at 7pm at the parish office. Please call the parish staff or talk with Father Mark after Mass.
Update Us—If you have a loved one who is no longer able to come to Mass, has moved to a “care” facility, changed
residences or is hospitalized, please notify Angela at the parish office. We want to keep him/her in our prayers and be a
friendly voice from Holy Cross to keep in contact and provide Sacraments. Thank you!
May they Rest in Peace—Please pray during the final days of this month of All Souls, for all those people who have
gone before us. “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and
the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.”
December Senior Luncheon—All Seniors, please join us on Wednesday, December 7th at 11:30am in the school hall
for our monthly Senior Luncheon. We'll have a festive menu, accompanied by Advent reflections and Christmas carols.

If you have photos of a loved one still in the church, please take it home this weekend; we will start decorating the
church for Advent. Remaining photos will be placed underneath the statue of St. Mary. Thank you to Mike and Debbie

Advent—The liturgical season of Advent marks the time of spiritual preparation by the faithful before Christmas.
Advent begins on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle (Nov. 30). It spans four Sundays and four
weeks of preparation, although the last week of Advent is often truncated because of when Christmas falls. The focus of
the season is the coming of our Lord. (Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning coming.) The Catechism stresses
the two-fold meaning of this coming: “When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present
the ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful
renew their ardent desire for His second coming.” (No. 524) Let’s not forget, however, that He is constantly coming
among us in and through His grace!

DOCENARIO EN HONOR DE
LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE
Comenzaremos a rezar el Docenario de la Virgen de
Guadalupe el jueves, 1 de diciembre, aquí en el
sótano de la escuela. Todas las familias están
invitadas a acompañarnos y a participar en los días
siguientes de los rosarios que serán en diferentes
hogares de nuestro vecindario a las 6 de la tarde.
POSADAS PARROQUIALES
Como cada año estaremos realizando las posadas
parroquiales aquí en el sótano de la escuela cada día
a partir del 16 de diciembre hasta el 24 de diciembre
a las 6:30 de la tarde. Todas las familias están
invitadas a traer a sus niños para que participen de
esta hermosa tradición que tiene como propósito
recordar que Jesús es el centro de nuestras vidas.
Una vez más este año estaremos celebrando a Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe. Tendremos las tradicionales Mañanitas con el
Mariachi Azteca de Oro a las 5 de la mañana, seguidas de un
desayuno en el sótano de la escuela par a toda la comunidad.
Por la tarde comenzaremos con una Serenata en honor a la Virgen
de Guadalupe a las 6 de la tarde con el Mariachi México en la
Piel, seguida de la Santa Misa a las 6:30pm.
Es importante recordar que asistir a la Misa es la mejor manera
de agradecerle a Dios por el gran regalo de su Madre
con el que Él nos bendijo.
Después de la Misa tendremos una Presentación de la Historia de
la Virgen de Guadalupe, una Comida Comunitaria
acompañada del Mariachi México en la Piel.
Recuerde que nuestra celebración solo es posible con la ayuda de
cada uno de ustedes. Si desea colaborar de alguna manera como
voluntario, o con alguna donación económica, por favor
comuníquese lo más pronto posible a la oficina.

EL EVANGELIO DE ESTE DOMINGO…
Hay que salir al encuentro del Señor que se acerca; hay que hacerlo acompañado de las
buenas obras. Este es el punto central que unifica las lecturas de este primer domingo
de Adviento. El Señor volverá, esto es una certeza que nace de las palabras mismas de
Cristo en el Evangelio. Sin embargo, no conocemos ni la hora ni el día de su llegada.
Por eso la actitud propia del cristiano es la de una amorosa vigilancia. Más aún, ante el
Señor que se avecina hay que salir a su encuentro llenos de entusiasmo, hay que
despertarse del sueño y ver que el día está por despuntar. Así como al amanecer todo se despierta y se llena de nueva
esperanza, así la vida del cristiano es un continuo renacer a una nueva vida en la luz. La visión del profeta Isaías resume
espléndidamente la actitud propia para este Adviento: estamos invitados a salir al encuentro del Señor que nos instruye
en sus caminos y salir a su encuentro iluminados por la luz que irradia el amor de Dios por cada uno de nosotros.
La belleza y el valor de la vida presente. El mundo agitado que nos ha tocado vivir invita, no pocas veces, a la tristeza y
al pesimismo. El cúmulo de noticias de guerra, muertes, y violaciones crean en el ánimo no sólo un desencanto, sino un
verdadero decaimiento anímico y espiritual. La contemplación serena y profunda del adviento del Señor es una
invitación a no dejarnos llevar por esta tentación. Por encima de las apariencias de este mundo y de sus miserias está la
promesa y el amor de Dios, por encima de la noche obscura que nos rodea está el amanecer de un nuevo día y una nueva
esperanza. Dios no abandona al hombre en sus tinieblas y en su obscuridad, Dios no se desentiende de un mundo en
peligro. Él mismo viene a rescatarnos porque tanto amó Dios al mundo que envió a su Hijo Unigénito. No miremos ya
más las tinieblas, pues nada bueno de ellas obtendremos, volvamos nuestra mirada al rostro de Cristo, revistámonos en
nuestro ser y en nuestras obras de Cristo el Señor. La vida presente tiene un valor de redención, en ella vamos
construyendo la parte que nos corresponde en la obra de la salvación. Esta vida mortal es, a pesar de sus vicisitudes y
sus oscuros misterios, su sufrimiento, su fatal caducidad, un hecho bellísimo, un prodigio siempre original y
conmovedor, un acontecimiento digno de ser cantado con gozo y con gloria: ¡La vida, la vida del hombre!
CONCURSO DE NACIMIENTOS…
Una vez más este año estamos
invitando a todos los niños de
nuestra parroquia a participar de
esta hermosa actividad parroquial.
Invitamos a todos los niños y sus
familias a hacer un Nacimiento
con los personajes representativos del nacimiento de Jesús
en el establo: El Niño Dios, José, María, los Ángeles, los
pastores, el buey, el burro, los borregos, la estrella, y el
pesebre.
Muchas veces, poco a poco, nos vamos olvidando del
verdadero significado de la Navidad. Nos olvidamos que el
personaje principal y único es y debe de ser Jesús. Nos
preocupamos por los regalos, las decoraciones, las luces, y
en nuestra casa no queda un pequeño espacio para poner un
nacimiento que nos recuerde a nosotros, pero sobretodo que
enseñe a nuestros hijos que es Jesús el que estamos esperando
durante esta época Navideña.
La imaginación es el límite, usted puede usar materiales que
tenga en su casa para hacer cada uno de los personajes del
nacimiento: papel, tela, cartón, figuras, plantas. El domingo 4
de diciembre todos los niños deber án de tr aer su nacimiento al sótano de la escuela, habrá mesas donde colocarlos.
Después de Misa bajar emos al sótano y compar tir emos
nuestros hermosos nacimientos con toda la comunidad. El
Padre Mark bendecirá todos los nacimientos. Lo más importante: podremos llevarlo al hogar y tenerlo en algún lugar
especial durante la época de Navidad. Habrá pequeños
premios para los niños y sus familias que traigan nacimientos.
EL TIEMPO DEL ADVIENTO…
El Adviento es el primer periodo del año litúrgico
cristiano, que consiste en un tiempo de preparación
para el nacimiento de Cristo. Su duración puede variar
de 21 a 28 días, dado que se celebran los cuatro
domingos más próximos a la festividad de Navidad.
Los fieles lo consideran un tiempo de reflexión y de
perdón.
Durante este tiempo se exhorta a los fieles
a prepararse dignamente para celebrar el aniversario de
la venida del Señor al mundo como el Dios de Amor
Encarnado, de manera que sus almas sean moradas
adecuadas al Redentor que viene en la Sagrada
Comunión y a través de la gracia, y de este modo
prepararlos para su venida final como juez, en
la muerte y en el fin del mundo.
Durante el Adviento, se coloca en las iglesias y
también en algunos hogares una corona de ramas de
pino, llamada Corona de Adviento, con cuatro velas,
una por cada domingo de Adviento. Hay una pequeña
tradición de Adviento: a cada una de esas cuatro velas
se le asigna una virtud que hay que mejorar en esa
semana, por ejemplo: la primera, el amor; la segunda,
la paz; la tercera, la tolerancia; y la cuarta, la fe.
Recuerden que estaremos haciendo Coronas de
Adviento el domingo 27 de noviembre de las 9-12
de día. Habrá base y velas de venta. Nosotros
proveeremos las ramas verdes y algunas decoraciones.
