euros),

Spanish Wholesalers: Don’t Blame
Us for the Olive Oil Crisis - Spain’s
powerful food wholesalers have hit
back at claims that they are causing the
country’s olive oil price crisis.
Growers and producers blame these
distribution
groups
for
allowing
supermarkets to under-price olive oil as
a consumer bait, undermining its
prestige and worsening the sector’s
already precarious situation.
But in an article in the newspaper
Diario de Sevilla, the distributors say
the price tension is not their fault,
though they do admit that olive oil – a
staple in Spanish kitchens – lends itself
to price wars.

Spain Pulls Ahead in Olive Oil Sales
to China - The battle for dominance
within China’s olive oil market is still
very much underway but Spanish
producers are now said to be pushing
ahead. The Chinese are the world’s
leading importers of olive oil and until
recently the main bulk of their supply
had come from Italian producers.
According to the Spanish news agency,
El Mundo, the balance has now tilted
toward Andalusia, with Spain managing
to secure almost half (49 percent) of
China’s olive oil imports. Andalusia, as
Spain’s leading producer of oil, is said
to account for 82 percent of Spanish
virgin and extra virgin olive oil
purchased by the Asian giant.

(43,4%), Rusia (35,6%) y Brasil
(23,8%), como destinos de recepción
de aceite de oliva español.
Las exportaciones supusieron, al cierre
del pasado ejercicio, 1.953 millones de
euros, un 25,2% más que el año
anterior, marcando así un nuevo récord
en ventas internacionales de aceite.
España consolida así su posición como
primer productor y exportador de la UE.
En los últimos años, se han superado
los cupos de producción fijados por las
autoridades comunitarias, alcanzando
en 2010 los 1.400 millones de
toneladas, muy por delante de sus
principales competidores Italia –
460.000 toneladas– y Grecia –360.000
toneladas–.

Italy trains gourmet police officers
to sniff out olive oil fraud - The 20
officers have just graduated from a
course in which they were taught to
distinguish fake extra-virgin oil from the
real thing.
While customers pay a premium for
Italian extra-virgin olive oil, often it is
neither Italian nor extra-virgin, but
lower quality oil brought in by tanker
truck and ship from Spain, Greece or
Tunisia.
During an intensive training course
arranged by the National Olive Oil
Association, the police officers were
schooled in how to detect an oil's
provenance just by taste.
"This initiative will strengthen the
defence of the quality of one of the
symbols of the Mediterranean diet,"
said Massimo Gargano, the head of the
association.

Huile d’olive au Maroc : la
production doublera d’ici à 2020 La production annuelle moyenne d’huile
d’olive des dix dernières campagnes
s’est située aux environs de 2,7 millions
de tonnes. L’Union européenne est le
premier producteur mondial, avec 77 %
de la production d’huile d’olive. Selon
les statistiques de l’Agropole olivier de
Meknès, la consommation moyenne
d’huile d’olive au cours des 10 dernières
campagnes a atteint 2 706 000 tonnes.
«Cette consommation évolue de
manière plus régulière dans le temps
que la production», est-il indiqué
auprès de l’Agropole. En tout cas, le
Maroc, rappelons-le, va doubler sa
production d’huile d’olive d’ici 2020.
agricole
marocain,
couvre
une
superficie d’environ 620 000 ha.

Change in the Air at California
Olive Oil Council Meeting - A turnout
larger than the California Olive Oil
Council (COOC) has seen in years
gathered Saturday, March 5 in
Monterey for the organization’s annual
meeting. It wasn’t the numbers alone,
however, that made the event a
success. The energy and enthusiasm
was high as members participated in a
dynamic program of events, including
seminars and a trade show complete
with an olive oil competition. Certainly
the election of six open board seats
contributed to the attendance and
definitely stirred the excitement as well.

Pakistan: Govt developing olive
orchards on 1,500 hectares - The
government has allocated Rs382.15
million to increase production of oilseed
by developing olive orchards on 1,500
hectares in three years to reduce edible
oil import.
“Achieving self-sufficiency in oilseed
production is our priority,” said Federal

of Pakistan Oilseed Development Board
(PODB) on converting wild olive trees
into
fruit-bearing
plants
and
establishing new olive orchards.
The minister said that olive orchard
development has already started at 400
hectares in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 300
hectares in Federally Administered
Tribal Areas (FATA), 500 hectares in
Balochistan and 300 hectare in Potohar.
The development is part of the
‘Promotion of Olive Cultivation for

Argentina’s Olive Oil Industry
Continues to Face Challenges - The
situation has only gotten bleaker for
Argentina’s flailing olive oil industry,
which despite performing well at
international food competitions in
recent years finds itself in a financial
predicament driven by stagnant market
prices and rising production costs,
among other factors.
The recent crisis came to the
government’s
attention
in
early
January,
when
agricultural
representatives
in
Argentina’s
Catamarca province requested federal
aid after declaring a state of
emergency. The government responded
by exempting olive producers in the
region from paying municipal taxes and
fees over the next six months.
