PARISH ACTIVITIES
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
On February 2, exactly 40 days after Christmas we celebrate
the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This year, of course,
we celebrate it on this Sunday.
During the Christmas season, I have read the book by Benedict XVI on the Infancy of Jesus. It is the third volume of his
work Jesus of Nazareth. It is a very interesting short book and
I wholeheartedly recommend it to you. In it the Pope Emeritus
offers in a very succinct yet eloquent way great insights about
the infancy narratives in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke that
are very useful for our spiritual life. Naturally, he also discusses
the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple.
Traditionally, this is the day when many religious make their
vows across different congregations. That is why this day has
also been designated as a special day to celebrate and meditate
on the consecrated life. It is also traditional on this day for the
Pope to address a message to all Christians but especially the
religious who have consecrated their lives to Christ and His
Church.
I offer a fragment of the last message of Pope Benedict for the
World Day of Consecrated Life. In it he explains some aspects
of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple that, perhaps, we
were not aware of and are also included in the book I recommended.
“In his account of the infancy of Jesus St Luke emphasizes
how faithful Mary and Joseph were to the Law of the Lord.
They fulfilled with profound devotion all the prescriptions prescribed following the birth of a firstborn male. Two of them
were very ancient prescriptions: one concerns the mother and
the other the newborn child. The woman was required to abstain
from ritual practices for forty days, after which she was to offer
a double sacrifice: a lamb as a burnt offering and a turtle-dove
as a sin offering; but if she were poor, she could offer a pair of
turtle doves or two young pigeons.
St Luke explained that Mary and Joseph offer the sacrifice of
the poor in order to emphasize that Jesus was born into a family of simple people, lowly but of steadfast faith: a family that
belonged to the poor of Israel who form the true People of God.
For the first-born male who, according to Mosaic Law, was set
apart for God, redemption was prescribed instead, established
as an offering of five shekels to be paid to a priest in any place.
This was in everlasting memory of the fact that in the time of
Herod God saved the firstborn of the Jews.
It is important to note that these two acts — the purification
of the mother and the redemption of the son — did not require a
visit to the Temple. However, Mary and Joseph wished to fulfill
all the prescriptions in Jerusalem, and St Luke shows us how
the entire scene converges on the Temple and thus focuses on
Jesus who enters it. And it is here, precisely through the prescriptions of the Law, that the principal event is transformed,
namely, it becomes the “presentation” of Jesus in the Temple of
God, which means the act of offering the Son of the Most High to the
Father who sent him...
The Child Jesus, who is immediately presented in the Temple, is the
same person who, as an adult, would purify the Temple. Above all
he would make himself the sacrifice and the High Priest of the new
Covenant.

This is also the perspective of the Letter to the Hebrews, to strengthen the theme of the new priesthood: a priesthood — inaugurated by
Jesus — which is existential: “For because he himself has suffered
and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted”. So it is
that we also discover the topic of suffering, very pronounced in the
Gospel passage in which Simeon imparts his prophecy concerning
both the Child and the Mother: “Behold, this Child is set for the fall
and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against
(and, [to Mary], a sword will pierce through your own soul also)”.
The “salvation” that Jesus brought to his people, and which he embodies in himself, passed through the Cross, through the violent
death that he was to vanquish and to transform with the sacrifice of
his life through love. This sacrifice was already foretold in the act of
the Presentation in the Temple, an act without any doubt motivated
by the traditions of the old Covenant, but that was deeply enlivened
by the fullness of faith and love, which correspond to the fullness of
time, to the presence of God and of his Holy Spirit in Jesus. Indeed,
the Spirit moved over the whole scene of the presentation of Jesus in
the Temple and in particular over Simeon, but also over Anna.
The Spirit “Paraclete” brings consolation to Israel and motivates the
steps and moves the hearts of those who await him. He is the Spirit
who prompted the prophetic words of Simeon and Anna, words of
blessing and praise of God, of faith in his Anointed One, of thanksgiving, for at last our eyes could see and our arms embrace “your
salvation”.”

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:
El día 2 de febrero, exactamente 40 días después de Navidad
se celebra la fiesta de la Presentación del Señor. Este año, por
supuesto, la celebramos este domingo.
Durante el tiempo de Navidad estuve leyendo el libro de Benedicto XVI sobre la Infancia de Jesús. Se trata del tercer volumen
de su obra Jesús de Nazaret. Es sumamente interesante y se los
recomiendo de todo corazón. En él el papa emérito ofrece de
manera sucinta pero muy elocuente intuiciones sobre los relatos
de la infancia que aparecen en los Evangelios de san Lucas y san
Mateo de gran provecho para la vida espiritual. Obviamenteincluyen la Presentación del Niño Jesús en el Templo.
Tradicionalmente en este día muchos religiosos hacen sus votos
en las distintas congregaciones. Por eso este día también fue designado como un día especial para celebrar y reflexionar sobre la
vida consagrada y es tradicional que el Papa prepare un mensaje
dirigido a todos los cristianos, pero de manera especial a los religiosos que han consagrado su vida a Cristo y a su Iglesia.
Les ofrezco un fragmento delúltimo mensaje del papa Benedicto
para la Jornada Mundial de la Vida Consagrada en el cual explica
algunos aspectos de la Presentación del Señor en el Templo como
los que comenta en el libro que les recomiendo, en los que tal vez
nunca hemos reparado.
“En su relato de la infancia de Jesús, san Lucas subraya cuán
fieles eran María y José a la ley del Señor. Con profunda devoción llevan a cabo todo lo que se prescribe después del parto de
un primogénito varón. Se trata de dos prescripciones muy antiguas: una se refiere a la madre y la otra al niño neonato. Para la
mujer se prescribe que se abstenga durante cuarenta días de las
prácticas rituales, y que después ofrezca un doble sacrificio: un
cordero en holocausto y una tórtola o un pichón por el pecado;
pero si la mujer es pobre, puede ofrecer dos tórtolas o dos pichones. San Lucas precisa que María y José ofrecieron el sacrificio de los pobres, para evidenciar que Jesús nació en una familia de gente sencilla, humilde pero muy creyente: una familia
perteneciente a esos pobres de Israel que forman el verdadero
pueblo de Dios. Para el primogénito varón, que según la ley de
Moisés es propiedad de Dios, se prescribía en cambio el rescate,
establecido en la oferta de cinco siclos, que había que pagar a un
sacerdote en cualquier lugar. Ello en memoria perenne del hecho
de que, en tiempos del Éxodo, Dios rescató a los primogénitos
de los hebreos.
Es importante observar que para estos dos actos —la purificación de la madre y el rescate del hijo— no era necesario ir
al Templo. Sin embargo María y José quieren hacer todo en Jerusalén, y san Lucas muestra cómo toda la escena converge en el
Templo, y por lo tanto se focaliza en Jesús, que allí entra. Y he
aquí que, justamente a través de las prescripciones de la ley, el
acontecimiento principal se vuelve otro: o sea, la «presentación»
de Jesús en el Templo de Dios, que significa el acto de ofrecer al
Hijo del Altísimo al Padre que le ha enviado…
El niño Jesús, que enseguida presentan en el Templo, es
el mismo que, ya adulto, purificará el Templo y sobre todo
hará de sí mismo el sacrificio y el sumo sacerdote de la nueva
Alianza.
Esta es también la perspectiva de la Carta a los Hebreos…
de forma que se refuerza el tema del nuevo sacerdocio: un sacerdocio —el que inaugura Jesús— que es existencial: «Pues,
por el hecho de haber padecido sufriendo la tentación, puede
auxiliar a los que son tentados». Y así encontramos también
el tema del sufrimiento, muy remarcado en el pasaje evangélico, cuando Simeón pronuncia su profecía acerca del Niño
y su Madre: «Este ha sido puesto para que muchos en Israel
caigan y se levanten; y será como un signo de contradicción
—y a ti misma [María] una espada te traspasará el alma». La
«salvación» que Jesús lleva a su pueblo y que encarna en sí
mismo pasa por la cruz, a través de la muerte violenta que Él
vencerá y transformará con la oblación de la vida por amor.
Esta oblación ya está preanunciada en el gesto de la presentación en el Templo, un gesto ciertamente motivado por las
tradiciones de la antigua Alianza, pero íntimamente animado
por la plenitud de la fe y del amor que corresponde a la plenitud de los tiempos, a la presencia de Dios y de su Santo Espíritu en Jesús. El Espíritu, en efecto, aletea en toda la escena
de la presentación de Jesús en el Templo, en particular en la
figura de Simeón, pero también de Ana. Es el Espíritu «Paráclito», que lleva el «consuelo» de Israel y mueve los pasos y
el corazón de quienes lo esperan. Es el Espíritu que sugiere las
palabras proféticas de Simeón y Ana, palabras de bendición,
de alabanza a Dios, de fe en su Consagrado, de agradecimiento
porque por fin nuestros ojos pueden ver y nuestros brazos estrechar «su salvación».”

The Scriptures are unambiguous about God’s concern for the poor. Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor
in your land (Deut. 15:11; Isa. 58:6-12. As the example of the saints has taught us, in loving and serving the poor,
we too love and serve Jesus Himself.
If you have not already responded to Archbishop Wenski’s letter received by mail, please take time to consider the
pledge you will wish to make, a pledge that gives witness to your gratitude for God’s blessings in your life.
Your generous and unwavering support of the ABCD is a witness to your faith. We ask for your continued support
by making a sacrificial pledge and join together to be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity. Thank you.

Las Escrituras son inequívocas acerca de la preocupación de Dios por los pobres. Debes abrir tu mano a tu prójimo
pobre y necesitado (Deut. 15:11; Isa. 58:6-12). Como el ejemplo de los santos nos ha enseñado, al amar y servir a
los pobres, también amamos y servimos al propio Jesús.
Si usted no ha respondido a la carta del Arzobispo Wenski recibida por correo, por favor, tómese el tiempo necesario
para considerar la promesa que desea hacer, una promesa que dé testimonio de su gratitud por las bendiciones que
Dios ha puesto en su vida.
