Revitalising the improvement based on a new organisational model that focuses on two
main aspects, product and customer, is an objective that we all pursue and whose fruits
are essential to respond to the growing demands of our market.
The changes are progressively taking place in the organisation and all of them must be
fully operative after the summer break. Our managers are making a considerable effort
to implement these changes and I wish take the opportunity to thank them for the
extraordinary work they are doing.
All changes represent the commencement of new improvement opportunities. If the
changes are efficiently managed, we will be able to foreseen the difficulties to know how
to overcome them, and we will become aware of the opportunities in order to take
advantage of them.
The greatest opportunities may come from improving the interfaces, which have been
more problematic in the past
Integrating our Commercial Development and Production Areas with common goals and
responsibilities is a basic objective for the New Organisation and, to a great extent our
improvement will depend on them being fulfilled.
...in first person
José Manuel Temiño Chief Executive Officer
To attain these goals and responsibilities we must act bravely and proactively, giving powers and competences to those who, regardless of whether they belong to Central or
Peripheral Departments or Production Plants, are, due to their knowledge, better
equipped to respond to the work requirements.
The only intelligent way of facing up to these challenges is to use the right resources,
wherever they may be, and these must be used without any kind of restriction.
I am convinced that this intelligent attitude is going to prevail in our acts and that the
remodelling of the organisation is going to dynamise the integration of our creative and
management potential, using the knowledge of our entire human team to overcome the
important challenges that the automotive sector, and consequently our company, are
submitted to.

Briefly-speaking, Grupo Antolin started
its project for the future in China at the
beginning of the new century, encouraged, doubtless to say, by the profound
changes that country was going through,
both in economic terms in general, with
China's entry in the WTO, and also in the
automobile sector in particular, where annual growth rates for the production of
passenger vehicles were over 30%. In just
a short while, China has gone from being
the great unknown for the vast majority
of people to appearing every day as frontpage news.
In 2001, an agreement was reached for
cooperation with a local firm supplying components by means of a contract to transfer
technology and know-how, which enabled
us to approach the market from a privileged
position, full of tremendous expectations,
while at the same time being quite “unfamiliar” with it. In this way, it has been possible for us to be active witnesses of the spectacular growth that has taken place over the
last few years, and of the profound change
mentioned above that has occurred in the
automobile sector with the arrival of all the
main actors in this country.

The staff is
currently made
up of 34 people,
although this
number is
expected to rise
to 200 people by
the year 2008
More recently, the Group decided to build
a Technico-Commercial Department in
Shanghai for the purposes of strengthening its presence in the country and hence
develop a series of activities that will undoubtedly lead to a subsequent step that
is noticeably more ambitious, such as the
creation of our own industrial presence
in such an active, dynamic market, which
nowadays is considered to be a key factor in the global market of the car industry.
Today, this project has now become a reality with Grupo Antolin opening an industrial plant, Antolin Shanghai Autoparts,
in the city of Jiading (known as the Automobile City), where overhead systems are
now currently being manufactured. The
plant has a constructed area of 5,200 sq m,
erected on a site measuring 11,200 sq m,
with a production capacity for 1,000,000
roofs per year. It currently has a staff of 34
people, although it is envisaged that this
number will rise to 200 by the year 2008.
Current projects are Ford C307 (China+Taiwan), Mazda J48, Ford Galaxy, Nissan X11J
(China+Taiwan), Suzuki K5 and Isuzu Elf for
Japan. Negotiations are also at a fairly advanced stage for new projects with Ford
(Mondeo and B-car), Mazda and the local manufacturer, Cherry.
Furthermore, during the recent month
of April, we formed a new company in
Chongqing for assembling modular roofs.
This involves a mixed company with a lo-

of Chongqing Antolin Tuopu Overhead

ture of seats for the Mercedes NCV2,
along with other agreements for manufacturing seats for the railway.
It is our firm intention to promote our resources to the utmost in the area so as
to take advantage of all the opportunities that might arise. In keeping with this
approach, we already have a new industrial activity in the North of China that is in
a very advanced stage of development and
close to becoming a reality, for producing electric windows and door modules
over there. We are also concluding an
agreement for the transfer of technology with a local company for the manufac-
We must not forget that it is important for
us to make the most of our presence in
China to increase the significant purchasing opportunities that are around for exporting components from China to other centres run by the Group in the rest
of the world. This task is obviously of paramount importance for us to be able to
maintain the competitive levels that are
constantly being demanded by our customers.
Nevertheless, we should also point out
that there are serious problems to be had
in entering this market. The obvious cultural differences, the clear symptoms of
overcapacity, provoking an extremely difficult price war and the significant weight
still given to personal relations in the
process of obtaining orders (Guang-Xi)
all offer important challenges. We are
fully aware of such problems and are convinced of the appropriateness of this challenge, and that we shall be able to carry
it off successfully.
We would not like to finish without expressing our sincerest thanks to all those
people in our Group that, whether directly or indirectly, have contributed both
in China and in Spain to making the distant dream of establishing our presence in
China come true.

DESIGNING THE FUTURE
Clase A
Surfaces
Industrial Design is a creative process, and as such uses
various tools throughout the different stages. In moving
from 2D (outlines, sketches) to 3D (modeling)it becomes
a very important part of the process. During this phase,
creativity and initial ideas are converted into stylish
surfaces. Being able to guarantee the quality of such
surfaces, and also meet feasibility requirements are thus
factors of paramount importance.
Héctor Gutiérrez / Silvia Pérez
GRUPO ANTOLIN-INGENIERIA-DIM
We are all aware of the fact that today's
products are not only designed to comply
with functional factors, but that it is also
becoming more and more important to
look after their aesthetic or visual appearance in order to attract the user.
Visual appearance constitutes a competitive advantage that distinguishes
between two products with the same
features and technical specifications.
The aim of a good surface modeler is to
comply with all feasibility requirements,
while maintaining the design that was
originally conceived in the creative phases

beforehand, and at the same time to
maximize the time available, this being a
crucial factor for achieving a greater
degree of competitiveness on the market.
To meet this commitment the concept of
“Class A Surfaces” has emerged for the
face of the products.
Class A is synonymous with geometrical
continuity. There can be different types of
continuity: tangency, position and curvature. What is important is that the best
quality is always obtained through surfaces
that are continuous, regular and simple,
thereby maximizing resources.
Internal Project by the Dept. of Design
Criteria that help guarantee surface quality
For this reason, Class A surfaces have
to comply with the following conditions:
1. Aesthetic conditions, keeping the
forms proposed by the designer and/or
customer in line with appropriate polishing lines.
Interpretation of polishing lines
2. Mathematical conditions, the simplest
connection possible between surfaces
and mathematic equation.
3. Adequate conditions for production
and feasibility of design.
In order to achieve the quality required,
apart from using the Alias Studio Tools
program, the Department of Industrial
Design at Grupo Antolin has started
modeling with ICEM Surf, one of the
most advanced pieces of software that
exist for creating Class A surfaces.
At the same time, the ICEM Surf program also offers a perfect link with other software packages (CATIA, I-DEAS,
ALIAS, etc).
Based on the initial sketches, it is possible to obtain high-quality surfaces right
from the first stage in the process of creating a product.
Using its tools for modeling, analysis and
diagnosis, it is possible to achieve a thorough control of the aesthetic and technical aspects of the surfaces contained
in the model.
Diagnosis of curvature
Types of transitions from geometric objects to planes of symmetry
Plane of Symmetry
Original geometry

Continuous transition
However, a powerful tool for creating surfaces is useless without the good criteria of the modeling team and designers.
Plane of Symmetry
Due to the importance acquired by the
perceived quality of the car interior, our
customers are becoming more and more
discerning and demanding. Being ready
and able to offer the right answer at their
level of expectation is fundamental.
Transition of continuous tangency

Transition of continuous curve
As can be seen in the picture, continuity between two surfaces
may be at the point of tangency and curvature depending on
how the control points are aligned.

SPECIAL
Latest trends
towards a new form of segmentation
It used to be easy to slice up the
segments of the “pie” for the car industry
into five or six portions of varying sizes.
Nowadays, however, this pie is divided
into so many portions, that it is difficult
to say exactly how many there are. There
are niches inside other niches...
Rosalía Arribas Grupo Antolin-DIM
Fifty years ago, life was much easier for
analysts in the car industry. Manufacturers
built and sold vehicles in two basic sizes:
apart from trucks, they came in small and
large, and that was the end of it.
But apart from the size, it is the body styles
that lead to the greatest amount of confusion nowadays. Not so long ago it was no
problem to classify the basic types: coupé,
convertible, sedan,
Later on, as the range and type of vehicles on offer increased, it became popular
to use letters to refer to the various different segments, a labeling system that is still
used by car rental firms today. From “A”,
referring to the segment of vehicles that are
smaller in size and have fewer features, and
then “C”, for medium-sized vehicles, and
finally to “F” for real luxury cars and “G”
for sports cars.
compact, family car or break, and minivan.
Then the four-wheel drives, or SUVs (Sport
Utility Vehicles), burst onto the scene in a big
way, along with the MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicles); with these two segments being sub-

divided in turn into a number of different
niches so that the range on offer could be
customized to satisfy the various requirements of the most demanding clients.
Nowadays, we can say that the number of
segments has grown to 20 in Europe, a
growth rate that shows no sign of abating at
the moment. In an attempt to shed a little
light on the intricate world of segmentation,
on the next page we refer to the newest and
most original segments of the market
Crossover
A light-weight variant of the four-wheel drive, or SUV with the features of a compact vehicle. This is a trend that is on the rise; in 4 or 5 years'
time nearly all manufacturers will offer this type of model. Examples
include the Nissan Murano and the Honda C-RV.
Nissan Murano
Audi Allroad
Honda C-RV
Sport Wagon
Vehicles with the morphology of a family car (more luggage space, or
more headroom), but as functional as an SUV. By way of example, we can
mention the Audi Allroad and the Volvo XC70.
Multi Activity Vehicle
Chrysler Pacífica
Volvo XC70
Vehicles that combine the features of a monospace vehicle with the sportiness of a four-wheel-drive. Examples:The Chrysler Pacific or the Mazda 5.
Mini MPV
Ford Focus C-Max
These are small monospace vehicles derived from a compact vehicle.
Notable examples include the Ford Focus C-Max or the Renault Scenic,
derived from the Megane. Even the smallest vehicles have a mini MPV derivative: the Opel Meriva was based on the Corsa, the Ford Fusion on
the Fiesta and the Renault Modus on the Clio.
Mazda 5
MultiSpace
These are sedans that are derived from minivans, and were pioneered by the
French with the Kangoo, Berlingo and Partner, models which were born in a
more or less rudimentary fashion, but which are gradually becoming more and
more sophisticated.
Opel Meriva
Renault Modus
Other variants
Renault Kangoo
These vehicles each offer different versions depending on the make, but since there are so many of them, they should best be left for another debate:“Sport
Activity Vehicles”, “Urban Activity Vehicles”, “Compact Sports Tourer”,
“Space Functional Concepts”.
According to JD Power,a forecasting consultancy for the car industry, last year over 3 million “niche vehicles” were sold in Europe,
which amounts to an increase of 17% with
respect to the previous year. At the same time
there was a 6% drop in the sale of traditional versions like compact vehicles, sedans
and family cars.
What is the reason for this phenomenon? One of the main reasons is the
increase in the speed with which a model can move from the initial stages of design to production thanks to the progress
made in CAD-type technologies. What
used to take 30 to 36 months can now be
done in 20 to 24 months, and according
to some manufacturers, this figure might
soon be whittled down to 18 months.
How is Grupo Antolin tackling this
situation? The Group is well aware of the
trends in the market and is working on a
number of projects to be incorporated in
niche vehicles.
Such projects require intelligent, unique
solutions that are a one-off and can be
adapted to spaces that are becoming more
and more diverse and intricate: enormous
overhead consoles, original panoramic systems, adjustable seats, more versatile sunvi-
sors, light-weight materials, etc. Solutions
that require continuous effort for their conception on the part of the Departments of
Marketing, Design and Innovation, in the
analysis of supply and demand and the increasingly more sophisticated needs of our
customers.
Most of the activities set up in these departments lead to a greater understanding of
what the end user expects from these niche
vehicles: analyses of Perceived Value, studies on ergonomics, exploring new trends,
virtual designs, etc. all place value on the
wishes and needs of the end customer so
that we can bring them to fruition.

THE HISTORY CORNER
The generation
of the people's car
BEETLE
“Volkswagen”
Nowadays Volkswagen employs more
than 133,000 workers all over the world
and amongst its vehicles includes
models such as the Golf, the Passat or
the Polo, and upper range models like the
Phaeton and the Touareg. Seven models
of the Beetle and a total number of five
generations of Golf are milestones in the
history of this development. A total of 21.5
million Beetles, 23 million Golfs, 13 million
Passats and 9 million Polos are the best
proof of its success.
We shall now turn our attention briefly
to the years that have marked the history of this car-manufacturer.
The “BEETLE” is born
The history of Volkswagen begins with the
legendary Beetle. In 1934, the German
government receives a proposal for a design from Ferdinand Porsche to develop
a car intended for the people, ("Volkswagen” in German). Thus is born one
of the best-known symbols of the German
car industry. However, it will not be until
1938 when the VW 38 is presented to the
general public, and ironically christened
"Beetle" by the New York Times because
14
news grupo antolin · june 2005
of the model's very original and attractive shape.
Production started at the Wolfsburg factory in 1945 with an output of 1,800 Beetles and gradually increased until, five years
later, they reached the first million units.
At the same time, a new, more elegant
and sophisticated model was presented,
developed together with Karmann, and
known as the "Karmann Ghia Coupé".
becomes a huge sales success, and is soon
considered the legitimate successor to the
legendary "Beetle" since, following 30
years of existence and with almost twelve
million units manufactured, the Wolfsburg
plant ceases to manufacture it.
Alliances and great
results
VW suffers its first sales crisis in 1967. Output was reduced by 300,000 units and
sales dropped off by the same amount.
However, in 1972 it bounced back, becoming the number one car manufacturer in the world. The "Beetle" thus surpasses the legendary record of the Ford
model T.
In 1978, Volkswagen and Audi unite their
sales structure all over the world under the
V.A.G. trademark. At the end of that same
year they had 211,000 employees. The
decade of the seventies closes with the
production of the “Jetta” at the Wolfsburg
plant.
The new VW
generation
The 1980s see the birth of the second generation of the "Passat", with a more elegant and streamlined body and more spacious interior, which goes into production in Wolfsburg.
We now enter the decade of the seventies
with the presentation in 1973 of the "Passat", which is the starting point for its new
generation models. Production is also
started for a model that is still something
of a legend today: the "Golf", which fast
Furthermore, the start of production of the
second generation of the "Golf" introduces great technological changes in manufacturing processes. For the first time, a
vehicle is designed for highly automated
assembly with the support of robotics.
GOLF
At the annual meeting of shareholders,
approval is given to change the name of
the company from
Volkswagenwerk AG to Volkswagen AG.
In 1982, the cooperation agreement
signed with Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo S.A., (SEAT) enables
Volkswagenwerk AG to prepare the way
for opening up the market in Spain to the
models manufactured by the Group. SEAT
becomes the third independent trademark
of the Volkswagen consortium. VW assumes control of Skoda in 1990, thereby
obtaining excellent access to the auto
market in Central and Eastern Europe.
In 1998, it acquires the makes of RollsRoyce, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini. From 1999 onwards, it begins construction of an original glass factory in
Dresden, to assemble the make's luxury
models, where the project for "Concept
D" will be drawn up, with this prototype
subsequently being christened with the
name of "Phaeton", a sedan at the top
end of the market with an imposing design, setting up new models of technical, aesthetic and functional criteria.
Recent history
During the last decade of the twentieth
century, VAG starts to draw up different
strategies for its various makes of car,
grouping together VW and Skoda, with
a more traditional feel about them, and
SEAT and Audi with another more exclusive, sporty appeal, but none of the makes
produced by the group have lost that robustness and personal character that its rivals try so hard to copy without success.
Is it because it is German?
We cannot speak about the VW consortium without referring to the “Autostadt “
(The Automobile City). This is located in the
city of Wolfsburg, a city that is essentially
”Volkswagen”. The Autostadt provides a
platform for service and communication for
the VW consortium, in total harmony with
its slogan: ”People, automobiles and whatever moves us”. Between the time of its
foundation and 2000, Autostadt had already received seven million visitors.
The last few years have seen the appearance of the “New Beetle Cabriolet", which
offers a unique, avant-garde design, the
"Touran", which is the make's first compact minivan or people-carrier, and also the
"Touareg", a successful four-wheel-drive
vehicle.
Furthermore, only a short time ago production commenced for the fifth generation
of the "Golf", characterised by its markedly sportscar-type features and the imposing design of its body, which is adapted
to the latest demands for family vehicles
and launched as the Golf Plus.
The final product to be launched with a
guarantee of success is the new Pasta,
which aims to attract customers through
its suggestive advertising, full of sensitivity
and appeal to the senses.
Passat 2005
Phaeton
Touareg
In future issues we shall delve deeper into the history of the makes that form part
of the VW consortium.

of Grupo Antolín while setting up the manufacturing
plant, Grupo Antolin-Pune,
in India.
CDTI has decided to set up
a delegation here since this is
the most advanced country,
technologically-speaking, in
the region, with a high potential for development and
has many Spanish companies
with installations on its soil
that have become international firms, including
GRUPO ANTOLIN.
This visit is organised within

of obtaining a better knowledge of the Indian market
for auto parts, promoting the
overseas activities of our sector and at the same time facilitating the search for representatives and dealers by
the Spanish companies involved, and establishing
trade agreements. This act
led to bilateral meetings with
more than 60 Indian companies from the manufacturing
sector for auto parts, for the
purposes of making our business and industrial intentions
known to each other.
The “Asociación Española de
Dirección y Desarrollo de Personas (AEDIPE)” (The Spanish Association of Personnel

the 2005 Prizes for Innovation
in Human Resources for its
Mentoring program.
The current Mentoring program, set within the context of
the Program for Management
and Development of Talent,
has won a prize awarded by
AEDIPE, the most prestigious
professional association in the
field of Human Resources,
with more than 3,600 professional partners from over
2,100 companies, in collaboration with the human resources consultants, Human.
The Group's Human Resource
Department presented the
preparation, philosophy, execution and results of the first Mentoring circuit set up in the company within the Talent Program
to the 6th Edition of the AEDIPEHUMAN Awards for Innovation
in Human Resources.
In our Mentoring Program
there are currently several pairs
of mentors and mentees participating, who are placing emphasis, through mutual advice,
on the development of specific competences captured in
their development plans.
The novelty and specific characteristics of the Mentoring
program are based on the diversity and absolute separation
of duties between mentor and
16

mentee, thereby helping the
program to focus on the development of personal skills beyond the technical or developmental approach to theoretical or formative aspects received by the person so far.
The way to understand MENTORING at Grupo Antolin is
very special: two people that
belong to the organisation
without there being any functional or hierarchical relationship between them and with
different personal and professional competences establish
a series of periodic meetings
over the course of 6 months, in
which the employee with the
role of MENTOR offers their
knowledge, skills, and experience to another employee, the
MENTEE, a person that has
been identified as having
enough potential to continue
to advance further in their Professional Development. This
program responds well to the
cultural restlessness to encourage internal communication
between diverse areas and/or
departments, companies, technical centres, and also the further need to manage the Diversity in which our company is
moving, to extend the
prospects of our people, become better acquainted with
one another and share our different cultures. Concepts such
as creativity, common sense,
the courage to make an idea real and "bring it down to earth",
the transfer of skills from some
individuals to others, the conviction that there is already
enough talent inside the company to liberate and share with
our colleagues, without always
seeking for external advice...This
has all contributed to making it
possible for the program of
which we are the driving force,
to be awarded the much-deserved CONSOLATION PRIZE
for Innovation in Human Resources, as mentioned in the

the area she is in charge of
and introduced the work plan
for the rest of the conference.
The remainder of the day was
spent with the plant Managers analysing, in various
workshops, the state of the
management systems in each
of Grupo Antolin's companies
and territories.
The specific outcome of the
day's work was the defining
of personalised plans for improvement for each of our
companies with a view to
favouring improvement and
strengthening their weak
points over the next few years.
Our Chief Executive, Mr José
Manuel Temiño, closed the
conference by encouraging
those present to continue to
work to improve our procedures and increase our economic efficiency. Worthy of
mention is the magnificent
work carried out by all the
Managers at the meeting and
their interest in becoming personally enriched by the views
of the other people attending
the conference.

On the road
towards
Six Sigma
Continued from pages 12 and 13
On 6th April at Grupo Antolin's head office a ceremony
was held that was of great significance to the Group's Deployment of Six Sigma: the
Graduation Ceremony of the
Third Business Green Belts
Wave of Black Belts and
Green Belts and the presentation of Certificates to the First
Wave of Black Belts.
As we have often reported,
the Third Wave of Business
Green Belts, Black Belts and
Green Belts underwent training between September 2004
and January 2005, and are
now in the middle of developing their Six Sigma projects.
The First Wave of Black Belts,
on the other hand, were
trained between September
2002 and January 2003, so
that as far as the Deployment
of Six Sigma projects is concerned, they have already accumulated over two years experience. It is worth drawing attention to the huge
effort invested by the First
Wave of Black Belts, who
were pioneers in the development of projects using Six
Sigma methodology, and
have now moved on to carry out other activities within
the Group.
We would like to take the opportunity to offer our congratulations to all the awarded and to thank all those that
attended the Ceremony,
which was presented by Mª
Hélène Antolin (Manager of
the DEOM) and enjoyed the
collaboration of José Manuel
Temiño (Chief Executive Officer) and Fernando Dal-Re
(Chief Human Resources Officer), who helped to give the
graduates and certificates.
2nd Congress on
Excellence and Quality
in Castilla y León
On 7th and 8th April 2005, the
2nd Congress on Excellence and
Quality in Castilla y León was
held in the city of Ávila with
the slogan:"Modernisation and
Competitiveness: our commitment to society". This second
edition of the conference was
chaired by Grupo Antolin.
The Congress started with the
words of Mª Hélène Antolin
outlining the importance of
these meetings to spread the
culture of Excellence as a basic factor for success. Grupo
Antolin also participated with
the paper entitled "Deploying
Six Sigma at Grupo Antolin",
in which Susana Quintano explained to those present the
process followed in setting up
and monitoring the Six Sigma methodology in the
Group.

HEALTH
¡Careful
whit the
SUN!
Moderate exposure to the sun can be pleasant, but too much can be
dangerous, since the ultraviolet rays can lead to painful sunburn. They
can also cause more serious side effects, including skin cancer, premature
ageing of the skin and other skin ailments; as well as causing cataracts and
other problems with your sight, and inhibition of the immune system.
Children are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of the sun, since most
people that are over-exposed to the sun are still under 18 years of age.
Sunburn appears as a result of being overexposed to the harmful ultraviolet rays
of the sun. Although the symptoms are
usually only temporary (such as redness of
the skin, which is painful to the touch),
damage to the skin is often permanent,
with serious long-term effects on health,
including skin cancer.
It should be remembered that there is
no such thing as the so-called “healthy
tan”. Exposure to the sun without protection causes premature ageing of the skin.
Exposure to the sun can lead to first and
second degree burns.
Skin cancer normally appears in adulthood, but is caused by exposure to the sun
and sunburn that originated in childhood.

The inner contents of
Aloe Vera provide a
natural balm for our skin
First aid
· Provide baths, or cold showers, or apply
cold, wet compresses to the burn for 10
to 15 minutes, several times a day. To alleviate the pain, bicarbonate of soda can
be added to the water. (Young children
can suffer from cold very quickly, so the
water should be kept warm).
· Apply a lotion to soothe the skin.
Factors that make
sunburn more likely
· Aloe vera gel is a common household remedy for sunburn. Aloe contains active
compounds that help to relieve pain and
inflammation of the skin.
Young infants and children are particularly sensitive to the effects of the sun. People with white skin are more likely to suffer from sunburn, but even dark or black
skin can burn and needs to be protected. The sun's rays are stronger during
the hours between 10.00 am and 4.00
pm, and also at higher altitudes and latitudes closer to the Tropics. The burn may
be exacerbated by the reflection of the
sun's rays on the water, sand or snow. Sun
lamps can also cause serious burns. Certain medicines (such as the antibiotic doxicicline) can make the person more susceptible to the sun's rays.
· Medication such as acetaminophen or
ibuprofen may be given for the pain without a doctor's prescription.
Aspirin should NOT be given to children.
Don'ts
DO NOT apply vaseline, benzocaine or lidocaine, or butter to sunburn, since these
make the symptoms worse and can prevent healing.
DO NOT wash the burnt skin with strong
soap.
Symptoms
The first symptoms of sunburn may not
appear for several hours and the overall effect may not be obvious for another 24 hours or even later. Amongst the
possible symptoms are the following:
· Sensitive, red skin, warm to the touch.
· Blisters that develop within a few hours,
or a few days later.
· Severe reactions (sometimes known as
“sun poisoning”), including fever, shivering, nausea or rashes.
· Several days after suffering from sunburn, the burnt skin may start to peel.
Should the doctor
be called?
A doctor should be called at once if there
are signs of shock, heat exhaustion, dehydration or any other serious reaction.
Such signs include:
· Feeling faint or dizzy
· Fast pulse rate or rapid breathing (panting)
· Extreme thirst, failure to urinate or
sunken eyes
· Pale, cold or wet skin
· Painful eyes and sensitivity to light
· Nausea, fever, shivering or rash
· Large, sore blisters
Prevention
We recommend avoiding exposure to the
sun during the hours when the sun's rays
are strongest. Protective sun cream should
be applied generously with an SPF (sun
protection factor) of at least 30, particularly on the face, nose, ears and shoulders.
It is advisable to apply sun protection 30
minutes before exposure to the sun so that
it can penetrate the skin properly and then
apply it again after swimming and every 2
hours for as long as you are outside in
the open air.
It is recommended that a hat be worn. SPF
clothes and swimsuits are also available.
Sunglasses should be used with UV protection. And also lip salve, with a sunscreen for the lips.

ON THE WAY
Prague
Magic
Prague is one of those
important European
cities that, as
traditional
metropolises, are
attributed a magic
significance.
A large part of this
significance is due to
the location of the
Prague basin, a
crossroads and trade
route since time
immemorial.
In the second half of the 9th century was
founded the castle of Prague, under whose
protection the various settlements developed independently from their environment, to become, over the course of time,
the four towns of the city of Prague: the Old
Town, already known before 1280 as “the
head of the realm)” (caput regni) and the
capital of the Czech kingdom; the Lesser
Town; the New Town and the City of the
Castle (Hradcany). The capital of the Czech
Republic is the most valuable urban site of
historical monuments in the whole country.
In 1992, the 866 hectares that make up the
historic centre of the city became part of the
Prague
UNESCO List of protection of Cultural and
National World Heritage sites.
On the city's coat of arms can be read: "Praga caput regni", and quite rightly so, for ever
since it was founded, Prague has always
played a very important role in the history of
the nation, the country and of Europe.
Since the Middle Ages, Prague has been
famous for being one of the most beautiful cities in the world and has been described
as the “golden city", the “city of the hundred towers", the “crown of the world"
or the “dream of stone". Important figu-
Geography of Prague
The city is located on both banks of the
River Vltava, in the region of Bohemia. It
has a surface area of 496 sq.km. The
distance as the crow flies from Prague to
the three seas is roughly the same: 365
km to the Baltic Sea, 495 km to the
North Sea and 490 km to the Adriatic.
Population There are currently around
1,250,000 inhabitants.
Climate A very marked, pleasant
Continental climate, hot in summer and icy
cold in winter. October and November are
usually very wet and the height of winter
there can be incredibly heavy snowfalls (in
winter the temperature always hovers
around freezing and the snow can stay for
many weeks at a time).

Cesky Krumlov
res have paid homage to Prague over the centuries. The likes of W. A. Mozart, L. van
Beethoven, G. Apollinaire, P.I.Tchaikovsky, F.M.
Dostoyevsky, A. Rodin, O. Kokoschka, and
more recently, Queen Elizabeth II. Prague represents a single site of historical monuments
dominated by the Castle, whose towers rise
above the city.
The square, founded in the 12th century, has
witnessed countless historical events. Located next to the Town Hall in the Old Town and
the Temple of Our Lady of Tyn, the square has
several other buildings that also stand out such
as the Baroque church of Saint Nicholas; the
Rococo palace of the Kinski family, home of
the pictorial collection of the National Gallery;
the House of the Stone Bell, whose rooms are
currently used as a municipal centre for exhibitions and concerts; or the monument to
the religious reformer, Juan Hus.
On 21st June 1621, the square witnessed the
execution of 27 Czech aristocrats, in whose
memory 27 crosses were engraved on the
pavement.
Not very far from this spot can be seen the
meridian that passes through Prague.
The Town Hall was founded in 1338. In 1364,
the tower was added to the chapel and in
1470 the building was reconstructed in the
Gothic style. The east wing of the Town Hall
was destroyed on 8th May 1945 and has yet
to be re-built. Another of Prague's great attractions is its wide range of cultural offerings:
theatres, a large number of concerts at any
time of the year, the well-known, unique
“Black Light Theatre”, the marquees set up in
the Main Square for all kinds of fairs…i.e.
for anything so as not to get bored.
If you want to go shopping, there's no better place than the centre of the city, where you
will find original gifts like puppets, the famous
Bohemian glass, and shops devoted to the
sale of amber.
Not very far from the capital are a large number of castles that are highly recommended
for a visit.
The Mediaeval castle of Karlstein, built between 1348 and 1355 during the reign of
Charles IV to guard over the crown jewels and
other objects and state documents.
The Palace of Konopiste, Gothic in style dating back to the 14th century, re-built in the 19th
century, and home to extraordinary collections
of weapons, furniture, paintings and ancient
tapestries.
The castle of Krivoklat. The first news of
this royal castle dates back to the year 1100.
The castle of Cesky Sternberk, located on
the River Sazava with its rich stucco decoration and an extraordinary exhibition of
weapons.
Three cities nearby are also worthy of our
attention on our trip around the area surrounding Prague: Kutna Hora, Cesky Krumlov
and Karlovy Vary.
In the Middle Ages, thanks to its rich silver
mines, Kutna Hora became the second most
important city in the kingdom of Bohemia after Prague. It is here that we find some extraordinary Gothic monuments, particularly the
temple of Saint Barbara, one of the most
beautiful Gothic Czech buildings, the Royal
Mint, where the famous coins known as
"gros" were minted, the House of Stone, the
church of St Jacob. The city of Kutna Hora is
one of the monuments listed as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site.
Prague Castle
The castle began construction
on its present site in the 9th
century. It is currently the seat
of the Presidency of the Czech
Republic and is considered to
be the historical and political
centre of both city and state.
The Mediaeval city of Cesky Krumlov, in the
beautiful countryside of Southern Bohemia,
known as "the pearl of Bohemia”, retains
its Mediaeval appearance. The city's old town
was registered in 1992 in the list of monuments as a World Heritage Site under the auspices of UNESCO. The city has two extraordinary monuments: the castle and the Gothic church of St Vitus.
Karlovy Vary is a well-know spa town in western Bohemia that became famous in the Middle Ages thanks to the discovery of the hot thermal springs, used for therapeutic purposes.
These are just some of the wonders that
await us if we visit the soul of the Czech Republic. Only once our trip is over can we
complete the list.
Charles Bridge
This is the oldest bridge in
Prague. Its statues and architecture mostly date back to
the 18th century. The bridge
is 515 metres in length and
10 metres in width.
The astronomical
Clock at the Town Hall
This dates back to the beginning of the 15th century and
when the clock chimes out
the hours, the procession of
twelve apostles appears in a
window located at the top.
At the bottom, there are 12
medallions with the signs of
the zodiac.
