We’re Going on Vacation
Any time is a good time to enjoy a trip to visit relatives, to see an
historical place, or to explore a different country. No matter where you
go, your little preschooler who is deaf or hard of hearing will want to
be included in all the fun.
What can you do to prepare her for the
vacation?
Make a little book with pictures of your transportation (airplane,
train or car), what you will see when you arrive, the place you will
stay and any other pictures or photographs which will help your child
understand the trip.
What should you bring for the trip?
A comfort toy, blanket or a favorite pillow will help your child feel more
relaxed, especially in a chilly airplane. Depending on your child’s age,
you won’t want to forget a bottle and perhaps a pacifier. As exciting as a
trip on the train, airplane or in the car might be, it is usually too long
to sustain the interest of a preschooler. Prepare for this by wrapping up
two or three little presents to be opened during travel time. Books are
perfect for any age. A pad of paper and new crayons are good ideas, too.
What should your child bring?
Children love having their own backpack with their special toys. Your
little one can choose some favorite books, puzzles or toys to take along
with them.
What can you do to make travel time pass
quickly?
If your travel is in an airplane, you can talk about what you see out
of the window. Flight attendants will ask what drink you want, so you
can prepare by talking about juice and encourage your child to make
the request by herself. If your travel is by car, you can sing together or
take turns singing. You can make a game of watching for animals,
cars of a certain color, rivers, etc. Engage your child in the adventure
as you talk, talk, talk!
Don’t forget to bring your camera!
The pictures you take will make excellent Experience Books for
the whole family to enjoy upon your return.
Traveling with young children can be stressful, but with some advance
planning, the experience can be fun for everyone. Bon voyage!

¡Nos vamos de vacaciones!
Cualquier momento es un buen momento para disfrutar de un viaje y
visitar familiares, explorar un lugar histórico, o conocer un país nuevo.
No importa dónde usted vaya, su pequeño preescolar, quien es sordo o
hipoacúsico querrá ser incluido en toda la diversión.
¿Qué puede hacer para prepararlo para las
vacaciones?
Haga un pequeño libro con fotos de cómo van a viajar (avión, tren o
carro), de lo que verán cuando lleguen al lugar, dónde se quedarán
y otras ilustraciones o fotos que le ayudarán a su pequeño a entender
el paseo.
¿Qué deben traer en su viaje?
Algo que haga que su hijo se sienta bien, un juguete, su colcha o
almohada favorita, hará que su hijo se sienta relajado, especialmente
en la fría temperatura del avión. Dependiendo de la edad de su hijo,
no querrán olvidar su biberón o tal vez su chupón. Un paseo en avión,
tren o carro puede ser emocionante, pero usualmente toma mucho más
tiempo de lo que un preescolar puede estar interesado. Prepárense para
esto, envolviendo dos o tres regalitos que su hijo pueda abrir durante
el viaje. Los libros son un regalo perfecto para cualquier edad. Un
cuaderno y nuevas crayolas también son muy buena idea.
¿Qué debe traer su hijo?
A los niños les encanta tener su propia mochila con sus juguetes
especiales. Le pueden permitir a su pequeño que escoja ciertos libros,
juguetes o rompecabezas favoritos para llevar en el paseo.
¿Qué puede hacer usted para que el
tiempo pase rápidamente?
Si van a viajar en avión, puede hablar de lo que ven por la ventana.
La aeromoza le preguntará que quiere tomar, así que prepare al niño
hablando del jugo y motivándole para que él pida lo que quiere. Si
viajan por carro, pueden cantar juntos o tomar turnos para cantar.
Pueden jugar buscando animales, carros de cierto color, ríos, etc.
¡Envuelvan a su hijo en esta aventura, mientras que hablan, hablan,
hablan!
¡No olviden llevar su cámara!
Las fotografías que tomen se convertirán en un excelente Libro de
Experiencia que toda la familia disfrutará una vez que hayan
regresado.
Viajar con niños pequeños puede ser estresado, pero si planean con
anticipación, la experiencia puede ser divertida para todos. ¡Buen viaje!
