REPORT FOR THE CIMPA FROM THE LOCAL ORGANIZERS CIMPA SCHOOL “MATHEMATICAL MODELS FOR SECURITY APPLICATIONS” HAVANA, August 29TH to September 9TH, 2016 The lecture activities of this CIMPA School started in August 29TH at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science in Havana University. The Organizing and Scientific Committee were headed by Prof. Josep Miret and Prof. Luis Ramiro Piñeiro. They not only spent long time in the conception and organization of the School, they also contributed recruiting complementary funds to those previously offered by CIMPA. The members of the Scientific Committee were: Luis Ramiro Piñeiro Díaz, Universidad de La Habana, Cuba (chair) Josep M. Miret Biosca, Universitat de Lleida, Spain (chair) Josep Domingo Ferrer, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain Edy Tri Baskoro, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia Mirka Miller, Univ. Newcastle, Australia & Univ. West Bohemia, Czech Rep. The Organizing committee was composed by Lucina García Hernández, Universidad de La Habana, Cuba Jorge Estrada Sarlabous, Instituto de Cibernética, Matemática y Física, Cuba Pablo Freyre Arozarena, Universidad de La Habana, Cuba Carlos M. Legón Pérez, Universidad de La Habana, Cuba together with Valentina Badía Albanés, Universidad de La Habana, Cuba Hebert Pérez-Rosés, Universitat de Lleida, Spain who devoted a great effort to the development of the School. During the School, were given conditions providing a wide interchange between participants, speakers and lecturers. Six courses were given respectively by: Security of Statistical Databases, Joe Ryan & Julián Salas (University of Newcastle, Australia & Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain) Algebraic Geometry Codes, Gröbner bases and linear codes, Mijaíl Borges Quintana & Edgar Martínez Moro (University of Oriente, Cuba & University of Valladolid, Spain) Cryptographic protocols using elliptic curves, Josep M. Miret (University of Lleida, Spain ) Topological Vulnerabilities of Networks, Hebert Pérez-Rosés (University of Lleida, Spain) 1 Efficient implementation of pairing-based and elliptic-curve based protocols and their applications to modern security, Francisco Rodríguez-Henríquez (CINVESTAV, Mexico) Convolutional Codes, their Mathematical Properties and Applications to Multimedia Streaming, Joan-Josep Climent (Universitat d'Alacant, Spain) Six talks were given, all of them from people of different Cuban institutions. The high scientific level of the courses and presentations was celebrated by most of participants. The assistance to lectures and talks was excellent. Mostly of the lecturers and speakers gave notes or presentations, which were deposited in a PC, accessible to all participants. Young participants presented talks (15) concerning their research. This was a very good thing, because reinforce the implication of students and turn them to be acting in the school. The motivation was high. The professors have attended also the courses by their colleagues. It has been very interesting the introduction of future research lines on the side of the professors. The total amount of participants has been 25; among them, 6 were women. Eleven participants were from neighbor countries (Mexico (3), Argentina (2), Colombia (2), Brazil (1) and Venezuela(2)). They were supported (totally or partially) by the CIMPA funds. One participant came from Spain. All the participants and speakers had lunch together every day at “La Roca” Restaurant. Fourteen Cuban participants were supported (lunch) from CIMPA, in order that all participants and speakers were together at lunch. The coffee breaks in the morning and in the afternoon were of 20 minutes and the lectures and/or talks finished at 5:00 pm. All foreign participants and lecturers were accommodated in Vedado Hotel. This unity of place was very favorable to the course of the School, contacts and exchanges took great advantage of this. Young mathematicians from Cuba and neighboring countries built relationships in Mathematics and in friendship. The host institution for the School provided an excellent environment and ensured that all required infrastructure was in place. The lecture room was just large enough to accommodate all the participants. The classroom had a good equipment (PC and canyon) and correct conditions (illumination and climate were good). Most of the courses were given in Spanish. This School has been very useful in order to stimulate research in the region. The program was well-planned and permitted all participants to attend all the courses, talks and interact between them. The relationships among researchers became stronger after the school; other scientific connections have also been established. The contact made at this event will be highly beneficial to the career development of the participants. Several social activities were coordinated by the Organizing Committee as follows: first Friday some participants went to Project “Delta”, which is a cultural Project joining science and humor; second Tuesday a cultural presentation in “Fresa and Chocolate Center” for all speakers and participants, and each Thursday a dinner for speakers. In 2 addition, were organized the “compulsory” Welcome and Farewell Cocktails. These activities provided ample opportunity for interaction among participants. FINANCIAL SUPPORT Major financial support was provided by CIMPA. However, from the arrangements of Josep Miret was obtained and additional support from University of Lleida. On the 3 other hand, Luis Ramiro Piñeiro and Valentina Badía achieved some financial support from the Cuban Society of Mathematics and Computer Science used in the accommodation of Cuban participants from other provinces, cultural activities and printing of documents. - CIMPA: 12000 € INSPIRES, Universitat de Lleida: 1500 € Doctorate School, Universitat de Lleida: 750 € Cuban Society of Mathematics and Computer Science: 8000 CUP =320 € So, the total amount of the support reached 14570 €. We have to add that most lecturers were supported by their universities to cost the travel expenses. An optimized distribution of the different supports allowed the appropriate use of each fund in accordance with the restrictions of use that each institution has imposed.
