The Impressions +386 show does not bring forth a definitive national selection of Slovenian printmaking. It is a carefully considered selection of artworks, undersigned by the curator, who has shared one of the closest connections with the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts and the International Centre of Graphic Arts for over two decades. With her exceptional knowledge of traditional printmaking and contemporary graphic arts processes, Breda Škrjanec was one of the key strategists in the transformation of the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts and the redefinition of the graphic arts medium that was noted and well received also in international scope. The turn away from the technical definition of printmaking as an autonomous artistic medium towards a more open sociological understanding of the graphic arts and the art of printing in general represents a significant moment for the Ljubljana Biennial. The transition was not easy by any means since the sharpest critical debates were usually ignited precisely around the phenomenological status of the graphic arts and the question of their autonomy as well as the subsequent expansion of the definition of the medium in keeping with the modern mediums of communication. It was only with the precisely defined and theoretically substantiated definition of the field, that it was possible to locate the wide variety of hybrid artistic expressions in the context of printmaking, without having to reject those artists who are not accounted as printmakers due to technical definitions, and focus primarily on the strength of the message and the overall quality rather than the technical superiority of the métier. De ahí que en esta exposición sea fácil establecer un diálogo con cualquier espectador curioso. ennial as well as the International Centre of Graphic Arts since they are in no way isolated by the contemporary understanding of printmaking, rather they are included as a matter of course. The exhibition conceived for the Calcografío Nacional by Breda Škrjanec is based on the aforementioned conceptual framework of the expanded understanding of the graphic arts medium, which provides for a very diverse overview of the art production of a generation. The artworks in the show share a freshness and an ease in their choice of medium and current involvement in the universal, individual and social circumstances and dilemmas, widely ranging from identity and intimacy to ecology and social inequality as well as the dictatorship of the media, which is why it easily interacts with any curious viewer. Sin embargo, las técnicas tradicionales usadas tanto en la obra de Vesna Drnovšek como en la de Svetlana Jakimovska Rodič no excluyen la modernidad del lenguaje y en ambas obras la figura humana se convierte en siluetas-pictogramas para hacerse The exhibition Impressions +386 that is coming to the spaces of the Calcografía Nacional in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando) is curated by Breda Škrjanec, and is bringing a selection of young Slovene artists, which presents the vanguard restlessness to expand the borders of the current communication in graphic arts. The exhibition coincides with the celebration of the 30th edition of the Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana – a prestigious event and a big call in the world of the contemporary graphic art. Few artists from the selection are representatives of the tendencies that are to be found in the first line of reflection in the panorama of the world of graphics. The reason for this is to be found in the early attention the printmaking has had in Slovenia. In the mid of the 20th century the Academy of Fine Arts of Ljubljana as a pioneer in Europe incorporated the studies of graphic arts, and by doing so this artistic expression has become an important part of the modern Slovene art. Seven artists and two creative groups establish the expository speech, while topics and strategies are various. Such are also the means of reflection, which is digital in the photography of Tomaž Tomažin, just like in the work of Tanja Lazetič – an artist who has adopted the pixelated image, an obviously contemporary graphic gesture. However, traditional techniques used on the works of both, Vesna Drnovšek and of Svetlana Jakimovska Rodič, do not exclude the modernity of the artistic language and on both works the human figure turns into silhouettes-pictograms in order to become a sign of universal value. Moreover, graphical installations of Petra Varl turn prints into something spatial, and the same signo de validez universal. In addition, thematic surprises are not missing. One of them is the exploration of the alimentation culture, which is the center of attention of both, the duo of gourmets created by a group of artists called Pri Zlatem stegnu/The Golden Thigh (composed of Katja Skušek and Nataša Skušek), and in chocolate bars of Marija Mojca Pungerčar. Another group-work exhibited on the show is Stripburger, a unique comic book, which was also present on the important International Festival Angouleme in 2001 where it was proclaimed as the best fanzine. To sum up, for the Calcografía Nacional – one of the three historical institutions of the printmaking in Europe supporting experimentation and vanguard and holding the reputation for sheltering the legacy of Francisco de Goya – it is a great satisfaction to welcome this exhibition. El evento necesita- Slovenia has a strong tradition in the graphic arts. An essential part of this tradition is certainly the fact that the Academy of Fine Arts was one of the first schools in Europe after the Second World War to introduce the study of printmaking. The foundation stone of this tradition is the Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana. This is actually the oldest manifestation of this type in the world today, underpinned by the fact that the event has seen its thirtieth recurrence this year. The Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts emerged in 1955 and placed Ljubljana and the art of Slovenia on the world map. Tradition does not merely speak of the Biennial’s consistency and position within the Slovenian and the global art system, but makes it into one of the fundamental art institutions within the Slovenian art arena in its position as a builder and a representative of the cultural system. In the previous, socialist regime, during which the event formed and functioned for almost forty years, the Biennial events established the conditions that supported the life of the middle-class culture. This was particularly momentous in the early years of the event, when the state ideology of the time was not in favour of the middle-classes and the Biennial essentially stood against the dominant cultural policy. Gradually, the Biennial became a central cultural event of the highest ranking. After 1991, when Slovenia became an independent state and Ljubljana a capital, the social role of the Biennial did not diminish, on the contrary, it became more demanding. The event was in dire need of revitalisation. It had to embrace the new circumstances that had changed the social characteristics of urban culture and the needs of the new middle-classes, and thus ba renovarse urgentemente. This took place in 2001, when the form of the Biennial of Graphic Arts utterly changed in terms of strategy, organization and content, aligning itself with the needs of the time. The revitalisation of the Biennial is a process that has since not ceased to check and recheck the structure of the event, its relations to the local and international public as well as its internal organization and curatorial work. Alongside the Biennial, one of the strongest groups of Slovenian modern art formed, which is known in the course of the theory of art as the Ljubljana school of the graphic arts. It was the first time in the history of Slovenian art that the international arena recognized the quality of the autochthonous features of the Ljubljana school of the graphic arts and the artists associated with it. Together with other institutions, the Biennial contributed to this distinctive quality and specificity becoming established, which could compete with the art produced in global measure. Today, the artists of the Ljubljana school of the graphic arts are the leading figures of post-war modernist art in Slovenia. It is because of the Biennial that the art of Slovenia is known beyond its borders. Furthermore, it is the fine art graphic prints that most widely represent Slovenian art with their inclusion in the various art collections of the world. The closeness that Slovenian printmaking shares with the Biennial also determined its development. Even today, although almost half a century has passed since the “golden years” and modernism has long been out of fashion, the Ljubljana school of the graphic arts is still quoted as the pinnacle of Slove- 11 12 La conexión del Arte Gráfico Esloveno con la Bienal ha determinado también su desarrollo. La introducción de la impresión en serigrafía abrió también el medio a los artistas que creaban nian art in the field of printmaking, while some of its representatives are still producing high-quality prints today. The group never drafted a manifesto or registered itself formally in any way. The main criterion for entry into the group was the artist’s participation in the Biennial. The observable characteristics of the group were: endeavouring to produce a technically perfect graphic print carried out in the techniques of colour etching and aquatint – in its creation, the artist is present from the idea, through the technological processes, to the print; accuracy and definition of the prints, without spontaneity, gesture or decorative intention: a patinated surface, mostly in the light tonal scale; the majority of the artists belonging to the group consistently persisted on the margins of the cognitive world and aspired towards the independence of printmaking as a medium in its own right. It became established in the period between 1955 and 1970, it defined the norms for Slovenian printmaking, and was Slovenia’s export product up till the first half of the 1980s. The aesthetics of the Ljubljana school of the graphic arts came to an end in the 1970s with the introduction of silk-screen printing. Nevertheless, the myth of the Ljubljana school of the graphic arts persisted and continued to influence the developments on the Slovenian graphic arts scene. This fact is actually not surprising as the professors of the Academy of Fine Arts were also recruited from precisely this group, which also reflects its political power. The introduction of silk-screen printing also opened up the medium to the artists that produced work in the spirit of the new age. Silk-screen printing became the technique of the next generation of artists, which established itself at the start of the 1970s. These artists were interested in the rational geometric scheme and pure, saturated colours, on the one hand, and the object and the figure, in the so-called new expressive figuration with a taste of pop art, on the other. The beginning of the 1980s was marked in Slo- siguiendo el espíritu de los nuevos tiempos. La segunda mitad de la década de los noventa fue una oportunidad para que de nuevo se realizara venian art by the great interest of artists for painting (the new image), movements in alternative culture, and the disintegration of established modes of artistic expression. There were no new printmaking initiatives. The spirit of the postmodern period, which was typical in its subject matter related to archaism, history, expressiveness, nationality etc., was soon expressed also in printmaking. Lithography and woodcut became popular techniques. In the late eighties and at the turn of the nineties it became clear that printmaking had again become appealing particularly to young artists. At the time, one of the last successful generations of specialist printmakers stepped onto the scene and made a mark in the graphic arts in the first half of the 1990s. Printmakers were returning to the basics of printmaking practice, with their own sensibility opting to embark on an independent quest. Their works in one way or another pointed to the polemic attitude towards the tradition of Slovenian printmaking, even though they were not overly concerned with it. They asserted they own personal address, understanding printmaking as an autonomous genre with its own laws and expressive effects, which are different from those of drawing or painting. The artists of this generation worked in small editions and did not use colour. They were interested in the medium itself. The second half of the nineties was an opportunity for a repeated self-analysis of printmaking. To the surface came its social, cultural and artistic function, which is not related to the features of the technical processes, but rather the possibility of reproducing images and messages. Printing techniques were revised and thus the understanding of the graphic medium expanded. Works that had previously been excluded from printmaking began to be taken into account – photocopies, digital prints, collective work. This also opened up a new chapter for all forms of artists’ printed works that are not graphic prints, such as artists’ books, art posters, and other types of original ephemera. The new understanding of printmaking as a reproducible art and the spirit of the time which informs the artist that the manner of expression is not significant, rather, what is of significance is the subject that in itself defines the technical execution of the artwork and in turn allows for a free passage between mediums and techniques, has after 2000 resulted in a host of artworks on the pluralistic polygon of contemporary art that do not belong among graphic works conceptually, while in their technical implementation this is precisely what they are, or the opposite. All this has prompted a lively exploration of the art of printing. The technological development and the free passage of the media as a logical principle of making art in contemporary society has not taken away any creative potential from the printmaking medium, on the contrary, it has expanded its boundaries. The selection of works for the Impressions +386 exhibition has also been made in this spirit. It presents the work of artists, mostly of the middle generation, who strongly defend their artistic positions. Their investigations in the printmaking medium are in terms of content and concept equally relevant as other projects from the world of contemporary art. The power of tradition is sometimes still visible in the exploration of formal visual elements, yet not to the detriment of the subject matter. This is mostly made up of commentaries on personal experience, translated into universal images by means of visual language. The principles of the creative process are therefore similar, the contents, however, differ substantially given the fact that they embody the original voice of each individual artist. This selection brings to light another interesting Slovenian reality, which is that particularly women artists have been coming onto the printmaking scene since the 1990s, and five of these are included in the Impressions +386 exhibition. Artists Vesna Drnovšek and Svetlana Jakimovska Rodić are fascinated by traditional printmaking. Their work is informed by the awareness that the medium of their choice has specific formal characteristics and del mundo del arte contemporáneo. Vesna Drnovšek loves the materiality of the matrix, which is why she tends to combine the techniques and processes that intaglio printing makes possible. She is interested in the nature of the printmaking procedure, which she uses in a very painterly manner, without much concern for editions. Her use of collage, assemblage and the choice of colour all pertain more to the character of painting than printmaking. Printmaking provides her with an opportunity to experiment with the printing plate, reaching the end of its physical capabilities. It is not a question of the right or wrong solution, since a mistake can serve as a starting point in the process of enquiry and a variation of the solution to the creative problem. This is what she says about her subject matter and method: “My prints are not about actual things. I inscribe images on the printing plate that give a general sense of life. I am constantly reusing the matrices that have already been treated. I exploit the possibilities of illuminating one story in different ways. The matrix is upgraded each time and follows the development of my prints.”1 The History of Curtains by Svetlana Jakimovska Rodić is a sort of work in progress with many possible presentations. Rodić started working with the subject of early Slovenian history in 2010, when her Hallstatt print portfolio was produced in the colour etching and aquatint technique. Already these works show how the artist set up a confrontation between the scenes from the Iron Age situlae taken from the Slovenian archaeological collections and contemporaneity, finding that after more than 3500 years, the history of human joys and worries has not significantly changed in terms of content. What has changed are merely the means and methods. She expanded this idea of the confrontation of history to a series of works on rolls, which continues the confrontation of the past and the present. The messages in her works are unambiguous: The human race has not yet managed to eliminate war and violence, we still have rituals and customs, we fear death and rejoice in life. Her work 15 16 historia de diferentes maneras. La instalación de Sedlaček, Grelniki Globus & Svet zemljevi- can be understood as a critique of society and at the same time as a hymn to life. Marija Mojca Pungerčar and Sašo Sedlaček take a socially critical and conceptual stance in their work. Marija Mojca Pungerčar uses her Mortality Table multiple, which consists of chocolate imprinted with data on the life expectancy of men and women, to draw attention to the use of such statistics in planning the life of a contemporary consumer (most directly in signing up for any sort of insurance). Using the form of chocolate as the consumer’s object of desire reinforces the artist’s critical attitude to the contemporary methods of manipulating people. Sedlaček’s installation Globe Heaters & The World of Maps According to Buckminster Fuller was produced at the end of 2010 for an exhibition at the International Centre of Graphic Arts. In his own, friendly, socially engaged way, Sedlaček used it to draw attention to the issue of pollution and global warming. The globe, which contains heaters blowing hot air through holes, is punctured in the places where the planet suffers the highest rates of pollution and warming “... The Globe Heater is an illustration of the world afraid of the overheating of the planet and the collapse of the ecological balance. It is an illustration of the egoism and privilege of the rich countries. Every standard globe in use today is unfair according to Buckminster Fuller because it gives privilege to the richer countries whose territory is less distorted than that of the other parts of the world,” wrote the author of the project, which is why he added a copy of the Dymaxion Map to the Globe Heaters project, a map produced by Buckminster Fuller in 1946. The map can be assembled into a form that does not have a proper top or bottom, it can be composed in different ways, and distorts the territories of the world in a fairer way according to Bukminster. The common denominator in the work of artists Tanja Lažetić and Petra Varl is their focus on subject matter. Their visual language and the way of working are totally different, however. Tanja Lažetić has in recent years focused her attention mainly on artists’ books. She uses citation and appropriation in her work. The subject of the woman artist and her role in society often penetrates into the heart of her work. Almost like Olympia is the title of her large-scale, “sewn” digital image, the process of which took her from the photograph produced in 2001 to the ink jet print in 2011, whereas formally the piece experiments with the effects of combining different mediums. The title itself alludes to Manet’s Olympia, the image that shocked and upset the Parisian public in 1865, not so much because of the nudity, but because of the provocative gaze and the details indicating the depicted woman’s profession of a prostitute. The fact that Manet’s model was an ambitious young artist and not a prostitute, as she was labelled, is a creative identificatory moment for Lažetić. In the background of Petra Varl’s drawings, there is always an intimate story that is being placed into a public context by the artist. Her themes are not heavy, they are light-hearted and playful, they talk about the everyday moments that make up the tapestries of people’s lives. Although personal, hers is a universal language, since anyone can recognise themselves in her images. The simplified images give an air of frivolity, yet behind them lies much serious work and well-crafted strategy. Varl is a perfectionist; she leaves nothing to chance. Her Book of Serigraphs, which was produced in the Printmaking Studio of the International Centre of Graphic Arts in 2010, is a compilation and adaptation of two of the artist’s exhibitions of drawings and “road” signs that took place in 2009 in Maribor. The book is filled with figures that are the main protagonists of the artist’s narrative, whereas the drawings, produced in the book as silk-screens with few colour highlights, are her main mode of visual expression. He intensifies the stories that he tells by means of repetition, in which he is always present himself as the object of the story. His art practice is based on self-presentation and, as he writes himself, on “the desire to identify with the viewer”. Such a creative approach in itself requires the combining of various possibilities offered by modern technology, especially photomontage, photography and staged installations, video and painting. His light boxes are panoramas that attempt to build stories through structures, which often contain some sort of interruption or unexpected surprise. “The authors of the project Pri Zlatem stegnu (The Golden Thigh), Nataša Skušek, Katja Skušek and Mladen Stropnik, stem from the avant-garde notion that art should be a way of life ...” was written by curator Mojca Grmek. The project has been developing since 2004 and has gone through various stages to date. Initially the artists carried out their performances following a strictly collective model, today, however, their pieces are more individual. The Golden Thigh project addresses the human obsession with food through various viewpoints such as preparing, serving and eating food. The artists explore the different aspects that human society associates with food and eating. The products that arise out of their investigations are performances, video, documentation and various by-products that are formed during the various stages of the project’s lifespan. Stripburger is a Slovenian fanzine, which covers the novelties in the field of comic strip production, in terms of both theory and practice. This means that it offers Slovenian and foreign comic strip artists the possibility to present their work. Stripburger in Motion is an animated film that was made in 2010 by director Boris Dolenc. Based on eight comics published by Stripburger: Love Train (Sascha Hommer, Germany), Messiah (Vladan Nikolić, Serbia), Judas the Catholic Squirrel (Alberto Vazquez, Spain), Fog (Damijan Sovec, Slovenia), 8th Deadly Sin (Kaja Avberšek, Slovenia), Religions (Matej De Cecco, Slovenia), Summer deseo de identificarse con el espectador«. A Man for Malin (Malin Biller, Sweden), it functions as collective artwork and documentation at the same time. The described selection of works in the Impressions +386 exhibition is an exemplary illustration of the situation in contemporary Slovenian art. It is just one of the possible selections which demonstrates that the graphic arts in Slovenia are still “... in a position that does not need to be interpreted, decoded, worshiped or demystified. It only needs space in which to clearly see and present its desires”.2 Breda Škrjanec Exhibition Curator 19 20 Obras expuestas/Exhibited work Niebla (Damijan Sovec, Eslovenia, 8. smrtni greh/ El octavo pecado capital (Kaja Avberšek, Eslovenia), Religije/Religión (Matej De Cecco, Eslovenia), Poletna sapica/Brisa de verano (Dunja Janković, Croacia), Moški za Malin/Hombres para Malin (Malin Biller, Suecia). He completed his studies at the Secondary School for Design and Photography in 1994 and graduated in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 2000. The use and recycling of low-cost technologies and waste materials is a recognisable feature in his work. The artist mainly works in the public space. In his work, he amiably draws our attention to the fact that we live in a hyper-consumerist world, in which, however, we can still create an alternative for all those that feel excluded, or those that reject the consumer mainstream of life within contemporary society, by using “soft” forms of resistance, such as do-it yourself, open systems and the common good. He has taken part in many high profile exhibitions of contemporary art, including: 2008 – Seccesion, Vienna, Austria; 6th Taipei Biennial, Taipei, Taiwan; Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria; 2009 – Museumsquartir (MUMOK, Freiraum), Vienna, Austria. (Mojca Grmek) Más información en: www.solaprosticas.com The project Pri Zlatem stegnu (The Golden Thigh) was conceived by three visual artists, Nataša Skušek, Katja Skušek and Mladen Stropnik (up till 2010). Their work stems from the avant-garde notion that art should be a way of life. This is especially true for this project, in which their artistic activities and everyday private lives closely intertwine, since it started as a “creative kitchen” at social gatherings, where Nataša and Mladen are husband and wife, and Katja is their sister or sister-in-law. The starting point of the project is therefore the process of eating – a totally ordinary, but by no means trivial topic because eating is essential to sustain life, and therefore the most vulnerable to seizure by the reproducible mechanisms of capitalism. By transforming this process, the artists reveal the functioning of these mechanisms and at same time also represent an alternative. Nataša is concerned with the aesthetic component of eating and in this regard particularly with the absurdities, which lead to the dominance of the beautiful over the useful in the way that food is presented and served, how an atmosphere is created or a space decorated. Katja explores the link between eating and the demands of the contemporary ideal of beauty, noting that any epicurean trying to follow this will sooner or later find herself in a strange situation, where she is constantly exercising, buying magical devices to aid weight loss, diligently counting calories and at the end rewards herself for her efforts on special occasions with a large portion of something sweet. Mladen is particularly interested in how to (re)generate the rules, the do’s and don’ts in the process of eating, and since he observes that not much more than the effects of empty tradition, quasi-scientific directions, popular slogans and plain stupidity can be found in them, he prefers to breach them and maintain his common sense and integrity. The point where the investigations of the three artists intersect is the constantly throbbing desire, which in the quest for the forever new and different object of satisfaction, leads to obsession. Within the capitalism driven by consumerism, this state of mind seems to be just ideal. Más información en: www.stripburger.org In October 1992, Strip Core, which was established in 1989, issued the first volume of Stripburger, a Slovenian fanzine that focuses on comic strips, graphics and photography. Even today, Stripburger remains the only Slovenian comic that promotes practical and theoretical developments in the field, and includes comic strips by both local and international authors. It stimulates Slovenian comic artists to produce comics and develop their style. In addition, Stripburger organizes exhibitions of comics at home and abroad. It has heavily influenced the way in which the public in Slovenia sees comics. The film Stripburger in Motion is an animated version of eight comics that were published in Stripburger magazine: Love Train (Sascha Hommer, Germany), Messiah (Vladan Nikolić, Serbia), Judas the Catholic Squirrel (Alberto Vazquez, Spain), Fog (Damijan Sovec, Slovenia), 8th Deadly Sin (Kaja Avberšek, Slovenia), Religions (Matej De Cecco, Slovenia), Summer Breeze (Dunja Janković, Croatia), A Man for Malin (Malin Biller, Sweden). The film was created in 2010 on its 18 anniversary of the fanzine, with FORUM LJUBLJANA as its producer.
