“IF I HAD A HAMMER . . .”
In this bulletin, a little “farther on”, you will find a Page dedicated to Our Holy Redeemer’s efforts to raise us up
in an outdoor lift; not (yet) with the help of Josh Groban but with the help of Jackie Wilson. Participation in that
effort has raised close to twenty-thousand dollars, and in Jackie’s words adapted to those local efforts: “your
love keeps lifting Our Holy Redeemer higher, and higher”! Thank you.
“Thank you” must also be extended to the people who helped make Our Holy Redeemer’s II Annual Summer
Concerts on the Waterfront. And while all of us who experienced the wonder of it all can readily call to mind Our
Holy Redeemer’s Director of Music Michael Crouse and the performers of “A Night of Heartwarming and Soul
Refreshing Music” performed by and for People With Disabilities (10 June), “The Sing Off” featuring various
choral and acapella groups from our neighbouring high schools (17 June), “Highlights from Carousel, Westside
Story, and the Secret Garden” performed by The Voices (25 June), “Italian and American Favourites” performed
by These Three Tenors (29 July), an inspirational work entitled “Songs for a New World” presented by Jason
Robert Brown, Nicholas Ashe, Tyler Mason-Draffen and Freeport High School Alumni (12 August), and “An
Ecumenical Night of Song and Praise” lifted up by the choirs of Our Holy Redeemer and the Greater Second
Baptist Church of Freeport (19 August), there are quite a few other people that were just as “instrumental” in
making II Annual Summer Concerts on the Waterfront a manifestation of the Good News! To them, (Larry, Gene,
Dianne, Joann, Kathy, LJ, Bruce, Ed) and to the hundreds of people (Artie, Al, Ann, Phyllis, Joe, Gloria, … you) who
came home to 175 Woodcleft Avenue for one or more nights during Our Holy Redeemer’s II Annual Summer
Concerts on the Waterfront, I offer these words from American Singer, Songwriter and Musician Jackson Browne
which, with a little bit of adaptation from participants, speak to the Waterfront-experience of many who were
there!

The Family - 11. Male and Female (II)
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In the preceding catechesis on the family, I meditated on the first narrative of the creation of the human
being, in the first chapter of Genesis, where it is written: “God created man in his own image, in the image of
God he created him; male and female he created them” (1:27).
Today, I would like to complete the reflection with the second narrative, which we find in the second
chapter. Here we read that the Lord, after having created heaven and earth, “formed man of dust from the
ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (2:7). This is the
culmination of creation. But something is missing: then God places man in the most beautiful garden that he
might cultivate and look after it (cf. 2:15).
The Holy Spirit, who inspired the whole of the Bible, momentarily evokes the image of man alone —
something is missing — without woman. And the Holy Spirit evokes God’s thoughts, even His emotion, as He
gazes at Adam, observing him alone in the garden. He is free, he is a lord... but he is alone. And God sees
that this “is not good”: as if what is missing is communion, he lacks communion, the fullness is lacking. “It is
not good”, God says, and adds: “I will make him a helper fit for him” (2:18).
And so God brings all the animals to man; man gives to each its name — and this is another image of man’s
dominion over creation — but he sees that not one of the animals is like himself. Man continues alone.
When finally God presents woman, man exultantly recognizes that this creature, and this creature alone, is a
part of him: “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” (2:23). Finally, there is a reflection, a reciprocity.
When a person — to give an example to help us understand — wants to shake hands with another, he must
have that person before him: if he holds out his hand and no one is there... his hand remains outstretched,
there is no reciprocity. This was how man was, he lacked something to reach his fullness; reciprocity was
lacking. Woman is not a replica of man; she comes directly
from the creative act of God. The image of the “rib” in no
way expresses inferiority or subordination, but, on the
contrary, that man and woman are of the same substance
and are complimentary and that they also have this
reciprocity. And the fact that — also in that parable — God
moulds woman while man sleeps means precisely that she is
in no way man’s creation, but God’s. He also suggests
another point: in order to find woman — and we could say
to find love in woman — man first must dream of her and
then find her. God’s faith in man and in woman, those to whom he entrusted the earth, is generous, direct
and full. He trusts them. But then the devil introduces suspicion into their minds, disbelief, distrust, and
finally, disobedience to the commandment that protected them. They fall into that delirium of omnipotence
that pollutes everything and destroys harmony. We too feel it inside of us, all of us, frequently.
Sin generates distrust and division between man and woman. Their relationship will be undermined by a
thousand forms of abuse and subjugation, misleading seduction and humiliating ignorance, even the most
dramatic and violent kind. And history bears the scar. Let us think, for example, of those negative excesses
of patriarchal cultures. Think of the many forms of male dominance whereby the woman was considered
second class. Think of the exploitation and the commercialization of the female body in the current media
culture. And let us also think of the recent epidemic of distrust, skepticism, and even hostility that is
spreading in our culture — in particular an understandable distrust from women — on the part of a covenant
between man and woman that is capable, at the same time, of refining the intimacy of communion and of
guarding the dignity of difference.
If we do not find a surge of respect for this covenant, capable of protecting new generations from distrust
and indifference, from children coming into the world ever more uprooted from the mother’s womb. The
social devaluation for the stable and generative alliance between man and woman is certainly a loss for
everyone. We must return marriage and the family to the place of honour! The Bible says something
beautiful: man finds woman, they meet and man must leave something in order to find her fully. That is why
man will leave his father and mother to go to her. It’s beautiful! This means setting out on a new path. Man
is everything for woman and woman is everything for man.
The responsibility of guarding this covenant between man and woman is ours, although we are sinners and
are wounded, confused and humiliated, discouraged and uncertain; it is nevertheless for us believers a
demanding and gripping vocation in today’s situation. The same narrative of creation and of sin ends by
showing us an extremely beautiful icon: “The Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins,
and clothed them” (Gen 3:21). It is an image of tenderness towards the sinful couple that leaves our mouths
agape: the tenderness God has for man and woman! It’s an image of fatherly care for the human couple.
God himself cares for and protects his masterpiece.

LOVE AND LIFE
Relationship to Lived Experience
REFLECTION
When they were newlyweds, both were sure that this was the one person who completed their
world. They thought they could never love each other more. When they found they could not
have biological children, they adopted their little girl and discovered a new dimension to their
love. The day they first held her in their arms, they suddenly saw each other in a new light:
Mom and Dad. In becoming parents, they began to understand something new about why God
had brought them together. Their feelings of great joy were accompanied by feelings of
overwhelming responsibility; they knew they would need God’s help.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. What can couples who have no difficulty conceiving learn from an adopting couple like the
one in the story? In what additional ways can a married couple have a procreative
relationship and attitude?
2. Think of a couple with children whose family life you admire. From your observation, how
are the children a blessing to that couple’s marriage?
3. How can a couple maintain intimacy when they are parents?
4. How can we as a parish communicate the message that children are an important part of
marriage?
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
1. In what ways do you and your spouse need to change or grow in order to be able to welcome
a child (or another child) into the family?
2. If you are a parent, how has your child(ren) been a blessing to you? How have you changed
for the better since becoming a parent?
3. If you do not have children, how do you expect that having a child would change your
marriage? In His wisdom, God planned that man and woman would be made for each other.
How would you say that your spouse has been made for you?

CONSECRATED LIFE VOLUNTEERS
DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
Mr. Steven Barbaro, a volunteer tutor at The De La Salle
School during the 2014-2015 school year, is considering
consecrated life as a Brother of the Christian Schools. He
believes God has called him to serve Him in this way. As a
step in exploring the implications of this vocation he was recently officially
welcomed into the order as a postulant. He has joined three other men in a
Lasallian community in Philadelphia where they will spend the year considering
what God's will is for them. During the year they will learn more about St. John
Baptist De La Salle, study theology at La Salle University, and serve in ministry
at a Lasallian middle school like ours in Philadelphia. We at The De La Salle
School are happy to have played a part in Mr. Barbaro's discernment process
that led him to take this step in his life and look forward to addressing him as
Brother Steven soon.
At the same ceremony, attended by more than 150 Brothers, Brother Peter
Nguyen, FSC pronounced his final vows and Brothers Anthony Baginski, FSC,
David Deradoorian, FSC, Kenneth Kalinoski, FSC, and Anwar Martinez, FSC,
renewed their annual vows of association for the educational service of the poor,
poverty, chastity, obedience, and stability.
Please pray for all these men at various stages of initial formation in the District
of Eastern North America and pray that others may join them, especially during
this year that Pope Francis has designated as a Year for Consecrated Life.

Scripture Reflection
“To whom shall we go? You have the Words of Eternal Life. We have come to believe and are
convinced that You are the Holy One of God.” (See John 6:60-69) Are we likewise convinced?
Unless we are, there is always the possibility that someone or something may carry us away, that
we may choose to leave. It is only when we are convinced that Jesus is the Holy One of God, that
He has the Words of Eternal Life, that we can say Peter’s words: “To whom shall we go?” Joshua
of old was likewise convinced. “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (See Joshua
24, 1-2, 15-17, 18) This is the type of faith we need today. The faith that does not hang from a
couple of tacks, but the convinced faith that is held firmly nailed in its place by facts and reasoning,
by experience, and life. Peter had lived in closed company with Jesus for at least a year. He knew
Him. Likewise if we study the Word, pray often, and regularly come to church to receive Him in Holy
Communion, if we try to live the Christian life, and if we practice true devotion to His Blessed Mother
Mary, the Holy Mother of God, Jesus will become real to us. We will be convinced He is the Holy
One of God and will be able to say, “To whom shall we go? You have the Words of Eternal Life.”

FOUR POINTS OF ACTION RECOMMENDED
IN RESPONSE TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD

The week-long controversy in the media about Planned Parenthood’s
apparent practice of harvesting organs and parts of a child’s body for sale
during late term abortions should not end with a shrug of the shoulders
and business as usual. The tragic reality of abortion on demand in our
nation is a black mark on us as a society and an evil that can never be
overlooked. Now this practice of the taking of innocent life in the womb
is being compounded by the largest abortion provider in our nation by a
practice that should horrify us all, even the abortion providers
themselves.
The women on the tapes who described the procedures of late term abortion and suggested
“better ways” might be found to kill the child so that “more organs can be harvested for sale”
brings them and us to a new low in a society already become coarse in its indifference to
abortion, euthanasia and teenage suicide, not to mention the senseless killings that have been
increasing in frequency across our land.
I would suggest that four things need to be done.
First, the U.S. government should be called upon to stop financing Planned Parenthood with
taxpayers dollars, some $500 million according to one source.
Second, Planned Parenthood should “come clean,” admit they were wrong, ask for an outside
audit and, without our accepting what they do for a living, promise us and our society that they
will cease this practice of making money from acts that compound the horrific evil of abortion
itself.
Third, every citizen, and especially we who are Catholics, should demand of every candidate for
public office that he or she take a public stand on whether or not they support or oppose
Planned Parenthood’s heinous and cynical profit making from the tragedy of aborted children.
Fourth, we must pray daily for an end to the tragic scourge that
is abortion, the killing of the innocent, the harm done to women
and the shame of our society.

IT'S TIME TO GET READY - BEFORE THE STORM
 Develop a family preparedness plan before an actual storm threatens your area. Select
several places such as a friend's home in another town or a motel or shelter. Keep a list of
their phone numbers and a road map handy.
 Check with your veterinarian or pet advocacy group for information on where to shelter your
pets in the event that you need to evacuate your home during a storm.
 Remove damaged and diseased tree branches as soon as you notice them. Strategically
remove branches to make trees more wind resistant.
 If a hurricane is approaching, listen for weather updates on local radio or television stations
and the town's website.
 Organize your emergency supplies.
 Clear your yard of loose objects such as bicycles, lawn furniture, hanging plants and trash cans. Anchor all other
objects (no matter how heavy or large) that cannot be moved.
 Board your windows and doors. Taping windows will not prevent them from breaking, but may reduce the risk of
flying glass. Open all indoor traps or doors to your attic and close and lock all of your windows.
 Do not drain your pool completely. Lower water levels one foot to accommodate heavy rains. Add extra chlorine to
prevent contamination. Cover your pool pump system and securely anchor it in place.
 If you store a boat in your yard, lash it to your trailer securely. Let the air out of the trailer tires and secure the trailer
to something sturdy in the ground. If you store your boat in a marina, check your contract; some require that you
move it when a hurricane watch is issued. You are responsible for your boat.
 Be sure your vehicle is ready should you have to evacuate. Fill your vehicle's gas tank. Check your vehicle's oil and
water.

Una vez más los Caballeros de Colón patrocinaron la Barbacoa Anual de
Nuestro Santo Redentor en el Parque del Muelle, ¡y una vez más todos los
que asistieron se divirtieron muchísimo! ¡Hasta nuestro Nuevo Pastor
Asociado asistió y disfrutó de la excelente comida y diversión sobre la base
de una gran Fe! ¡Gracias CdC! Y gracias Vinny Mastroianni por volver en
sus mejores galas dominicales para darle la bienvenida a los que vinieron a
la Misa Dominical del sábado por la tarde!
¡El día siguiente, Domingo 9 de Agosto, hubo un banquete excelente un poco al este
del Parque del Muelle, en el 175 de la Avenida Woodcleft donde el “Padre Banquete”
(alias Padre Nick Zientarki) con la ayuda de la lectora visitante, Vicky Danielle, del
Centro de Recreo de Freeport, alimentó a casi 200 personas con el Pan de Vida! La
Misa en el Muelle concluirá su Temporada del 2015 el 23 de agosto a las 10:00 A.M.
¡Hace unos pocos días en el último Concierto en el Muelle el Coro de
Nuestro Santo Redentor se unirá al “Coro de Grandes Voces de
Alabanza de nuestros vecinos de la Segunda Iglesia Bautista de Freeport
poniendo fin a los Conciertos Veraniegos de la Milla! Esta noche
ecuménica de canto se efectuó a las 7 de la noche del miércoles 19 de
agosto en el 175 de la Avenida Woodcleft. ¡Resultó ser una noche
inolvidable para todos los que asistieron!
Por favor, haga planes para asistir al 7mo Día Anual de Aprecio por el Feligrés. ¡Este suceso anual, que se

La Familia - 11. Hombre y Mujer (II)
Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
En la anterior catequesis sobre la familia, me centré en el primer relato de la creación del ser humano, en el
primer capítulo del Génesis, donde está escrito: «Y creó Dios al hombre a su imagen, a imagen de Dios lo
creó, varón y mujer los creó» (1, 27).
Hoy quisiera completar la reflexión con el segundo relato, que encontramos en el segundo capítulo. Aquí
leemos que el Señor, después de crear el cielo y la tierra, «modeló al hombre del polvo del suelo e insufló en
su nariz aliento de vida; y el hombre se convirtió en ser vivo» (2, 7). Es el culmen de la creación. Pero falta
algo: Dios pone luego al hombre en un bellísimo jardín para que lo cultive y lo custodie (cf. 2, 15).
El Espíritu Santo, que inspiró toda la Biblia, sugiere por un momento la imagen del hombre solo —le falta
algo—, sin la mujer. Y sugiere el pensamiento de Dios, casi el sentimiento de Dios que lo observa, que
observa a Adán solo en el jardín: es libre, es señor,... pero está solo. Y Dios ve que esto «no es bueno»: es
como una falta de comunión, le falta una comunión, una falta de plenitud. «No es bueno» —dice Dios— y
añade: «voy a hacerle a alguien como él, que le ayude» (2, 18).
Entonces Dios presenta al hombre todos los animales; el hombre da a cada uno de ellos su nombre —y esta
es otra imagen del señorío del hombre sobre la creación—, pero no encuentra en ningún animal al otro
semejante a sí. El hombre sigue solo. Cuando Dios le presenta a la mujer, el hombre reconoce exultante que
esa criatura, y sólo ella, es parte de él: «es hueso de mis huesos y carne de mi carne» (2, 23). Al final hay un
gesto de reflejo, una reciprocidad. Cuando una
persona —es un ejemplo para comprender bien esto—
quiere dar la mano a otra, tiene que tenerla delante: si
uno tiende la mano y no tiene a nadie la mano queda
allí..., le falta la reciprocidad. Así era el hombre, le
faltaba algo para llegar a su plenitud, le faltaba la
reciprocidad. La mujer no es una «réplica» del hombre;
viene directamente del gesto creador de Dios. La
imagen de la «costilla» no expresa en ningún sentido
inferioridad o subordinación, sino, al contrario, que hombre y mujer son de la misma sustancia y son
complementarios y que tienen también esta reciprocidad. Y el hecho que —siempre en la parábola— Dios
plasme a la mujer mientras el hombre duerme, destaca precisamente que ella no es de ninguna manera una
criatura del hombre, sino de Dios. Sugiere también otra cosa: para encontrar a la mujer —y podemos decir
para encontrar el amor en la mujer—, el hombre primero tiene que soñarla y luego la encuentra.
La confianza de Dios en el hombre y en la mujer,
a quienes confía la tierra, es generosa, directa y
plena. Se fía de ellos. Pero he aquí que el maligno
introduce en su mente la sospecha, la
incredulidad, la desconfianza. Y al final llega la
desobediencia al mandamiento que los protegía.
Caen en ese delirio de omnipotencia que
contamina todo y destruye la armonía. También
nosotros lo percibimos dentro de nosotros
muchas veces, todos.
El pecado genera desconfianza y división entre el hombre y la mujer. Su relación se verá asechada por mil
formas de abuso y sometimiento, seducción engañosa y prepotencia humillante, hasta las más dramáticas y
violentas. La historia carga las huellas de todo eso. Pensemos, por ejemplo, en los excesos negativos de las
culturas patriarcales. Pensemos en las múltiples formas de machismo donde la mujer era considerada de
segunda clase. Pensemos en la instrumentalización y mercantilización del cuerpo femenino en la actual
cultura mediática. Pero pensemos también en la reciente epidemia de desconfianza, de escepticismo, e
incluso de hostilidad que se difunde en nuestra cultura —en especial a partir de una comprensible
desconfianza de las mujeres— respecto a una alianza entre hombre y mujer que sea capaz, al mismo tiempo,
de afinar la intimidad de la comunión y custodiar la dignidad de la diferencia.
Si no encontramos un sobresalto de simpatía por esta alianza, capaz de resguardar a las nuevas generaciones
de la desconfianza y la indiferencia, los hijos vendrán al mundo cada vez más desarraigados de la misma
desde el seno materno. La desvalorización social de la alianza estable y generativa del hombre y la mujer es
ciertamente una pérdida para todos. ¡Tenemos que volver a dar el honor debido al matrimonio y a la
familia! La Biblia dice algo hermoso: el hombre encuentra a la mujer, se encuentran, y el hombre debe dejar
algo para encontrarla plenamente. Por ello el hombre dejará a su padre y a su madre para ir con ella. ¡Es
hermoso! Esto significa comenzar un nuevo camino. El hombre es todo para la mujer y la mujer es toda para
el hombre.
La custodia de esta alianza del hombre y la mujer, incluso siendo pecadores y estando heridos, confundidos y
humillados, desanimados e inciertos, es, pues, para nosotros creyentes, una vocación comprometedora y
apasionante en la condición actual. El mismo relato de la creación y del pecado, en la parte final, nos
entrega un icono bellísimo: «El Señor Dios hizo túnicas de piel para Adán y su mujer, y los vistió» (Gen 3, 21).
Es una imagen de ternura hacia esa pareja pecadora que nos deja con la boca abierta: la ternura de Dios
hacia el hombre y la mujer. Es una imagen de cuidado paternal hacia la pareja humana. Dios mismo cuida y
protege su obra maestra.

creemos y sabemos, que Jesús es el Santo de Dios, que El tiene las palabras de vida eterna que podemos
decir las palabras de Pedro: “¿a quién iremos?” Josué el israelita fiel de la antigüedad estaba así de
convencido. “”En cuanto a mí toca, mi familia y yo serviremos al Señor.” (Vea Josué 24, 1-2, 15-17, 18) Esa
es la clase de fe que necesitamos hoy. La fe que no cuelga de un par de tachuelas, sino la fe convencida,
clavada firmemente por los hechos y el razonamiento, por la experiencia y la vida. Pedro había vivido en
estrecha compañía con Jesús por lo menos por un año. Él lo conocía. Igualmente, si nosotros estudiamos la
Palabra de Dios, oramos y venimos a recibirlo en la Santa Comunión con regularidad, si tratamos de vivir
una vida cristiana, Jesús será real para nosotros. Nos convenceremos de que él realmente es el “Santo de
Dios” y podremos decir: “Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna.”
