“P
ut out into the deep; do not be afraid.” Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel are thematically perfect, as a challenging prelude to
the Lenten season which begins this coming Wednesday.
Faith in Jesus Christ always requires movement, willingness to take action, courage to change, renew, and enliven. Discipleship in
pursuit of our Blessed Lord is not a static experience, but a constantly dynamic one. It means risking (in new ways) the “doing” of
God’s will in our lives. Following in the ways of Christ is a daily choice to actively respond to a holy calling which welcomes his Word
in our hearts and his healing touch in our souls. In short, each of us is asked to confidently put our “boats” into the depths of the
transformative mercy of God and allow God’s powerful sway to again take hold of us. When we do so, new things will happen; and our
Christian witness will become more effective. When we plumb anew the depths of mysteries of Christ, we are challenged to cultivate a
legacy of active faith which announces the Gospel with clarity. His mercy endures forever. Why should we be afraid to reach for his
hand and follow him with intentionality and confidence?
During the Jubilee Year of Mercy the Church around the world has been asked, among other things, to rededicate herself to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These spiritual agenda items grounded in our Lord’s teaching, align our lives with the Gospel
message of developing a merciful heart, and becoming an instrument of God’s mercy toward others. Doing so will truly serve as the
formula for personal and world peace, ushering in the Kingdom of God. On the outside we are invited to authenticate our faith by the
corporal works of mercy: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick,
visiting the imprisoned, and burying the dead. All these works recognize the God-given dignity in the human person, particularly the
most vulnerable among us. We are, likewise, invited to embrace the spiritual works of mercy: instructing the ignorant, correcting
sinners, advising the doubtful, showing patience to sinners and those in error, forgiving others, comforting the afflicted, and praying
for the living and the dead. All these works of mercy show a certain spiritual personality reflective of an interior life that is aligned
with the Gospel and the heart of Christ. As such, to inculcate these exterior behaviors with interior convictions, brings Christian
renewal to our lives, and establishes a spiritual legacy that confidently shows a deep Christian faith, lived with intentionality.
During the Jubilee Year of Mercy we also have before us the clarion calling to embrace the mercy of the Lord in our own souls,
to confess our brokenness and sins, and find renewal, healing and grace. Opportunities abound during this Year of Mercy to go to
confession, especially now that the season of Lent is about to dawn. Don’t miss the chance to be cleansed, healed, and renewed. His
mercy endures forever. Why should we be afraid?
Lent is an annual opportunity to do the necessary introspection that seeks to reorganize our lives, to take dynamic action,
making them what they are capable of being, making them what God meant them to be. Let’s put out into the deep this Lent,
and not be afraid.
“L
Cuaresma, y no tener miedo.

De todo corazón te damos gracias,

— Salmo 138 (137):1
— Psalm 138:1
“H
oly, holy, holy!” Ancient languages, like the
Hebrew used in the scriptures, did not always
have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah
could not say God was “holiest,” so he used the threefold
repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae
about these “three little words” that we sing at every Mass
serves as a reminder that answering God’s call has to be
grounded in awareness of God’s holiness. In Isaiah and in
the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the
revelation of God’s power and might: the seraphim in the
temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not
wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a
response in mission, Isaiah’s “Here I am, send me!” and the
disciples’ leaving everything to follow Jesus. And so must
our own “Holy, Holy, Holy!” lead us to Christ in the
Eucharist every Sunday, and to a life following him day by
day.

C

Have you ever wondered what the Year of Mercy is about? What is the big deal that Pope Francis declared this Year
of Mercy as an Extraordinary Jubilee? Will this theme of Mercy have any real impact on me and my day-to-day
life? Come to the Catholic Casseroles beginning at 6:30 pm on February 17th & 24th and March 2nd & 9th and delve
further into the theology of Mercy with Father Tran. As Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, this February 10th,
come share fellowship and community by enjoying a meal (it's potluck so bring a dish!) and listening to these Lenten
reflections regarding Mercy. Graciously supervised by the Son Flower Hospitality Ministry. Contact the Ministries
Office for more information.
