Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 29, 2013
Dear Friends,
As I read the following “If I Knew,” by George Michael Grossman, I thought about the words of Stephen Grellet:
“I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow human
being let me do it now. Let me not defer it for I shall not pass this way again.” So often we procrastinate. How often have
you attended a funeral with regret that you had not said what needed to be said weeks, months or years before – but now it is
too late? Maybe you’ve regretted not tearing down the wall you had kept up for so long and usually for an inconsequential
reason in the first place? How often have we been slow in just showing appreciation to another? Or simply telling another
that you love them? My grandmother had a favorite expression: “Give me my flowers while I am living.”- say the nice
things now. Life is too short and some of us are too stingy sharing our love and appreciation towards others. Monday,
September 16th, could be a wake up call for how short life can be, when 13 people were killed at the Navy Yard, just a few
miles away in Washington, DC. All of them had plans for the end of the day, returning home to have dinner with family or
friends. That time never came. How easy to take family, friends , indeed life itself for granted. The following is food for
thought for all of us.
IF I KNEW
If I knew it would be the last time
that I’d see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly,
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get.
I’d like to say how much I love you
and hope we never forget.
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
So, if you’re waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you’ll surely regret today.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say, “I love you”,
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
That you didn’t take the extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their last wish.
I would be there to share your day,
Well, I’m sure you’ll have so many more,
so I can just let this one slip away.
So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear.
Tell them how much you love them
And that you’ll always hold them dear.
For surely there’s always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.
Take the time to say, “I’m sorry,”
“Please forgive me,” “Thank you,” or “It’s ok,”
And if tomorrow never comes,
you’ll have no regrets about today.
There will always be another day
To say, “I love you”,
And certainly there’s another chance

OCTOBER IS COMING……
In a couple of days the beautiful month of
October will be upon us. This month, along
with the month of May, has long been dedicated to Mary, Our Blessed Mother, the
Mother of Jesus. It seems most appropriate
therefore to write about her this week.
Mary herself led a quiet life after the death
of Jesus, living as a respected member of the Christian
community at Ephesus. It wasn’t until the Council of
Ephesus in 431 A.D., that devotion to Mary really began
to increase. Churches were dedicated to her and by the
mid 600’s, feast days began to appear on the Church calendar. During the Middle Ages, Mary was looked upon
as a spiritual mother to all Christians and was thought to
have great maternal influence with God. Because Christians at that time looked upon God as a stern punitive
Father, they welcomed the thought that Mary would intercede on their behalf. Many new titles were given to
her with the expectation that she would and could influence God. (Understanding this concept, it is easy to understand why many other Religions have the impression
that some Catholics think of Mary as a God). Over the
last 500-600 years, Marion devotions have continued to
flourish and two major doctrines concerning Mary were
defined by the Church – the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception by Pope Sixtus IV in 1476 and the Feast of
the Bodily Assumption of Mary into Heaven by Pope
Pius IX in 1878. Over the next couple of weeks we will
take a closer look at the origin of the many Marian devotions and also the various prayers that center on Mary.

October 6, after all the Sunday Masses, you will be
able to view the program Keeping the Promise
Alive (a.k.a. the Virtus Class Update) after
the Sunday Masses in the Parish Hall. It takes 25
minutes for the DVD to run from Start to Finish. The Diocese of Arlington requires that all of
our volunteers keep updated annually. This program
is for those volunteers who have already attended
the 4 hour Virtus program already, and does not take
the place of the initial program.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will
take place on Friday October 4th after the
7:30am Mass. Closing will be at 11:00am.

The monthly food collection will take place
next Sunday, October 6th. Please bring nonperishable foods to the foyer of the church.
There is always a need for mac & cheese, dried
beans, peanut butter/jelly, dry powered milk,
juice (large can or small boxes), canned tomato/ sauce/
paste, #2 sugar/flour and boxed potatoes. All canned
food items are welcomed. They are also in need of personal items ( razors/ shaving cream/ deodorant, facial
tissue and laundry detergent.) ECHO also accepts small
appliances. For more information pick up a brochure in

KofC Blood Drive: The next blood drive will be Saturday,
Oct 5 from 7 AM to noon at St Raymond of Peñafort Church.
Our council is cosponsoring this blood drive with the St. John
Bosco Council. Donors can make a “life saving appointment”
by signing up after Mass at the back of the church or by calling/emailing John Landy 703-250-1492 or

The next business meeting is Tuesday, Oct 1. This meeting
will be in the cry/green room in the church due to schedule
conflicts with the parish hall. Rosary is at 7:15pm and meeting around 7:35pm.
NATIVITY PARISH….40 YEARS OLD
Did you know that our parish was forty years old last June
11? “The Origins of the Church of the Nativity: June
1973” will be the subject of an exhibit by Bob Clark at
Burke History Day, Saturday, October 12, 2013, sponsored
by the Burke Historical Society. The focal point of the
exhibit will be a 1971 map of St. Mary’s Parish (Nativity’s
parent parish) where the boundaries of a new proposed
parish are outlined, the first time Nativity Parish appears in
any document. Bob will be available to answer questions
about the map and Nativity’s origins, as well as to discuss
his project to compile and preserve the history of Nativity.
Burke History Day will feature exhibits, activities and
presentations about the people, places and events that have
shaped the Burke we know today. The day’s events will
run from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, are free and open to the
public. The events will take place at the Burke Volunteer
Fire Department, 9501 Old Burke Lake Road. Public parking is available in the Giant Food shopping center across
the street from the Post Office, and on Old Burke Lake
Road near the Southern Railway tracks.

Older Adults Shape Up Mentally and Physically with
the Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax-Burke:
Join the Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax-Burke (SCFB) for
its Fall session of Adventures in Learning. This program
is open to all adults age 50 or better. Registrants bring a
bag lunch and stay for a full day of classes/activities and
socializing, or pick and choose the classes that interest

The Traditional Choir is actively seeking new
members. Male voices are especially needed.
No audition or singing experience is required,
just a desire to enhance the liturgy and sing in
harmony with others.
The choir sings at 9 a.m. Sunday Mass

EL GRAN ABISMO QUE SE ABRE ENTRE LOS RICOS EPULONES Y LOS POBRES
LÁZAROS

1. Entre nosotros y vosotros se abre un abismo inmenso. La parábola refleja un mundo real que existía en tiempos de
Jesús y que existe en nuestro mundo actual. También hoy hay entre nosotros muchos ricos epulones, que banquetean espléndidamente, y hay muchísimos Lázaros que no tienen ni lo necesario para vivir con dignidad. Esto no es una consecuencia
necesaria de la naturaleza humana, sino una consecuencia de la naturaleza humana, cuando ésta se deja llevar de la tentación
de un inmenso egoísmo y de una inmensa ambición. Podemos luchar contra esta tentación y podemos vencerla, como la
vencieron muchos santos y muchas personas justas y honradas. Los cristianos tenemos la obligación moral y religiosa de
luchar valientemente contra la desigualdad social que existe en nuestra sociedad. Renunciar a la lucha contra la desigualdad
no puede ser nunca una actitud cristiana. Jesús, el Cristo, vivió en lucha continua contra la desigualdad social de su tiempo y
empeñó su propia vida en esta batalla. Una persona, o una sociedad, que no trata con todas sus fuerzas de suprimir el abismo
que existe entre los más ricos y los más pobres no es una persona, o una sociedad, cristiana. Es verdad que, ordinariamente,
una sola persona no puede hacer mucho para remediar la inmensa desigualdad social, el inmenso abismo, que existe en
nuestra sociedad, pero cada uno de nosotros debe hacer lo poco, o mucho, que pueda hacer. Nuestra condición de cristianos
nos lo exige.
2. Y, estando en el infierno, en medio de los tormentos, levantando los ojos, vio de lejos a Abrahán y a Lázaro en su
seno. Es interesante observar que, según la parábola, el rico epulón, cuando banqueteaba espléndidamente, no había visto al
pobre Lázaro, al que tenía muy cerca echado en su portal, y, en cambio ahora lo vio desde muy lejos. La vida, desgraciadamente, es así: no vemos al que nos necesita, aunque esté delante de nuestras propias narices, y en cambio sí vemos, hasta de
lejos, a aquel que nosotros necesitamos. Esto es algo muy habitual entre nosotros, pero no por ser habitual podemos decir
que es bueno moralmente. Los cristianos debemos vivir siempre mirando al prójimo, sobre todo al prójimo más necesitado.
Es verdad que, en el caso concreto de dar o no dar una limosna económica a alguna persona que nos la pide, no siempre nos
va a resultar fácil discernir con claridad a quiénes debemos dársela y a quiénes no. En la mendacidad organizada puede
haber mucho engaño, o afán de engañar, pero hay muchas maneras de ayudar económicamente a las personas necesitadas y
los cristianos debemos estar siempre dispuestos a mirar y ver a las personas que, de verdad, necesitan nuestra ayuda.
3.- Os ungís con perfumes exquisitos y no os doléis del desastre de José. El profeta Amós, ocho siglos antes de Cristo, no
se anduvo con rodeos a la hora de criticar a los ricos epulones de su tiempo. Les dice, en nombre del Señor, que su pecado
va a ser duramente castigado: “se acabará la orgía de los disolutos”. Porque Yahveh es un Dios justo y liberador, y no va a
permitir que sus hijos sean injustos y corruptos. Lo mismo nos diría hoy el profeta Amós a los cristianos del siglo XXI,
porque el Dios de Jesús de Nazaret es un Dios justo y misericordioso, y no puede permitir que los que nos llamamos sus
hijos, los cristianos, seamos injustos e inmisericordes con el prójimo.
4.- Hombre de Dios, practica la justicia, la piedad, la fe, el amor. Si nosotros, los cristianos, llevamos a la práctica estos
consejos que da Pablo a Timoteo, seguro que Dios nos va a considerar como auténticos hijos suyos y nos admitirá en su reino eterno. Pero si no escuchamos en esta vida a Pablo, a los profetas, a Cristo Jesús; si vivimos como ricos epulones, sin
ver a los pobres Lázaros que sufren a nuestro lado, nadie podrá salvarnos de la condena de nuestro Dios.

La originalidad de la fe cristiana
La fe cristiana cree esto: que Jesús es el Hijo de
Dios que vino a dar su vida para abrir a todos el
camino del amor. Por lo tanto tiene razón, querido doctor Scalfari, cuando ve en la encarnación
del Hijo de Dios la piedra angular de la fe cristiana. Tertuliano escribía: «caro cardo salutis»,
la carne (de Cristo) es la base de la salvación. Porque la encarnación, es decir, el hecho de que el Hijo de Dios haya venido
en nuestra carne y haya compartido alegrías y tristezas, triunfos y derrotas de nuestra existencia, hasta el grito de la cruz,
experimentando todo en el amor y en la fidelidad al Abbà,
testimonia el increíble amor que Dios tiene respecto a cada
hombre, el valor inestimable que le reconoce. Cada uno de
nosotros, por lo tanto, está llamado a hacer suya la mirada y la
elección del amor de Jesús, para entrar en su manera de ser, de
pensar y de actuar. Esta es la fe, con todas las expresiones que
se describen puntualmente en la Encíclica.
Siempre en el editorial del 7 de julio, Usted me pregunta también cómo entender la originalidad de la fe cristiana, ya que
esta se basa precisamente en la encarnación del Hijo de Dios,
en comparación con otras creencias que giran en trono a la
absoluta trascendencia de Dios. La originalidad, diría yo,
radica en el hecho de que la fe nos hace partícipes, en Jesús, en
la relación que Él tiene con Dios, que es Abbà y, de este
modo, en la la relación que Él tiene con todos los demás hombres, incluidos los enemigos, en signo del amor.
En otras palabras, la filiación de Jesús, como ella se presenta a
la fe cristiana, no se reveló para marcar una separación insuperable entre Jesús y todos los demás: sino para decirnos que ,
en Él, todos estamos llamados a ser hijos del único Padre y
hermanos entre nosotros. La singularidad de Jesús es para la
comunicación, y no para la exclusión. Por cierto, de aquello se
deduce también --y no es poca cosa--, aquella distinción entre
la esfera religiosa y la esfera política, que está consagrado en
el «dar a Dios lo que es de Dios y al César lo que es del
César», afirmada claramente por Jesús y en la que, con gran
trabajo, se ha construido la historia de Occidente.
La Iglesia, por lo tanto, está llamada a diseminar la levadura y
la sal del Evangelio, y por lo tanto, el amor y la misericordia
de Dios que llega a todos los hombres, apuntando a la meta

ultraterrena y definitiva de nuestro destino, mientras que a la sociedad civil y política le toca la difícil tarea de articular y encarnar
en la justicia y en la solidaridad, en el derecho y en la paz, una vida
cada vez más humana.
Para los que viven la fe cristiana, eso no significa escapar del
mundo o de la investigación de cualquier hegemonía, sino al servicio de la humanidad, a todo hombre y a todos los hombres, a partir
de la periferia de la historia y suscitando el sentido de la esperanza
que impulsa a hacer el bien a pesar de todo y mirando siempre más
allá.
La promesa hecha por Dios al pueblo judío
Usted me pregunta también, al término de su primer artículo, ¿qué
debemos decirle a nuestros hermanos judíos sobre la promesa hecha
a ellos por Dios? ¿acaso quedó en el vacío? Es esta –créame- una
pregunta que nos desafía radicalmente como cristianos, ya que con
la ayuda de Dios, especialmente a partir del Concilio Vaticano II,
hemos descubierto que el pueblo judío sigue siendo para nosotros,
la raíz santa de la que germinó Jesús. También yo, en la amistad que
he cultivado a lo largo de todos estos años con nuestros hermanos
judíos, en Argentina, muchas veces me cuestioné ante Dios en la
oración, sobre todo cuando la mente se iba al recuerdo de la terrible
experiencia de la Shoah. Lo que puedo decirle, con el apóstol Pablo,
es que nunca ha fallado la fidelidad de Dios a su alianza con Israel y
que, a través de las pruebas terribles de estos siglos, los judíos han
conservado su fe en Dios. Y por esto, con ellos nunca seremos lo
suficientemente agradecidos como Iglesia, sino también como humanidad. Ellos justamente perseverando en la fe en el Dios de la
alianza los invitan a todos, también a nosotros cristianos, al estar
siempre a la espera, como los peregrinos, del regreso del Señor y
que por lo tanto, siempre debemos estar abiertos a Él y nunca cerrarnos ante lo que ya hemos alcanzado.
Tres respuestas más
Llego así a las tres preguntas que me pone en el artículo del 7 de
agosto. Me parece que, en los dos primeros, lo que le su corazón
quiere es entender la actitud de la Iglesia hacia los que no comparten la fe de Jesús.
· En primer lugar, me pregunta si el Dios de los cristianos perdona
a los que no creen y no buscan la fe. Teniendo en cuenta que -y es la
clave- la misericordia de Dios no tiene límites si nos dirigimos a Él
con un corazón sincero y contrito, la cuestión para quienes no creen
en Dios es la de obedecer a su propia conciencia. El pecado, aún
para los que no tienen fe, existe cuando se va contra la conciencia.
Escuchar y obedecerla significa de hecho, decidir ante lo que se
percibe como bueno o como malo. Y en esta decisión se juega la
bondad o la maldad de nuestras acciones.
· En segundo lugar, Usted me pregunta si el pensamiento según el
cual no existe ningún absoluto, y por lo tanto ninguna verdad absoluta, sino solo una serie de verdades relativas y subjetivas, se trate
de un error o de un pecado. Para empezar, yo no hablaría, ni
siquiera para quien cree, de una verdad «absoluta», en el sentido de
que absoluto es
aquello que está desatado, es decir, que sin ningún tipo de relación.
Ahora, la verdad, según la fe cristiana, es el amor de Dios hacia
nosotros en Cristo Jesús. Por lo tanto, ¡la verdad es una relación! A
tal punto que cada uno de nosotros la toma, la verdad, y la expresa a
partir de sí mismo: de su historia y cultura, de la situación en la que
vive, etc.
Esto no quiere decir que la verdad es subjetiva y variable, ni mucho
menos. Pero sí significa que se nos da siempre y únicamente como
un camino y una vida. ¿No lo dijo acaso el mismo Jesús: «Yo soy el
camino, la verdad y la vida»? En otras palabras, la verdad es en definitiva todo un uno con el amor, requiere la humildad y la apertura
para ser encontrada, acogida y expresada. Por lo tanto, hay que entender bien las condiciones y, quizás, para salir de los confines de
una contraposición... absoluta, replantear en profundidad el tema.
Creo que esto es hoy una necesidad imperiosa para entablar aquel
diálogo pacífico y constructivo que deseaba desde el comienzo de
esta mi opinión.
· En la última pregunta me interroga si, con la desaparición del
hombre sobre la tierra, desaparecerá también el pensamiento capaz
de pensar en Dios. Es verdad, la grandeza del hombre está en ser
capaz de pensar en Dios. Y por lo tanto, en el poder vivir una
relación consciente y responsable con Él.
Pero la relación es entre dos realidades. Dios -este es mi pensamiento y esta es mi experiencia, ¡y cuántos, ayer y hoy lo comparten!-, no es una idea, aunque sea un alto fruto del resultado del
pensamiento del hombre. Dios es una realidad con la «R» mayúscula. Jesús lo revela -y tiene una relación viva con Él-, como un
Padre de infinita bondad y misericordia. Dios no depende, por lo
tanto, de nuestra forma de pensar. Y de otro lado, mismo cuanto
terminará la vida del hombre sobre la tierra –y para la fe cristiana de
todos modos, este mundo así como lo conocemos está destinado a
tener un fin- el hombre no acabará de existir, y en una manera que
nosotros no sabemos, tampoco el universo que fue creado con él. La
Escritura habla de «cielos nuevos y tierra nueva» y afirma que, al
final, en el dónde y en el cuándo, que está más allá de nosotros, pero
hacia el cual, en la fe tendemos con deseo y espera, Dios será «todo
en todos».
Estimado doctor Scalfari, concluyo así mis reflexiones, suscitadas
por lo que ha querido decirme y preguntarme. Acójalas como una
respuesta tentativa y provisional, pero sincera y confiada, con la
invitación que le hice de andar una parte del camino juntos. La Iglesia, créame, a pesar de todos los retrasos, infidelidades, errores y
pecados que haya cometido y todavía pueda cometer en los que la
componen, no tiene otro sentido ni propósito que no sea vivir y dar
testimonio de Jesús: Él que fue enviado por el Abbà «para anunciar
a los pobres la Buena Nueva, me ha enviado a proclamar la liberación a los cautivos y la vista a los ciegos, para dar la libertad a
los oprimidos y proclamar un año de gracia del Señor» (Lc. 4, 1819).
