Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six
months of extraordinary celebrations. The Incarnation
mystery: Jesus’ advent, nativity, epiphany. The Paschal
mystery: Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost’s
Holy Spirit. The solemnities of Holy Trinity and Jesus’
Body and Blood. Today the Church resumes Sundays
in Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary
mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet the one who
benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is not the
dead son but his widowed mother. With her husband
and only son deceased, this woman’s material support,
in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her
emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on
society’s “peripheries.” One of Pope Francis’ hopes in
calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to
transform us into more extraordinary Christians, by
making our caring outreach to just such vulnerable people, and our practical self-sacrificing love for them, our
ordinary, daily, Christian way of life!

En Ya llegamos a la mitad del Año Litúrgico 2016 llenos de celebraciones extraordinarias. El misterio de la
Encarnación: el Adviento, la Navidad y la Epifanía de
Jesús. El misterio Pascual: la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Jesús, el Pentecostés del Espíritu Santo. Las
Solemnidades de la Santísima Trinidad y del Cuerpo y
la Sangre de Cristo. Hoy la Iglesia regresa a lo que se
llama Domingos del Tiempo Ordinario, pero con un
Evangelio de extraordinaria misericordia: Jesús revive a
un hombre que estaba muerto; sin embargo, quien más
se beneficia de su extraordinaria misericordia no es el
hombre muerto sino su madre viuda. Con su esposo
muerto y su único hijo fallecido y en una sociedad patriarcal no hay quien se encargue de la manutención de
esta mujer. Así que su apoyo emocional, la deja indefensa, abandonada en la “periferia” de la sociedad. Una
de las esperanzas del Papa Francisco al convocar este
Año Jubilar de la Misericordia es transformarnos en
cristianos extraordinarios, haciendo que nuestra atención llegue a las personas más vulnerables con nuestro
amor generoso por ellos, ¡nuestra forma de vida cristiana ordinaria, diaria!

T
o have compassion is to feel with another
person. Feeling with another involves paying
attention. Jesus is moved by pity or compassion
for a grieving widow. He raises her son to life, and
gives him back to her.
Elijah and Jesus paid attention to people in need.
Their attentiveness gave them compassion for
those people. By paying attention to God and to
the other, we feel with the other, and God
responds to us and through our words and deeds.
Pay attention to what is going on in your life and
in the world around you. Let God see your heart
as clearly as Jesus could see that of the widow of
Nain. Turn to God in prayer like Paul. Through
attentive compassion the Lord will visit his people
today.
Our Festival is next week-end. I hope to see many of
you there, having a relaxing and fun time.
Tener compasión es estar en los zapatos de la otra
persona, se trata de poner atención. Jesús es
conmovido por la compasión de una viuda en su
dolor. Él le regresa a vida su hijo y se lo entrega a ella.
Elías y Jesús le pusieron atención a la gente en
necesidad. Su atención les dio compasión por las
demás personas. Sentimos a los demás al
ponerle atención a Dios, y Dios nos responde a
través de nuestras palabras y obras.
Pongan atención en lo que pasa en tu vida y en
tu entorno. Deje que Dios vea tu corazón tan
claro como Jesús vio a la viuda en Naím.
Récenle a Dios así como lo hizo Pablo. A través
de la compasión atenta es como Dios visitará a su
Pueblo el día de hoy.
Nuestro Festival es el próximo fin de semana, espero
ver a todos para pasar un buen tiempo juntos.

Congratulations to the 34 teenagers and 11 adults who
received their Confirmation yesterday with His Eminence Bishop Thomas J. Curry, DD, PhD, VG. I hope
that the Holy Spirit has blessed the Confirmed with
many Gifts and Talents. I hope that the Acclamation of
the Gospel becomes true to the newly confirmed: “A
great prophet has risen in our midst. God has visited his people” (Luke 7:16).

New Years Retreat Day
An early reminder from the Spiritual Life Committee
Dear Family,
We repeatedly hear from parishioners that they would appreciate going off-site for retreat day experiences, so we offer the following
information. This is an early look at a New Year Retreat Day that will be held offsite. It is never too early to be prepared!
The New Years Retreat Day takes place at Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino on Saturday January 7; the title: Called to be Benedictions of Grace will be facilitated by parishioner Josephine Broehm. The cost is $35 without lunch and $45 with lunch. If we know in
time, we can organize carpools. We hope this gives you ample opportunity to plane and save for this retreat opportunity. To RSVP,
please notify the office so we know how many carpools we will need. If you are will to drive, let us know as well. Retreat questions can
