THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 25, 2015
A Word from
Our Pastor Fr. Ron Weissbeck
My dear family in Christ,
The gospel passage we encounter this weekend is
about a blind man, Bartimaeus. I couldn’t help but make a
connection with a surprise that happened to me when I was in
the 7th grade. I couldn’t see the board while sitting in the
back of the classroom. Although I moved closer and closer, I
still had trouble seeing the writing on the board. After an eye
examination, I was told that I am very nearsighted. I am
blind, to put it bluntly, without corrective lenses or contacts.
Even though I had new prescriptions regularly, within a few
weeks sometimes my vision would become blurry again
That’s my physical “blindness.”
Physical impairment and complete blindness is an
unfortunate reality, but the message goes beyond the
observable. The story in the Gospel of Mark begins with
total physical blindness, but that’s only to draw the hearers
into an experience much more challenging and demanding.
Today when a person has trouble seeing, it only
makes sense to undergo an eye exam. It’s much easier to get
a reading on the physical condition of sight, but what if our
blindness lies beyond the physical state? Can we identify
our lack of vision when it pertains to emotional, spiritual, or
even cultural blindness? I would like to suggest a different
test for potential blindness that involves the Lord.
What is being offered by the Word of God is an
invitation to let the Lord Jesus become the healer. It’s more
about turning to Him and trusting His approach to being
healed of blindness, than finding excuses and expect others
to do the changing. This means putting faith in the person of
Jesus before fulfilling rules and regulations. This doesn’t
mean rules are not necessary, but rules without a connection
to the person and teachings of Jesus are hollow. The man,
Bartimaeus, put his total trust in Jesus and made an
appropriate confession, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on
me,” (Mark 10:47). The call to faith in this example
demands a receptivity to a person, namely Jesus, and not just
a healing remedy that calls for no change in the behavior of
the person or persons healed.
TRUE BLINDNESS
Bartimaeus caused a stir. Normally he sat by the side
of the road being a “good blind beggar.” But one day
Jesus passed nearby. Bartimaeus jumped up and called
out to Jesus.
We can imagine him turning toward the direction of
the commotion and noise. Bartimaeus probably had his
arms outstretched as he shouted out to the Son of David.
The people who knew him were embarrassed by his
outburst. They tried to hush him up and get him to sit
back down by the roadside. Their actions spoke volumes: “Bartimaeus, you’re not fit for Jesus. ” But it was
okay for them and other “sighted” people to follow Jesus.
In today’s readings, we learn that true blindness is not a
condition of our eyes but of our hearts.

"Son of David, have pity on me."
Jesus stopped and said, "Call him."
So they called the blind man, saying
to him, "Take courage; get up, Jesus
is calling you."
Jesus said to him in reply, "What do
you want me to do for you?" The
blind man replied to him, "Master, I
want to see."

Respect Life Prayer Vigil
Reflection
Come with us to pray at the Boulder Abortion Clinic for an
end to abortion. We will pray silently and peacefully for
the babies lost to abortion including their families, the clinic
workers, and our country. We will be carpooling on
Fridays through October 30th.
Sometimes we can't see the things that are right in front of
us. It's not that we're blind. Instead, we are distracted. That's
one reason so many states or municipalities have outlawed
texting while driving. It is said that drivers that are texting
are taking their eyes off the road for a minimum of five
seconds. Most do it for a longer time. At highway speeds a
car will travel four-hundred-forty feet, almost
one-and-a-half times the length of a football field. A lot can
happen in that distance, including a crash. Of course, one
doesn't have to be texting while driving to run into
something while distracted. Running into someone can
happen almost anywhere.
It just so happened that blind Bartimaeus was in the
right location to run into Jesus. Well, he didn't actually
“run” into him. Bartimaeus was sitting on the side of the
road and the crowds passed him by, and when he heard what
all the hubbub was about, Bartimaeus called out to Jesus
asking to be healed. The noise of the crowd provoked
Bartimaeus, and in turn, the cries of Bartimaeus broke
through the noise to catch the attention of Jesus.
Sometimes things happen in our own lives that
break through the distractions that may surround us every
day. Illness is one of those times that changes how we
interact with the world. Our routine is broken. We're no
longer on cruise control. We have to reassess where we're
at. One of the things that we can do when we're sick is ask
to celebrate the sacrament of anointing of the sick. This
prayer for healing can bring family and friends together to
ask for comfort and hope in a time of trial and distress. The
sacrament doesn't guarantee full health. But it is our
Catholic prayer, asking God to restore us to the community
of faith and to make us whole again so that we can serve
others.
We will leave St. John’s at 9:00 a.m., arrive in Boulder at
9:30 a.m., and pray until
10:30 a.m.
We should
return to St. John’s by
11:15 a.m. Please call
Amy at 303-682-8824 if
you want a ride or have
questions.

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 25, 2015
Catechist's Corner
Liz Smith
Catholic Religious Education (CREED)
Hello St. John’s Families,
Happy Halloween
Since I have begun working at St. John’s, Father
Ron has seen the need and tasked me with bringing the
youth of our parish together with their families to
accomplish works of mercy and service. It is a role I have
taken on with great excitement.
As Catholics we are taught to “Spread the Good
News” and to “Help thy neighbor.” The very best way to
learn our faith…is to live it. Many times we may forget
what a book taught us but memories of events in our lives
stay with us forever. We’d like to assist our parish
families create memories of giving of oneself and in doing
so make a few friends along the way. Giving can be in the
form of time, talent or material things. It is sharing all of
the gifts given to us by God with others. In doing so, we
“Spread the Good News” through action.
Since this is a totally new endeavor, I’d like to
start by having a meeting with any child 7th grade and
older with any parent who’d like to be involved to share
the ideas I have for this group and of course hear any of
yours. I want to build this WITH you and I especially
would like to have the youth play the most active role. I
see this ministry meeting once a month to discuss
upcoming events/projects, talk about our mission as a
group, and a time for all of us to discuss other acts of
service/mission we encounter in our daily lives and in the
news (so researching current events...finding some GOOD
in the world.) I see some monthly meetings maybe even
getting together to watch a video on inspiring service/
mission stories and discussing them and a place for
friendships to grow. Let’s get started!!
I’d like for us to meet for the first
time, Wednesday, November 4th, 4:oo-5:00 p.m. in Martin
Hall (SJBS Middle School Cafeteria).
Married Couple Canonized
Blessed Louis Martin and Zelie Guerin,
parents of Saint Therese of Lisieux, will be
canonized this Sunday in Saint Peter's Square by
Pope Francis.
In Spain, 2008, at just six months
gestation a little girl was born. She was fighting
for her life with a cerebral hemorrhage and other
severe ailments.
Her loved ones and many Carmelite
sisters sought the miraculous intervention of the
Martins. The Vatican recognized the baby's
healing as miraculous.
The couple was chosen to highlight the
key role parents play in the spiritual and human
upbringing of their children. This historic event
marks the first time a married couple are declared
saints in modern times.

St. John’s Food Bank
and Outreach
By John Williams
There are many times that we see the hand of God
in the Food Bank Ministry. A couple of months ago we
were not getting our usual allotment of meat from
Community Food Share. They were experiencing a short
fall of meat donations. We were concerned we would have
to purchase meat for our families and then God stepped in.
A parishioner donated 250 pounds of ground beef, just in
time. Approximately two weeks later, we were getting low
on meat once again. A gentleman representing a
consortium of individuals, one of which a St. John’s
parishioner, donated 500 pounds of ground beef portioned
out in one pound packages.
Recently the Food Bank was short on delivery
drivers. A new driver, who is part of the M.U.M.S. group
at St. Johns signed up to drive. She shared her experiences
with other M.U.M.S. ladies and was able to sign up three
new delivery drivers.
Last Sunday evening, we received a call from the
H.O.P.E. organization informing us of a loss of power.
The food bank shares the same breaker and there was great
concern about the power to the refrigerators and freezers.
Upon arrival, all the lighting in the food bank was
inoperative except for the refrigeration, they were up and
running. On Monday, an electrician determined that one
phase of the electricity was loose and shorting out. He
contacted Longmont Power and they quickly made the
necessary repairs.
The Food Bank is extremely thankful for the meat
donations, our new group of food bank drivers, and power
to the refrigerators and freezers. A big thank you to God
for watching over this ministry.
Holy Hour of Adoration
For the 40 Days for Life campaign, St. John’s will set
aside a Holy Hour of Adoration in our Immaculate
Heart of Mary chapel each Wednesday of the
campaign from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. through October
29th. We will pray for an end to abortion, and for the
babies, parents, grandparents, siblings, and abortion
clinic workers.
Thank you Knights of Columbus
The Board of Directors, staff and
volunteers at H.O.P.E., wish to extend sincere
gratitude to the Knights of Columbus for their
tremendous offerings to the community.
Their extensive contributions include: 60
-80 monthly soup angel meals, volunteering and
contributing to our annual fundraiser
Celebrate HOPE, special projects for the nightly
outreach van, and transporting clients to the
Justice Center shelter on bitter cold nights.
Without their presence, clients would be forced to
stay outside in the cold.
Thank you deeply on behalf of the most
vulnerable members of our community and the
people we serve!

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 25, 2015

CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
LONGMONT, COLORADO
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the tangled but fascinating history of penance
in the Church, the Irish “tariff” system helped us
survive the collapse of the old system of public
canonical penance and prepared the way for a new
system that emerged in the twelfth century. The old
form was unrepeatable, public, dealt with serious
community matters, and regulated by the bishops as
chief reconcilers. The new form had a more intimate
setting of penitent and confessor, was extremely
repeatable, and applied to everyone. The old
canonical form was closed to children, who were
hardly capable of the very grown up sins listed, or
their demanding remedies. The old form was
likewise closed to clerics, who were protected in a
sense by the very nature of the discipline.
In the new Irish form the penitent directly named
sins, or answered direct questions by the priest.
Sometimes, the penitent would recite a long formula
accusing him- or herself in a general way of all sorts
of sins, even from the distant past. Next, priest and
penitent together would lie prostrate before the altar
and recite several of the psalms with penitential
themes. Finally, the priest would pronounce a
judgment, deciding what form and duration the
penance should take, normally insisting that the
person return for reconciliation once the penances
were completed.

Prayer for Autumn
Heavenly Father,
you made not only the stars of the
heavens, but you made the seasons the
earth. In every autumn, there are endings and beginnings.
There is the end of vacations,
and the beginning of school.
Cool green leaves fall from their
branches, and become dappled
yellows, bright oranges and deep reds.
Help me, when things end that I wish
had continued, to see that in you, there
are no real
endings. In you, there are only changes, and new beginnings.
Give me the grace to know, that even
death itself is not the end,
but only a change from one
beautiful thing into another.
Amen.

card.

Meet Our New Bulletin Editor
Dear St. John’s Parishioners,
My name is Cindy Orona and I am your new
bulletin editor. My family and I have been parishioners
for more than 38 years. I am married with two children.
My son graduated from St. John’s last spring and my
daughter is currently in 5th grade. We love to volunteer
and my husband and I recently received our Eucharistic
Minister training. Our family affair doesn’t stop there;
my mother is a school cafeteria aide, and my niece and
nephew also attend St. John’s Catholic School.
I have more than twenty years of experience in
advertising, marketing, and public relations. My hobbies
are graphic design, tennis, and watching my children play
sports. I am honored and blessed to serve the church and
community of St. John’s, and I look forward to meeting
you soon. Please feel free to contact me at
[email protected].
Blessings to you,
Cindy Orona
