SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 24, 2016
A Word from
Our Pastor Fr. Ron Weissbeck
My dear family in Christ,
The gospel reading for this Sunday includes the
familiar prayer the Our Father. From the time that most
Catholics are quite young this is learned and prayed both
privately and publicly. The version that is given to us by
St. Luke begins with the simple “Father.” Addressing God
as Father is natural for Christians. Jesus introduced us to
this intimacy when he called God, A bba.
Calling God, Father, is much more than a way of
referring to God by another name, for example, Shepherd,
Lord, King, Savior. God was personal in being a part of
the whole tradition of the chosen people. God was
introduced as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; this
was a connection between these significant ancestors of the
people and the personal God who committed Himself to
them. The chosen people were the only ancient group that
was related to a personal God.
Imagine the reaction of the audiences when Jesus
started to talk about God not in the third person but as the
One whom he knew as an equal. We are so accustomed to
the way that Jesus referred to God that it is easy to
overlook that the way that he mentioned God as A bba was
unique. This is the basis for the prayer we say slowly,
unconsciously, race through and, at times, not even aware
of what is being said; it just rolls off the lips.
The Our Father is the fundamental Christian
prayer. Each of the phrases is worth a meditation and
receptivity that could change a life. I would like to suggest
that if you have never taken the time to ponder the
individual phrases, give yourself a gift and take the risk.
Spend some time with the word, Father; I will not tell you
how to proceed but let the Holy Spirit guide you. Next,
hallowed be your name and how often do I use the divine
name in surprise and/or anger? How do I hear, your
kingdom come? And now for the asking: give us each day
our daily bread, forgive us our sins, for we too forgive all
who do us wrong, and subject us not to the trial. This,
remember, is the Lukan version. It is more direct and
simple.
Continuing on the journey with Jesus as we learn
to be disciples, the Our Father is the basic structure of
inviting us to learn from Jesus who is our father, too.

So, I am back from my visit to the East Coast! I just spent
three amazing weeks at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean on
a little island off the coast of New Jersey. After a
wonderful time visiting with family and friends it is time
to get back to my calling, bringing the Catholic faith to
families.
What a wonderful first year I have had as Coordinator of
Catholic Religious Education at St. John the Baptist. It
was this week last year that I started at St. John’s in this
capacity and I thank God every day for all of these
blessings. Working with the parish families of St. John’s,
especially the children, has not been work at all for me. It
has brought me nothing but sheer happiness. I thank you
for sharing your families with me.

Now is the time to join the
exciting educational ministry
that brings women together to
pray, study, and learn.
Enjoy faith and fellowship.
Of Human Life (Humanae Vitae) - Fidelity is truly a
freedom! Lasting love in marriage is a joy! Children
are a blessing! Why is this controversial? In 1968,
Pope Paul VI issued this encyclical to clarify the value of
life and the sanctity of marriage, for then, as today, there
was much confusion in our culture around them. Come
discover how we as women can live these beautiful
teachings and bring them to our world.
Staring Monday, July 25th, 12:30-2:30, we
will meet weekly for 8-10 weeks and there is no
homework! Materials fee is $29. If you have questions,
please call Rebecca Williams at (303) 945-9894

St. John’s Food Bank and Outreach
By John Williams
It is that time of year again to prepare for our
children going back to school. As we have done for many
years in the past, we make every effort to ensure that the
children of our food bank clients have backpacks filled
with basic supplies to begin their school year. Many of
these families cannot afford to provide these necessary
items the students need to excel, and end up starting the
year unprepared for what lies ahead.
In many cases these children do not realize what
items they need, and often find out too late that they are
unequipped for success. This often leads to panic and puts
the child in an awkward position which can contribute to
insecurity and even disliking attending school.
St. John’s Food Bank which is already assisting
with nourishment to these children and their families tries
to give children the security it takes to prevent an
unsuccessful and traumatic school year.
Here is a list of the most common items
needed to aid in a successful school year:
Pens, pencils, wide ruled sheet paper, college ruled
sheet paper, binders, folders, composition notebooks,
washable markers and crayons, regular crayons,
colored pencils, school scissors, binder pouches, rulers,
basic calculators, glue sticks…AND MOST OF All…
BACKPACKS!!!
Please keep in mind that only Pre-K through 3rd
grade can use the smaller backpacks and prefer colorful
designs or bright colors. The remainder of the grades
prefers colored backpacks that can hold substantial more
books and supplies. Please look for great prices when
these items are on sale.
All donations may be placed
in the food bank bins in the north and
south lobbies of the church. Thanks
for your help in providing these
necessary supplies for the
children. God Bless you.

please call Sue Tornow at
303-772-2689. The Altar and Rosary Society is looking
for parishioners to provide a dish for funeral dinners. You
would need to drop off the dish in a disposable pan at
church by 10:00 a.m. on the day of the funeral. You
would be called at least 2 days before the funeral.

Hospital Stays and Holy Communion
Newly retired or looking for different volunteer
gigs? Consider joining St. John’s Altar and Rosary
When being admitted to the hospital
you are typically asked if you would
like a clergy visit. Please answer yes
in order for someone from the
Catholic Church to be able to bring
you Holy Communion, or pray with
you. It does not mean that you want
a priest to visit you. We have Eucharistic Ministers who
bring Communion to the hospital every day of the week.
If you are not asked about a visit from your church,
please let them know you would like a Communion visit.
Society. We meet the first Wednesday of each month to
pray the rosary together and have a meeting. Our group
cares for the flowers and church linens on the altar. We
take care of funeral dinners, the Mother/Daughter

looking for new members and we would love for you to
consider joining our group. For

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 24, 2016
EDUCACION RELIGIOSA
nadie quiere nuestro mal.
