From an early age, Gary had sought to better himself as a musician, and can now enjoy life as a solo pannist, keyboard player, drummer, composer, arranger, workshop co-ordinator and midi-programmer. As a music lover, Gary has endeavoured to induce a new breed of music lover to this instrument we all know as the steeldrum. He has been able to achieve this by means of live performances as a solo artist, producing recorded musical works and undertaking workshops in educational establishments reaching large sectors of the world's population. Gary found that people who liked a particular style of music would warm steeldrum when their favourite song was played on one, even when not musical style to which they were accustomed. By example, jazz has a huge following world wide, and yet so many jazz sit and listen for hours to steeldrums playing jazz standards in a non-jazz to the sound of the played in the same music lovers would form. The same can Gary Trotman be said for pop music lovers, Latin American music, or even world music. Hence examples on this release with rendition of selections such as 'My Way', 'Summertime', 'Tico Tico' and 'EI Cumbanchero'. Fusion of music styles are ever presently evident in Gary Trotman's Girl from Japan', 'Tropical Surprise' and 'Soca Salsa'. self-compositions 'The The recording technique itself is quite unique, with careful positioning of individual instruments within the stereo bandwidth, melody duplication/unison by means of exact phrasing one octave above the other. Studio effects were left out to let the natural sound of the steeldrums shine through. 'The opportunity to work again with Pablo Circamo was in itself an enlightening experience. Song selection, mood setting and standards in musicianship were foremost in my mind when asked to produce this Tropical Steeldrum Album. 1have opted for uniqueness in choosing songs never before recorded in these various styles, with the added flavour of many songs with wonderfully composed music movement. Fusion with Latin, Japanese, Caribbean and even Brazilian flavours, to produce something which I hope will be enjoyable, unique and special. I hope to be able to look back at this and be able to say, this was by no means just another Caribbean steeldrum recording. I very much hope that you have as much enjoyment out of listening, dancing and imagining, as I have had at ARC, of composing, arranging, playing and recording'. Gary Trotman, Steelasophical THE HISTORY OF THE STEEL BAND (As presented by Gary Trotman [SteeiasophicalJ) A drum was played by Columbus' men at the first sighting of Trinidad. The aboriginal Indians had also used the drum and tambourine to make music. When the African labour force replaced the Amerindians, the African drum in its various shapes, sizes and functions became the musical instrument for the labouring class. The East Indian labour force also brought their drums. Together, these were signs of the kind of music, which would have an influence on the cultural history of the island. With the abolition of slavery, the drum and the chac chac (small calabash rattle of Trinidad and Tobago) were used in carnival street processions. The drum was banned in 1883 and this left carnival with a very serious problem of finding a substitute instrument. Carnival was inconceivable without music. There was a long search for a type of music and musical instrument, which would be suited to the festival, to the culture of the people, and to their material and financial resources. That search was conducted in a social climate of hostility and repression. It was a search that ended with the invention of the steelband. The search went through many stages, with the introduction of string bands in the 1890's, to which was added a tambourine, clarinet, cornet and saxophone in 1920, followed by Tamboo Bamboo bands (percussion by hitting a long sugar cane stick with a short one). In 1930 these bands underwent a remarkable change - the transition to steel. The first 'Pan Man' was Winston 1946 he was capable of producing 'Spree' Simon. Spree had developed no less than fourteen separate notes. a Melody Pan and by In early days of the steel pan neither the arrangement of notes on the pans nor the composition of bands was standardised. One would encounter many varying names and a bewildering number of note layouts - comparable to asking a guitarist to playa guitar with the strings all mixed around. THE BASIC MODER STEELDRUM FAMILY: High Tenor, First Tenor, Low Tenor, Alto Tenor, Double Tenor, Single Tenor, Single Second, Double Second, Single Guitar, Double Guitar Pan, High Cello, 3 Pan Cello, 4 Pan Cello, Cello Tenor Bass, Tenor Bass, 6 Bass, 9 Bass, & 12 Bass. The steeldrum family of instruments is comprised of the same overlapping ranges as exist among the orchestral instruments within the same family (something like: violin, viola, cello, double bass). Nowadays, steelbands all over the world perform repertoire from calypso to popular music as well as the classics. Pan men are integrating with conventional musicians & within conventional bands too. It has often been said that no-one has yet defined the boundaries to which this instrument can be confined. Fact 1: The steeldrurn is the only instrument invented in this century. Fact 2: The first noted record of a performing band with a full complement of steeldrums covering the full orchestral range, was soon after the Second World War. CONSTRUCTION 7. Streets OF THE PAN It was back in the late 1930's that an ingenious Trinidadian discovered that by striking the top of an empry oil drum in different places, he could acrually produce varied musical pitches. Progressively, a careful process of sinking the 55 gallon oil drum into a concave shape, scribing the outline of the notes, grooving them, utilising a special chisel/punch applicator, tapping the underside of the drum carefully, raising a bit at a time until the tone and pitch desired are achieved. The drum is then placed in fire to further temper the steel, after which a complex runing process is undertaken. The notes must be in harmony with one another and together all the drums must harmonise and be in concert pitch. The drums are then finished in either paint or Nickel Chrome - and ready to be played! 1. Tropical Surprise Tropical sounding self-composition. Cool and calm to get you in the tropical mood. 2. Girl from Ipanema Instantly recognisable song. Wonderful melody and moving chord progressions. a lovely F9 chord that leans over nicely into the second change G7. 3. Summertime Recorded with the most relaxing feel ever. Gary visualised himself on a tropical in the sun, sand and cool breeze in order to create this particular music feel. Starts off with 4. How Insensitive composed 8. Perfidia A slow loving bolero. Just imagine yourself slow dancing on a hot sandy beach in the arms of the one you love. This song fearures tenor pan running solos with double tenor counter melodies. 9. Girl from Japan Composed as a tribute to one of the world's fastest growing music appreciators music. This song incorporates a Japanese feel introduction and bridge. of steeldrum 10. Besame Mucho An old time Latin American favourite love song, performed as an easy listening selection in the original key of D minor. This song is highly melodic and incorporates harmonies throughout its verse and chorus. Being written in a minor key with harmonic passages, this song adds to the feeling and message of love. 11. Valtatee beach taking This is the type of song that Gary loves to perform best. A song the lyrics of which have such powerful meanings, with music of such powerful movement in its progressions. Recorded in the original key of D minor ... what, what can you say, when a love affair is over? 5. Soca Salsa Caribbean Soca Music fused with a Salsa beat. Self composition recording. of London This song has an important meaning. It is the one place Gary visits regularly, which stimulates the longing for more tropical climes. In this song, Gary uses mis-phrasing, and purposely fools around with the melody. This has the effect of enticing and frustrating the listener into singing along. This is a technique Gary uses a lot in his live performances (only works if you know the words)! especially for this 6. Let it be Me A conscious effort was made to allow the full meaning of the words flow out of the melody. As such, this is a nice slow moving bolero. Power harmony incorporated after first verse. A break back into the traditional. This is an old time favourite well-known and loved folk song sung especially in schools. calypso from the Caribbean. A 12. I Have A Dream Tribute to Abba. In a soft gentle calypso tempo. Recorded in Bb. This recording has an interesting conga accompaniment. If you're singing along to this one, watch out for the surprise change at the end. 13. El Cumbanchero Like you have never heard it before! While the other Cumbancheros work all day, El Cumbanchero stays and plays ... with a lady in his arms ... this even has time to throw in a litde Reggae feel at the end. 14. Carnival Sunday Monday A real carnival atmospheric feel. Percussion solo, whistles, pulsating ion music jam. Self-composition produced for this album. rhythms and the old fash- 15. Hotel California Another first! Hotel California in calypso style. This incorporates the slow breaks as per original by The Eagles. A very interesting music piece performed in the key of Em with a chorus change into G Major. 16. No Matter What Slow bolero made a top ten hit by Irish chart toppers 'Boyzone'. 17. Tico Tico Popular song with Latino feel. Listen out for the Reggae strumming. 18. Bamboleo Inspiration to record this song came after listening to the famous Gypsy Kings. This was recorded with prominent melody, percussions and bass. Starts of in Fm and a key change at the end to the original key of Em. 19. Pan Solo A uniquely recorded song. It has just 2 cord changes, a merengue percussive beat, a Tenor pan solo and a Bass line in unison with the melody. A real partying calypso tune. 20. My Way Recorded with nice percussions, variation in chord selections which is closer to the original score than to the version made famous by Frank Sinatra. This song illustrates the point that this CD was uniquely recorded Gary's way! ::. GARY TROTMAN ::. 2.
