¿A
ave you ever noticed how
few Easter songs there are?
Easter defies being reduced
to chestnuts on an open fire or snow
and mistletoe and presents. Easter
demands bold proclamation: “This is the
day the Lord has made; let us rejoice
and be glad,” or simply that repeated
one-word anthem: “Alleluia, alleluia,
alleluia.” These are our Easter songs. Today begins the
fifty days of Easter, our longest celebration of the Church
year, a season given over to joyful, faith-filled songs. Each
reading gives us reason to rejoice. Peter provides the
Jesus story in a nutshell: from his baptism, through his
ministry, to his death and resurrection. Peter, who
strongly denied knowing Jesus, is now the bold witness to
the risen Lord Jesus as our Mediator of forgiveness. Paul
follows, possibly drawing on his days of Passover breadbaking, to call the fractious Corinthians—and us—to be a
“fresh batch of dough...the unleavened bread of sincerity
and truth.” Finally, the “beloved disciple,” that most
intuitive of believers, with Easter eyes, discerns
resurrection in a folded head-cloth, some scattered burial
clothing, and an empty tomb.

través de su ministerio, hasta su muerte y resurrección. Pedro,
quien negó rotundamente conocer a Jesús, es ahora el testigo
audaz del Señor resucitado como nuestro Mediador del
perdón. Después sigue Pablo, quien recordando sus días de

these meetings we will be planning on what homemade gifts
are needed to help make this year’s festival more successful.
