THE PATH TO FREEDOM
Most of us, if we were asked “Does the phrase ‘the
Ten Commandments’ appear in the Bible?” would likely
get it wrong, because the answer is “no.” “The Ten
Commandments” is a post-biblical, phrase that developed
along with an image of God as police officer that is not
found in today’s passage from Exodus.
The first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings us
out of slavery; following God’s law or commands is our
path to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove
from the temple were not explicitly breaking any of the
commandments, but neither were they helping people to
find God’s path to freedom as they came to worship at the
temple. This is an important Lenten lesson for us. We
need to stop asking ourselves whether or not we are
breaking specific rules or regulations and instead examine
our lives to see if we are truly following a path to God’s
freedom through Christ.

Praying that you had a good week. Today is the 3rd
Sunday of Lent. We are now at the midway point of Lent
then we will celebrate Jesus’ triumph in the
Resurrection. As we continue through this Lenten
let us continue reflecting on how we change our lives.
Perhaps it was doing something for others, giving up
some habit you think needs changing in your life, or
spending some time with our Lord. Whatever it was/is,
let us be mindful of the ultimate goal which is to make
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit
the center of our lives. Remember with God all things
are possible. However, all things are also in His time
not ours. Let us learn patience, perseverance of heart,
and above all show our love to other. Lent is a time for
reflection—reflecting on how we have been living our
lives, how have we been serving our Lord as well as
others!
In today’s first reading of Exodus, God delivers to
Moses the Ten Commandments. Perhaps we should
take time to reread this reading and reflect on how we
are truly living our lives. Are we living them according
to these Commandments, or are other things more
important than celebrating the Lord’s Day, or do we
bear false witness to our neighbor? The Lenten season
is also a time to come to Reconciliation. Why not use
the Ten Commandments as our measure for giving a
good confession so we can come to the table of the Lord
with a clean heart, mind, and soul.
In the second reading of St. Paul to the Corinthians,
Paul tells us that the Jews look for signs, and the Greeks
look for wisdom. However, as Christians, we proclaim
Christ crucified. He continues by telling us that Christ
crucified is a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to
Gentiles. He tells us that the foolishness of God is wiser
than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is
stronger than human strength. Let us reflect on times
when we did something foolish. What was it, why did we
choose to do it, was God in the midst of our decision?
In today’s Gospel, Jesus goes to the temple and finds
those that sold oxen, sheep, doves, as well as the money
changers. He takes a whip and begins to drive them out
of the temple and shouts at them saying “Take these out
of here, and stop making my Father’s house a
marketplace”. His disciples recalled the words of
Scripture “Zeal for your house will consume me”. The
Jews wanted a sign so they could believe, but his reply
was “destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it
up”. How often do we look for a sign from God to see if
He is listening to us?
As we continue through the week, let us look for the
signs that come from God… someone being given a
diagnosis that they have cancer, they ask for prayers
and we pray for that person, then the Doctor’s come
back to say “it wasn’t as bad as we first thought”. There
are many signs out there of God’s existence, we just
have to be still and listen and watch for them.
Have a Blessed week, Gloria Ybarra

MILITARY CORNER
Please pray for our men and women in the military and their
families. This week we want to recognize Petty Officer E3
Aaron Melia, grandson of Rosalie Melia. Aaron joined the
United States Navy after graduating from Waller High School
in 2008. He is presently serving on the USS Makin Island
(ihd8) an Amphibious assault ship currently stationed in San
Diego, CA. During the ship’s maiden deployment, the ship
made ports in Singapore, Bahrain, Jordan, Malaysia, Hong
Kong and Pearl Harbor, and Hawaii.
Please keep Aaron and his grandmother Rosalie in your
prayers this week. His picture will be in the Holy Family
entrance Saturday and Sunday and in the Corpus Christi
Room (Cry Room) during the week.
If you are a relative of someone in the military please send us
your updated status on military personnel.

The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their
family, friends, and faith community, it is often times the only way we
can help and support them.
Please remember names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called
in to the Parish Office by the person who is ill or by a member of their
family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether
they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if
they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be
asked for the correct spelling of the sick person’s name. If a family
member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The
name will be in the bulletin for four weeks.
