“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I
send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’
I said, ‘send me!’” (ISAIAH 6:8)
Every day – in little ways and in big ways – God asks,
“Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a
new ministry or just someone to open a door for a stranger,
God constantly provides doors of opportunity. The next
time you hear God calling, have the courage to walk
through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.”

A letter from our Pastor
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Jesus is spending time visiting Martha and Mary. It seems to be a brief vacation for Jesus. Martha is upset that Mary isn’t
helping her as she works to meet the needs of the guests. Rather, Mary is sitting at the foot of the Lord and listening intently to his
words. Martha reprimands Mary for what she sees as a lazy attitude on her part, but she also seems to be reprimanding Jesus for
allowing this woman to sit among the men when there is so much work to be done. Jesus’ response is shocking. He tells Martha
that “Mary has chosen the better part.” There is something so very unsettling about Jesus’ response to Martha. Aster all, she must
be exhausted from providing hospitality for her guests.
Jesus was spending a day of rest and refreshment with good friends, wasn’t he? I wonder if he was also presenting a lesson,
for them and also for us, that we all need quiet and restful time so that we can refresh both the body and the spirit.
Martha’s predicament is not so different from our experience each and every day in the year 2016 as we try to negotiate our
many responsibilities, tasks and activities, and to also find time for quiet relaxation. Even more than this, I think Jesus is reminding
us that we must also experience quiet time with the Lord! In our modern, fast-paced world, most of us tend to engage in multiple
actions and are “on the go” all the time. We arrange our lives to such a degree that even our vacations often center on work and
other obligations. How many summer barbecues are not just time to relax and enjoy ourselves, but rather arranged moments where
we can “get the deal done!”
Jesus and his followers have come to visit with Martha and Mary. As is the custom of the day, the host/hostess would be
responsible for providing hospitality to the guests. Food and drink would have to be arranged, water for the cleansing rituals would
have to be provided, comfortable recliners would have to be available so that the guests could relax in comfort. Providing true
hospitality was really a lot of work and responsibility! We have a vision of a woman running back and forth without a break to
make sure that her guests have everything they need, while her sister does nothing but sit and listen to Jesus. Deep down, we are a
little annoyed at Mary’s attitude, aren’t we? So, most of us, certainly initially, would take Martha’s side.
Jesus makes a startling response to Martha’s complaint. He says that Mary is “following the better way.” Martha had to
have been astounded, and so are we, if truth be told. “Doing nothing is better than providing hospitality???” This would be
unthinkable in Jesus day. But this is not really what Jesus is saying. Rather, Jesus is reminding his listeners, and us, that we all need
to take time away from our busy schedules to refresh ourselves. And not just a vacation. We also need to rest in the presence of the
Lord. Food for thought: we do take vacations, do we remember to take “retreat” days?
Today’s Gospel reminds me that I need to “retreat” to renew my spiritual self in the Lord. Jesus rested, and so must I. And so must
you!
Let us all remember to set aside some time each day to renew ourselves in the Lord!
In peace and prayer,
Fr. Pat

Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy
Speaking before the Angelus on July 21,
2013, Pope Francis spoke of today’s Gospel
in which Jesus visits the home of Martha
and Mary:
“…The passage today is that on Martha and Mary. Who are
these two women? Martha and Mary, sisters of Lazarus, are
the relatives and faithful disciples of the Lord, who lived in
Bethany. St Luke describes them in this way: Mary, at the
feet of Jesus, “listened to his teaching”, while Martha was
burdened with much serving (cf. Lk 10:39-40). Both
welcome the Lord on his brief visit, but they do so
differently. Mary sets herself at the feet of Jesus to listen but
Martha lets herself become absorbed in preparing everything,
and so much so that she says to Jesus: “Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help
me” (v. 40). And Jesus answers scolding her sweetly:
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many
things. There is need of only one thing” (v. 41).
What does Jesus mean? What is this one thing that we need?
First of all, it is important to understand that this is not about
two contradictory attitudes: listening to the word of the Lord,
contemplation, and practical service to our neighbor. These
are not two attitudes opposed to one another, but, on the
contrary, they are two essential aspects in our Christian life;
aspects that can never be separated, but are lived out in
profound unity and harmony. Why then was Martha scolded,
even if kindly, by Jesus? Because she considered only what
she was doing to be essential; she was too absorbed and
worried by the things “to do”. For a Christian, works of
service and charity are never detached from the principle of
all our action: that is, listening to the Word of the Lord, to be
— like Mary — at the feet of Jesus, with the attitude of a
disciple. And that is why Martha was scolded.
In our Christian life too, dear brothers and sisters, may prayer
and action always be deeply united. A prayer that does not
lead you to practical action for your brother — the poor, the
sick, those in need of help, a brother in difficulty — is a
sterile and incomplete prayer. But, in the same way, when
ecclesial service is attentive only to doing, things gain in
importance, functions, structures, and we forget the centrality
of Christ. When time is not set aside for dialogue with him in
prayer, we risk serving ourselves and not God present in our
needy brother and sister. St Benedict sums up the kind of life
that indicated for his monks in two words: ora et labora, pray
and work. It is from contemplation, from a strong friendship
with the Lord that the capacity is born in us to live and to
bring the love of God, his mercy, his tenderness, to others.
And also our work with brothers in need, our charitable
works of mercy, lead us to the Lord, because it is in the needy
brother and sister that we see the Lord himself.”
May we use this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to shape our
lives to be “Merciful like the Father.”
