Catholic School Education: How do we put a price tag on the value of a solid, faithbased, academically challenging Catholic education? Along with Holy Savior Academy, the Middlebrook Deanery School, the Diocese of Metuchen sponsors 24 Catholic elementary schools and four Catholic high schools. To learn more about Catholic schools and to find a complete listing of the Catholic schools in our diocese, please contact the Office of Schools of the Diocese of Metuchen at 732-562-2443 or [email protected]. A letter from our Pastor My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In 1 Corinthians 10:27 Saint Paul writes: “Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.” This is a powerful reflection on who we are as a part of the Body of Christ. We are invited to remember that every time we are present at Mass and come forward to share in Holy Eucharist, we affirm that we are part of the Body of Christ and that we do not live our faith in isolation. As we continue to examine who we are as Catholic believers and exactly what it is that we believe, we will take a look at the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist; we will consider who and what it is exactly that we celebrate when we participate in Mass. When we celebrate Mass we “remember” that the Eucharist is a “sacrificial meal” which makes present the cross and resurrection of Jesus. The Eucharist, then, is a memorial of Christ’s “Passover;” in other words, the work of salvation which Christ accomplished by his life, death and resurrection. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that the Eucharist is the “source and summit of Christian life. It is a “sacrificial meal” in which we, the worshipping community, commune personally with Jesus and become renewed in grace as we share in “food for the journey.” As Catholics, we are expected to attend Mass together each weekend. Certainly we are invited to participate at Mass even daily if our schedule permits. The Church refers to Mass as the “Eucharistic Celebration.” This “Celebration” always includes the proclamation and explanation of the Word of God, thanksgiving to God for the gift of His Son Jesus, and the consecration of the bread and wine into the Body and blood of Christ. Our full participation at Mass naturally includes our worthy reception of Holy Communion. Central to our understanding of Holy Eucharist is the truth of what we refer to as “transubstantiation.” As Catholics, we believe that during the consecration the priest who stands “In persona Christi” brings about the change from bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus Christ becomes truly present---“Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real and substantial manner: Body and Blood; soul and divinity.” (CCC: 1413). The faithful come forward to receive Holy Communion, and the “Sacred Species” that has not been consumed is reserved in the Tabernacle. As Catholics, we understand that Jesus becomes present during the consecration, and remains present under the form of bread and wine. Unfortunately today there are many Catholics who really do not have an adequate understanding of “transubstantiation” or the conversion of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus during the consecration at Mass. The Catholic Church has always consistently taught that through the power of the Holy Spirit, the priest, acting in the person of Jesus Christ, brings forth the Body and Blood of Christ under the form of bread and wine. Jesus Christ is, therefore, truly present in Holy Communion. We then refer to the “hosts” that are reserved in the Tabernacle as the “Real Presence,” that is the real presence of Jesus Christ who is with us always! At the end of her earthly life, the Mother of Christ was assumed body and soul to Heaven, that is to say, into the glory of eternal life, in full communion with God. Today’s page of the Gospel (Lk 1:39-56) presents to us Mary who, just after conceiving Jesus through the work of the Holy Spirit, goes to visit her elderly relative Elizabeth, who is also miraculously expecting a child. In this meeting filled with the Holy Spirit, Mary expresses her joy with the Canticle of the Magnificat, because she has become fully aware of the meaning of the great things that are being accomplished in her life: through her, all that her people were expecting is brought to fulfillment. But the Gospel also shows us the truest cause of Mary’s greatness and her blessedness: the cause is faith. Indeed, Elizabeth greets her with these words: “blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord” (Lk 1:45). Faith is the heart of Mary’s whole story: she is the believer, the great believer; she knows — and she says so — that historically the violence of the powerful, the pride of the rich, the arrogance of the proud are burdensome. However, Mary believes and proclaims that God does not leave his humble and poor children alone, but helps them with mercy, with care, overthrowing the mighty from their thrones, scattering the proud in the machinations of their hearts. This is the faith of our Mother, this is the faith of Mary! The Canticle of Our Lady also enables us to grasp the full meaning of Mary’s life: as the mercy of the Lord is the driving force of history, then she could not “know the corruption of the sepulchre, she who begot the Lord of life” (cf. Preface). All this is not only about Mary. The “great things” done in her by the Almighty touch us deeply, speak to us of our journey in life, remind us of the destination that awaits us: our Father’s house. Our life, seen in the light of Mary assumed into Heaven, is not a meaningless wandering, but is a pilgrimage which, while with all its uncertainty and suffering, has a sure destination: our Father’s house, who awaits us with love. It is beautiful to consider this: that we have a Father who waits for us with love, and that our Mother Mary is also up there and waiting for us with love. Meanwhile, as life goes by, God makes shine “for his pilgrim people on earth, a sign of comfort and sure hope” (cf. ibid.). That sign has a face, that sign has a name: the luminous face of the Mother of the Lord, the blessed name of Mary, full of grace, for she believed in the word of the Lord: the great believer! As members of the Church, we are destined to share our Mother’s glory, because, thanks be to God, we too believe in Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross and, through Baptism, we were incorporated into that mystery of salvation.” May we use this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to shape our lives to be “Merciful like the Father.” HOW DOES ONE BECOME A FULLY INIATED MEMBER OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH? The Church uses a pastoral process for initiating new members into the church, forming them into Disciples of Christ. The process, referred to as RCIA, is more than a welcome; it is an invitation to undertake a spiritual journey that is focused on Jesus Christ and His Kingdom of salvation, love, justice and mercy. Jesus remind us that his Kingdom is already in our midst, and as His disciples we are asked to assist Him in bringing it to its fullness. Jesus A to Z 15 Dellwood Lane Somerset, NJ 08873 732-545-4200 Michael O’Neill McGrath, OSFS www.saintpetershcs.com/mccarrick A colorful Catholic ABC book for kids and families!
