We have begun the second semester focusing in the
school wide literacy goal. Reading is being promoted in
a variety of ways; one of them is by having the book fair
this week. All students and parents had access to great
variety of books in English or Spanish, ranging from
picture books to series. A favorite book among
elementary children was: Diary of a whimpy kid “The
ugly Truth” by Jess Kinney. This week we all took part of
D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) time. Every day,
we devoted 15 minutes to quiet reading of our favorite
book; Manuelito enjoyed “Arrancame la vida” de
Ángeles Mastretta while Mr. Makhlouf read “The first
six weeks of school” by Paula Dentor and Roxann
Kriete.
Hemos iniciado el segundo semestre enfocándonos en la
meta escolar, la lectura. La lectura se está promoviendo con
diferentes actividades, una de ellas es a través de la Feria del
Libro. Todos los alumnos y padres de familia tuvimos acceso
a una gran variedad de libros en inglés o en español,
empezando por libros con imágenes para los pequeñitos
hasta libros de series. Uno de los libros favoritos entre
nuestros alumnos es el de: Diary of a whimpy kid “The
ugly Truth” por Jess Kinney. Esta semana todos tomamos
parte del tiempo para D.E.A.R. (Deja todo y lee). Cada día
dedicamos quince minutos a la lectura en silencio de nuestro

The Spanish Program teachers recorded their students’
fluency reading in one minute. Ask your child how
many words he/she was able to read. To find out the
grade level range, visit www.sep.gob.mx in Estandares
Nacionales de Habilidad Lectora. If your child reads on
grade level, motivate him/her to keep reading on a
regular basis. If your child reads below grade level,
encourage him/her to practice oral reading at home on
a regular basis. Children who read at grade level have
more opportunities to understand any reading
selection, enabling them to succeed academically.
Los maestros del Programa de Español, tomaron la lectura de
rapidez de sus alumnos. Pregunte a su hijo(a) cuantas
palabras leyó en un minuto. Para conocer el promedio de
palabras por grado escolar, visite la página www.sep.gob.mx
en Estándares Nacionales de Habilidad Lectora. Si su hijo(a),
lee a nivel de grado, motívelo para que siga leyendo
regularmente. Si su hijo(a) no lee a nivel de grado, pídale que
practique la lectura oral en casa de manera frecuente. Los
niños que leen a nivel de grado, tienen mas oportunidades
de comprender cualquier tipo de lectura, permitiéndoles
sobresalir académicamente.
The elementary library is still open on Thursdays and
Fridays from 7:15 to 7:40 a.m. for all students to quietly
enjoy a book or to share it with a friend. Children are
encouraged to take their school supplies to the
classroom first, then go to the library. Ms. Carissa
stamps their hand on their way out, this way teachers
do not mark them as tardy.

On Monday, January 31st during the flag assembly in
the elementary gym at 8:00 a.m., we will hand out
certificates to those students who achieved the First
Semester Honor Roll. Parents are cordially invited to
this event.

 Once again our CAT community showed their
kindness and generosity by supporting us with
the different collections we had in December.

 The girls in the orphanage home are very
grateful to our students for their contributions
which were used to but two school uniform
shirts for each of them and groceries for all.

this initiative and to the Menchaca Rivera family
for accomplishing it.

How fast time goes by! We are already in the
second semester and we need to do our best
effort for the ENLACE evaluation, which is
scheduled for May. We have planned the
following activities to reinforce topics:

We invite all sixth grade parents to support us at
home by being aware of homework assignments and
practice assignments in all the Spanish Program
subjects. We are getting ready for a national
evaluation called, Olimpiada del Conocimiento
Infantil. It will be on February 23rd and it will be
applied in school. Also, our students continue with
daily preparation for the national evaluation
ENLACE, which will be applied in the last week of
May. During the Easter break, students will take
home practice worksheets on the subjects of
Spanish, Math, and Geography. Please make plans in
advance so your child comes to school on those
days. Grades will count for the school’s average and
for the students’ report card.

Sixth grade is kicking off our Canada unit. Students
will be exploring Canada through
cultural, historical, political, and
geographical
perspectives
throughout the month of January.
After studying Canada as a whole
group, students will then use those tools
to
explore a country of their choice and
demonstrate their knowledge through a live
presentation. Reading comprehension, as a result, is
going to focus on nonfiction texts and alternate
resources such as atlases, maps, interviews, and
electronic media. Spelling and vocabulary
throughout this quarter will be focused on
facilitating these independent research skills.
Students will be trained to recognize key phrases
and clue words in math, social studies, and reading.

December 4 and 5 in which both volunteer
students and teachers worked a lot. Thanks

During December Jr Stuco was in charge
of the annual food drive for the
maintenance staff here at CAT. All of the

together to collect various items to help
keep this tradition alive.

Personal Hygiene Campaign

The Infirmary Department will be
working in a Personal Hygiene Campaign
with Early childhood and elementary
students. During this campaign children
will be checked if their ears are clean,
short nails and appropriate hair cut.
