Financial Realities and Stewardship To date the Regular Christmas Collection stands at $66,205.00 We thank you for your generosity. The Sunday collection for January 26/27 was $ 6,399.00 Pastor’s Letter Life in the Quiet Season Good News and Challenges February 2/3 I can’t say you didn’t warn me! I arrived here in July just in time for the heat, happiness, and amazing busyness of summer. I enjoyed walking through the crowds of visitors lingering on Main Street both day and night and the extra crowds filling our church. And you regulars warned me. Wait till the winter — it gets awfully quiet. Yes the quiet season is here, the visitors are scarce, many who can are heading south for a bit of warmth. It’s hard to blame them. But I am loving this time of year! First of all, I like seasons. I am a little less tolerant of snow and cold than I was when I was a kid waiting for the ponds to freeze so I could play Hockey. But I enjoy change and it has its positive side. I loved walking through town before Christmas with all those beautiful lights on streets now quiet and peaceful. I have found that this is a great time to get to know people when the pace and activity is just a bit slower. It is a good time to plan and think about the future. I also wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for your renewed sense of generosity to Sacred Hearts. I felt that it was important in the Fall to place some challenges before the community — especially in regard to stewardship. I am encouraged that you received this message in such a positive way and that you are truly doing your best to support this community. Our Christmas collection was remarkable — the total now stands at $66,205. Weekly collections have also showed some improvement but this the quiet time of year and attendance is about half of what it is on a busy summer weekend. Pastors do worry about these things. The reality of a $5,000 fuel delivery, about a month for all three buildings, hits home. It means that almost a whole collection a month is just for heat. I would like to only talk about spiritual things with you but of course the practical is the spiritual, and it is out of our love for our community and its ministries that you chose to make the sacrifices that make faith a reality. Please keep up the good work. Keep us in mind if you are fortunate to be able t spend time in a warmer place. If storms or weather keep you home on a weekend remember that we still need your assistance each week. All in all it’s a great time of year! Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano Monday February 4th at 7:30 PM Why Catholics Like Einstein and Need not be Afraid of Darwin George Sim Johnston The supposed conflict between science and religion is a staple of modern discourse. But does this conflict really exist? We shall take a look at Darwin's theory of evolution and the question of human origins; modern cosmology; the Galileo affair (which history books still treat as the definitive parting of ways between science and religion); and suggest ways of reading the creation account in the Book of Genesis. The talk will take a cue from the 17th century philosopher Francis Bacon: A little science can lead us away from God, while a fuller understanding of it leads us back again. Healthy You! Please Don’t Forget Us No doubt this is a great time to get away to warmer places for the winter or even just a few weeks. Please remember that your parish is alive and active all year round, and that these are some of the most expensive months for us! In winter our fuel bills alone are over $5,000 a month — that is almost one whole collection just for heat. So please don’t forget us when you are gone. Keeping up a weekly pattern of support will keep our parish financially healthy. Enjoy your time away and remember that you can read our weekly bulletin at www.shjmbasilica.org Stewardship in Action — Jim Frankenbach Do you have a business or skill that can help SHJM? As we begin the 2013 Calendar year, I hope that you join with me in praying that the work of our Church will continue to thrive and expand as we Serve God by Serving Others. I am very grateful for your support of our Church, and I am delighted to be able to share with you that last year because of the Catholic Ministries Appeal our critical ministries were able to assist more than 600,000 people in our community. Your generosity helped us: support the formation of our priests and deacons who give their lives to the Church. provide religious education to more than 110,000 of our youngsters in public schools. provide food, shelter and care to the disadvantaged in our communities through the good works of Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach programs. Last year, we provided assistance to thousands of families who were displaced due to Hurricane Sandy. form future generation of Catholics through Campus Ministry, Young Adult and Youth Ministry programs. During this time which the Holy Father has named the Year of Faith, we are all called as Catholics to rediscover, and share with others, the precious gift of Faith, and to let this special time be an opportunity for each one of us to intensify the witness of charity, which is faith in action. Your service to the Church helps demonstrate your faith in action as does your support of all of the critical work of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. This commitment encourages me to once again come to you and ask for your leadership participation in the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Whatever size your gift is, please know that it is deeply appreciated and will help us continue to join together to serve God by serving others. Supporting the Catholic Ministries Appeal is an opportunity for us to Belong More Deeply to the Lord, the Church and to one another. With my gratitude and prayers, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre For more information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal, to view the video, or to donate, please visit www.CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org or call 516-379-5210 ext. 2. By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y Canción 2013 © 2012, OCP.
