Pastor’s Letter
May 11/12 Mothers Day
Susan’s New Car
Dear Parish Family,
Not too many years ago I was teaching a course in our Pastoral Formation Institute, entitled Living
the Christian Life, the course was about morality and especially about living as Jesus taught us. One
spring I had a particularly enjoyable class. Everyone seemed to work together very well and after the
last session my students invited me to join them at a local diner for lunch to celebrate. As we left and
were saying our goodbyes Susan, a young woman with a bunch of middle school kids, pointed out her
new car. It was nice and red and shiny except for the roof which was kind of a pale pink with a dull
finish. I remarked that it was beautiful and that I didn’t know they still made two tone cars. Susan
laughed. She said there was a story behind the pink roof.
She explained that she had parked the car in her driveway under a flowering tree. One night, the
tree deposited an explosion of pollen and sap all over the car. Her kids were up early. They saw the
mess and decided to give their mom a special present. They would wash the car. The usual bucket,
soap, and sponge came out but the sap and pollen proved especially sticky. Rather than give up, they
decided to use something stronger. They decided to use Brillo! They scoured and scoured. The sap and
pollen came off. So did the paint.
I could imagine the scene. It was hard to imagine how any parent could keep their cool. Susan
explained. “I was not happy about the car! But I teach my kids how to be thoughtful and generous and
they were trying to do a good thing. If I showed them that I was angry it would have ruined their
thoughtful intentions.” People like Susan amaze me.
They say that our moms make great sacrifices for us, their children. My mind goes to the obvious:
cooking endless meals, working extra jobs, cleaning our bottoms, and sitting up through our feverish
nights. We probably don’t know the half of it! Moms take our mini childhood tragedies seriously,
worry with us through the fears and anxieties of growing up, hold lots of things inside for our good,
and are grateful for a car cleaned with Brillo.
Today is a day to be grateful for all those wonderful women in our lives who love us in ways we
know and in ways beyond our knowing. They hold our love
and our secrets in their hearts.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano
Pastor

Parish and Community Life
SAVE THE DATE!
Summer is Coming - Get That Tent Ready
There is nothing like the first warm day of spring to turn our thoughts to the return of summer! This
year we will have something very special to look forward to: the return of the Sacred Heart End of
Summer Tent Party! I have heard so much about this historic SHJM event and I am delighted that
Pat Corrigan and Joan Heinz have graciously offered to chair the party. This year our party will
honor Mary Steinbrecher, one of the party’s most enthusiastic supporters over many years. Mary
passed away this past fall but not before encouraging all of us to renew this event as a way for the
parish and community to come together and celebrate our wonderful parish and the joys of summer
in Southampton.
August 31st for our Summer Party under the Tent.
COMING SOON! SHJM’S NEW SUPER RAFFLE
On Memorial Day Weekend ticket sales will begin for Sacred Hearts New and Improved Super
Raffle. This year we will be selling even more tickets—up to 500 will be sold so we won’t run out
and you won’t be disappointed!
But even better we will be offering even more prizes, 10 in all, so your chances of being a big
winner will now be 1 in 50 instead of 1 in 200 as in the past.
Tickets will still be $100 and you can purchase them on you own or take a chance or chances with a
group of friends to increase your chances of winning.
Anyone wishing to join the committee in selling chances before and after Mass to please contact:
Charlie Mottern—631-283-3785. We especially need some volunteers for the 5 PM Masses on
Saturday and Sunday.

In Sympathy
Our parish mourns the passing of Peter Gambino, longtime parishioner and owner of the Baby Moon
Restaurant in Westhampton. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Basilica of Sacred
Hearts of Jesus & Mary on Friday, May 3rd and burial followed in Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary
Cemetery. Our sympathies go out to his wife, Salvatrice, his daughters, Paola, Marina, & Jackie,
his family and friends.
Memorial Day Mass
Come celebrate with us at 9 AM on Memorial Day to honor our veterans, past &
present. The Mass will be in the Basilica this year. We invite all Scouts, veteran
groups, current service men & women and their families to join us. There will be
bagels, coffee & juice after the Mass provided by the Knights of Columbus. We
can then join the ceremonies in the village.
On May 13th, we invite all to take part in a decade of the Rosary. You can come to 12
Noon Mass that day and we will recite the Rosary after Mass or say it wherever you
are—home, work, etc.
Join our new Parish Prayer Group—the Choose Life Prayer Group—joining is easy—
no meetings, no dues, only promise to pray a decade of the Rosary everyday. For more
information please contact Peg Jordan, 283-5886.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED AT SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY. REGISTRATION
FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE PARISH OFFICE AT 283-0097.
Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want
him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they
are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School.
Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website:

Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for
the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a
good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on
Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious
Education in our community.

EDUCATION
Catholic elementary education is alive and well in Southampton! Our Lady of the Hamptons School continues to grow
and develop outstanding academic, athletic and fine arts programs for students in pre-school through grade 8. Having
completed the gymnasium section of the newly constructed Wellness Center, the school is actively seeking investors
and donors to help with the completion of the classroom wing of the new Wellness Center. Information about
memorial opportunities available. Tours of the new building can be easily arranged.
You can make a difference in the lives of those around us
by making a gift to this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal
Every Gift Counts!
A gift of $25 may help pay the gas for a Meals On Wheels van to deliver food for a day.
Catholic Ministries Appeal
A gift of $50 from an emergency fund may help pay the electric bill in a cold winter
month for a family in need.
A gift of $100 may help care for a newborn infant in Catholic Charities Regina
Residence.
Because of you, every year we are able to serve more than 600,000 people
in our Long Island Community. This support enables our children to
continue to receive the gift of spiritual formation, sacramental
preparation, and quality education. It allows seminarians and lay leaders
to fulfill their calling to serve the community. With your support
Catholic Charities can maintain its services for the poor and
disadvantaged, and we can continue to reach out to our young people and
others to find the best ways to guide and pass on our faith from
generation to generation.
Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone’s life. Thank you!

mejorarlo. By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y Canción 2013 © 2012, OCP.
