Notas: Fue visto por primera vez en Punta Norte
en el año 1975 siendo aún un juvenil, lo cual
ubica su nacimiento alrededor del año 1960.
Suele varar sobre la playa para capturar crías de
lobo marino. En la actualidad (2011) es el único
macho exhibe este comportamiento. Se le han
observado heridas abiertas en las mandíbulas, así
como cicatrices blancuzcas una vez sanadas esas
heridas. Mel posee una pequeña muesca en cada
uno de los extremos de la cola. Desde 2006 se lo
suele ver en compañía de “Sol” (PTN-014).
Notes: First observed at Punta Norte in 1975
when he was a young adult male. This therefore
suggests he was born in approximately 1960. He
often beach hunts for sea lion pups and is currently
(2011) the only adult male to do this. Mel has been
observed with open wounds on his jaws and
distinctive white scaring when the wounds have
healed. He has a small notch in each of his tail
flukes. Since 2006 Mel is usually found with the
orca known as Sol (PTN-014).

Notas: A Jazmín se la ve en Punta Norte desde
comienzos de la década del’ 90. Tuvo una cría en
el año 2005 y otra en el 2008. A ninguna se la ha
visto desde el 2009. En abril del 2011 se la observó
con una nueva cría. Jazmín es una cazadora
eximia y a menudo vara sobre la playa para
capturar crías de lobo marino. Anteriormente
presentaba una doble muesca en el extremo
derecho de la cola, sin embargo, a partir del año
2010 posee una muesca simple.
Notes: Has been observed at Punta Norte since
the early 1990’s. Jazmin had a alf in 2005 and in
2008, both of which have not been seen since
2009 (and therefore assumed to be dead). She
was observed with a new calf in April 2011 (PTN
022). Jazmin is a very proficient hunter, often
seen intentionally stranding on the beach to take
sea lion pups. She had a double notch in her right
tail fluke, which as of 2010 became a single notch.

cría de lobo marino. Esta documentación confirma
que es la octava orca en el Catálogo de
Foto-Identificación que vara intencionalmente
para cazar. En 2004, cuando PNOR comenzó el
seguimiento de estas orcas, Lea era un juvenil
visto en compañía de Jazmín.
Notes: In March 2008 Lea was photographed
stranding and capturing a pup on the beach for
the first time. This documentation confirms her
as the eighth orca in the PNOR Photo Identification
Catalogue to come ashore intentionally stranding
to hunt. In 2004 when PNOR started documenting
these orca, Lea was a juvenile, and seen in the
company of Jazmin (PTN-002). Note the small
notch at the base of this orca’s dorsal fin. Lea has
been observed hunting juvenile elephant seals
inside the Caleta Valdés. Lea was named in
October 2006 by the school children of the
Escuela 87 de Puerto Piramides, Peninsula Valdes.

Notas: Esta hembra adulta es una cazadora excelente.
Habitualmente caza en compañía de Valen (PTN-009)
capturando crías de lobo marino que avanzan en grupo
por la rompiente. Maga tiene una cría llamada Issy
(PTN-016) nacida presumiblemente en julio de 2007 a
la que no se la ha vuelto a ver. Ahora se la ve con una
nueva cría.
Notes: This adult female is a very proficient
hunter and typically hunts with Valen (PTN-009)
and they often take sea lion pups when they are
in pairs at the waters edge. Maga has a calf, Issy
(PTN-016), presumed to be born in July of 2007
that has never been seen again. Nowadays she
has a new calf.

Notas: Ishtar significa “estrella” y era la Diosa de
Babilonia del amor y fertilidad. En 1990 Ishtar
quedó varada durante cinco horas sobre la restinga frente a la Reserva de Punta del Norte. El
guardafauna de entonces la mantuvo mojada y la
salvó. Es una cazadora eximia. Tuvo una cría, Pao
(PTN-006), vista por primera vez en marzo de
2005, y otra llamada Shekei (PTN-018) observada
por primera vez en marzo de 2008. Llen (PTN010) ha sido visto a menudo en compañía de
Ishtar.
Notes: Ishtar means “star” and is derived from
the Babylonian for Goddess of Love & Fertility.
In 1990 Ishtar was stranded on the reef in front
of the Punta Norte reserve, for five hours. She
was kept wet and rescued by the Guardafauna
(Fauna Rangers).
She is a very proficient
hunter. Ishtar had a calf first sighted in March
2005, Pao (PTN-006) and another, Shekei
(PTN-018), first sighted in March 2008. Llen
(PTN- 010) is often seen with Ishtar.

Notas: Nacida en marzo de 2005, esta orca es hija
de Ishtar (PTN-005). Se le ha observado varando
junto a su madre durante la caza. Pao tiene un
hermano/a Shekei (PTN-018) que fue avistado/a
por primera vez en marzo de 2008. A Pao se lo
observó varado intencionalmente para capturar
una cría de lobo marino en marzo de 2011,
convirtiéndose así en la décima orca del
catálogo PNOR que vara intencionalmente para
cazar. Pao está habitualmente en compañía de
Llen (PTN- 010). Recibió su nombre en octubre
de 2006 de los alumnos de la Escuela 87 de
Puerto Pirámides, Península Vadés. Pao posee
una pequeña muesca en su aleta dorsal.
Notes: Born in March 2005, Pao’s mother is Ishtar
(PTN-005). Pao has been observed coming to the
beach with his mother when she is hunting. Pao
has a brother/sister, Shekei (PTN- 018), which was
first sighted in March 2008. Pao was first observed
to intentionally strand to capture a sea lion pup in
March 2011, making him the tenth orca in the
PNOR catalogue to intentionaly strand to hunt.
Pao consistently travels Llen (PTN- 010). Pao was
named in October 2006 by the school children of
the Escuela 87 de Puerto Piramides, Peninsula
Valdes. Pao has a small notch on his dorsal.

do not know if Mela is a male or female. His/her
mother is Jazmin (PTN-002). Mela has a
brother, Pash (PTN-017), first sighted in March
2008. Mela was named in October 2006 by the

Piramides, Peninsula Valdes. He/she has not
been observed since 2009.

Notas: Se presume que Mica nació en el año
2004 y que su madre es Maga (PTN- 004). Se
desconoce si Mica es macho o hembra. En el
2011 se le vio entrenando con una cría de lobo
marino en zona de rompiente. Si bien las orcas
peque˜ãs suelen acompañar a su madre durante
la caza, convertirse en varadora exitosa lleva
años de práctica, y muchas nunca logran la
excelencia. A Mica se le ha visto a menudo en
compañía de Maga (PTN-004) y Valen (PTN-009).
Mica fue bautizada/o en octubre de 2006 por los
alumnos de la Escuela 87 de Puerto Pirámides,
Península Vadés.
Notes: Mica is estimated to be born in 2004,
presumably to Maga (PTN- 004). We do not
know if Mica is a male or female. In 2011, Mica was
observed training wit a sea lion pup in the surf
zone. Although young calves may accompany
their mothers during their hunting forays it still
takes years of practice to become a successful
‘standing hunter’ and some orca never achieve
proficiency. Mica has always been observed with
Maga (PTN-004) and Valen (PTN-009). Mica
was named in October 2006 by the school
children of the Escuela 87 de Puerto Piramides,
Peninsula Valdes.

Notas: Su nombre obedece a una cicatriz muy
distintiva en su montura del lado izquierdo.
Desconocemos si Llen es macho o hembra. Se lo
observó varar y capturar a una cría de lobo marino
en marzo de 2011, siendo así la novena orca del
catálogo PNOR que vara intencionalmente para
cazar. Llen fue bautizado/a en octubre de 2006 por
los alumnos de la Escuela 87 de Puerto Pirámides,
Península Vadés.
Notes: The name Llen originates from a distinctive
white scar on the left saddle patch of this orca. We do
not know if Llen is a male or female. He/she was first
observed to successfully strand and capture a sealion
pup in March 2011, making him/her the ninth orca in
the PNOR catalogue to intentionally strand to hunt.
Llen was named in October 2006 by the school
children of the Escuela 87 de Puerto Piramides,
Peninsula Valdes.

Notas: A este macho, que supuestamente nació en
1989, se lo suele observar en compañía de Antu
(PTN-012), quien es una muy buena cazadora.
Habitualmente Antu captura crías de lobo marino
y se las alcanza a JC. Lleva su nombre en honor a
Juan Carlos López, un investigador de orcas que
trabajó con estos animales en los años ‘70 y ’80. JC
presenta una notoria muesca en forma de V en el
extremo derecho de la cola.
Notes: This adult male (estimated to be born in
1989), is typically seen in association with Antu
(PTN-012) who is a good hunter. Antu will often
capture sea lion pups and take them to JC. He is
named after Juan-Carlos Lopez, an orca researcher
who worked with the animals at Punta Norte in the
1970’s & 80’s.

Notas: Antu significa “sol” en lengua mapuche (una
tribu de Patagonia). Es una excelente cazadora que
suele capturar crías de lobo marino para JC (PTN-011).
Se presume que esta orca es una hembra, dado que
su aleta dorsal no se ha enderezado (crecido en
altura) desde que fuera fotografiada por primera vez
en el año 2000 por un miembro del equipo de
PNOR. Es posible que JC sea el hijo de Antu, e
incluso que posee una muesca en forma de V en el
extremo derecho de la cola.
Notes: Antu means “sun” in the Mapuche (a tribe
from Southern Argentina) language. She is a very
proficient hunter who often catches pups for JC
(PTN-011). This orca is presumed to be a female,
given that it’s dorsal fin has not ‘sprouted’ (grown
tall) since it was first photographed as an adult in
2000 by a member of the PNOR team. It is possible
that JC (PTN-011) is Antu’s son, and he may also be
her last calf as we have nor observed her with a calf
PNOR started documenting the orca in 2004.

Notas: A Sol, cuyo nombre significa “sol” en
castellano, se le vio en Punta Norte por primera
vez en marzo de 2006. Entre marzo de 2006 y
marzo de 2011 se la ha visto en compañía de
Mel (PTN-001), quien caza y trae el alimento
para ambos. A Mel se le vio intentando enseñar
a Sol la técnica del varamiento intencional, sin
embargo nunca vimos a Sol varar. Sol fue
bautizada/o en octubre de 2006 por los
alumnos de la Escuela 87 de Puerto Pirámides,
Península Valdés.

know if Sol is male or female. Between March 2006
and March 2011 Sol was observed traveling with
Mel (PTN-001) who hunts and brings food for
them both. Mel was seen trying to teach Sol the
stranding technique, but she was never seen
stranding. Sol was named in October 2006 by the

begin a series of attacks followed by other orca, such
as Maga (PTN-004) and Valen (PTN-009). The tip of
her left tail fluke is damaged. Lola was named in
October 2006 by the school children of the Escuela
87 de Puerto Piramides, Peninsula Valdes. She has
not been observed since 2008.

La madre de Issy es Maga (PTN- 004). Se
desconoce aún si Iss es hembra o macho. En
marzo 2011 se le observó junto a Maga (PTN- 004)
en zona de rompiente durante la caza, pero aún no
se le ha visto varando para cazar. La guardafauna
Isabel Peinecura fue la primera persona en avistar
esta cría en Punta Norte. Los alumnos de la escuela
214 de El Riacho San José en Península Valdés le
dieron este nombre en honor a Isabel el 3 de marzo
de 2008. No se ha visto a Issy desde 2010.
Notes: Presumed to be born in July of 2007. Issy’s
mother is Maga (PTN-004). We do not know if
Issy is a male or female. In March 2011, Issy was
occasionally seen coming to the beach during
hunting, with Maga (PTN- 004), but has yet to be
seen intentionally stranding to hunt. The Fauna
Ranger Isabel Peinecura first sighted this calf at
Punta Norte. The school children of Escuela 214
Riacho San Jose, Peninsula Valdes named this calf in
honor of Isabel, on March 3, 2008. Issy hasn’t been
seen since 2010.

Notas: Pash, que significa “despertar” en lengua
Tehuelche o Aoniken tribu del sur de Argentina fue
vista en Punta Norte por primera vez en marzo de
2008. Su madre es Jazmím (PTN-002). Fotografías
tomadas en marzo de 2008 que muestran el vientre
de Pash fueron enviadas a cuatro científicos especializados en orcas para determinar su sexo. Los
cuatro científicos coinciden en que Pash es un
macho. Pash fue bautizada en diciembre de 2008
por los alumnos de la Escuela 214 de El Riacho San
José en Península Valdés. No se ha visto a Pash
desde el 2009.
Notes: Pash, which means “awakening” in the language
of the Tehuelche (Aoniken) Tribe from Southern
Argentina, was first sighted at Punta Norte in March
of 2008. Photographs showing the underbelly of
Pash, in March of 2008, were sent to four orca
scientists around the world, in order to establish
the sex, and all agree Pash is a male. Pash’s mother
is Jazmin (PTN-002). Pash was named in December
2008 by the school children of Escuela 214 Riacho San
Jose, Peninsula Valdes. Pash hasn’t been seen since
2009.

visto (PTN-021). Shekei fue bautizada/o en Diciembre
de 2008 por los alumnos de la Escuela 214 de El
Riacho San José en Península Valdés.
Notes: Shekei, which means “jewel” in the language
of the Tehuelche (Aoniken) Tribe from Southern
Argentina, was first sighted at Punta Norte in March
of 2008, and therefore was presumed to be born
between January and February 2008. We do not
know if Sheike is a male or female. Shekei’s mother
is Ishtar (PTN-005). In October 2010, Shekei was
observed traveling with Llen (PTN- 010), Pao (PTN006), Lea (PTN- 003 and a ‘new’ sub-adult male
(PTN-021). Shekei was named in December 2008
by the school children of Escuela 214 Riacho San
Jose, Peninsula Valdes.

Basados en el tamaño de su aleta dorsal cuando fue
fotografiado en 2010, estimamos su nacimiento
alrededor de 1998. Se le ha visto realizando varamientos a partir de 2012. Jaluel fue bautizado en 2012
por los alumnos de la Escuela 214 de El Riacho San
José en Península Valdés. Jaluel significa “tigre” en
lengua Tehuelche (Aoniken), tribu del sur de
Argentina.
Notes: A previously un-cataloged, sub-adult male
was first observed in Punta Norte in October 2010
travelling with Lea (PTN-003), Llen (PTN-010), Pao
(PTN- 006), Shekei (PTN-018). Based on the size of
his dorsal fin when first photographed in 2010, we
estimate he was born approximately in 1998. He as
been observed stranding since 2012. Jaluel was
named in May 2012 by the school children of
Escuela 214 Riacho San Jose, Peninsula Valdes.
Jaluel means “tiger” in the language of the
Tehuelche (Aoniken) Tribe from south Argentina.

macho o hembra. Konke fue bautizado/a en 2012
por los alumnos de la Escuela 214 de El Riacho
San José en Península Valdés. Konke significa
“dulce” en lengua Tehuelche (Aoniken), tribu del
sur de Argentina.

The calf was first observed in March 2010. In 2012
Konke (PTN-022) was seen with Jazmín (PTN002) and Lea (PTN-003). We do not know if it
male or female. Konke was named in May 2012 by
