Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
We hope that you had a Happy Thanksgiving Day with your family. May the Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ continue to bless upon your
family! We had a joyful celebration with the CCD students on the night before Thanksgiving Day at St. Ann’s Church hall. We had a
prayerful Thanksgiving Mass on Thursday at each of our regional parishes. We thank you for coming to our Thanksgiving Masses to Thank
the Lord for all the blessings we have received. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. We thank the core team who worked hard
throughout the year making quilts to give to those in need on behalf of St. Ann’s Church. We are very proud of this group who come each
Wednesday throughout the year to create beautiful quilts to give away (towards the end of the year). And, we thank them for their generosity of time and talent in this ministry. We have so many reasons and blessings to thank God for what we have received throughout the year.
We sent out a Thanksgiving notice to people who have made their commitment to assist our parish in living up to their Stewardship commitment. We gave out boxes of food before Thanksgiving started, as a way for us to share the blessings that we have received to those in
need. We thank St. Vincent De Paul at St. Ann’s Church for this ministry. We are preparing ourselves to enter the Advent Season, which is
the commencement of the Christmas Season. We worked with the liturgical ministers to celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, which is a
liturgical celebration to conclude the liturgical year on Cycle A and we commence the new liturgical year on the first Sunday of Advent. We
will have a week of retreat with the Vietnamese Community at St. Ann’s Church. The Missionary of the Words will lead a Vocation retreat
for Sacred Heart’s Church at St. John of the Woods. There is also a retreat with the Vietnamese Youth Group at St. Ann. We have some
Advent materials available at the back of the Church to assist you on the journey of preparation. We cordially invite you to join us in this
Advent Season by preparing ourselves spiritually by attending the retreat, making the commitment to pray daily, attend daily Mass, and
receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There is more information in our regional bulletin and parishes’ website that we cordially invite
you to visit.
It was a wonderful day for the Fall Gathering of Priests and Pastoral Coordinators at Holy Rosary in Edmonds last week. I learned a lot
from this gathering about the parish life and her ministry and how we can use the resources that we have to provide effective evangelization,
pastoral, and spiritual care for the people of God. A priest would be assigned to each parish in a way that he could have a consistent presence with the people. We have three priests and we wish that they were regularly present at each parish office, so you can have access to
them and talk with them regularly. Each priest will celebrate four weekend Masses of which we are doing. A priest’s assignment is made
according to the wellbeing of each priest (i.e. mental, physical, and spiritual health, and his strengths and limitations). Many times, we want
them to do a little more but we need to understand that they have their strengths and limitations so we need to maximize the gifts of the laity
in helping to carry out the mission of the Church and our parishes. I have reflected on this statement and without you to believe and work
hard on it, our parishes (regional parishes) will not be able to become alive. Our finances are limited and the number of priests and staff are
limited, so we need volunteers to assist us to carry on this mission. We like to have a priest, so we need to pray and promote the vocation to
the priesthood at our home and our parish to ensure we have one to serve us. We need to step up to serve others and we do not need to wait
for others to come to serve us. We need to spend time in training so we can serve others well. It was a wonderful day reflecting on how we
can provide the best Pastoral and Spiritual care for the people of God. We have so much that we need to do within our regional parishes. I
ask you to pray for the vocation to the priesthood, and each family needs to encourage their son(s) to this vocation or sponsor a priest to
support and pray for his ministry if we want to have more priests who are qualified to serve us. We have more meetings with the deanery
and with the Archdiocese in this area of planning on how we can evangelize and provide the best care, pastorally and spiritually to serve
God’s people.
You are cordially invited to come to the Parish Leadership Meeting each month to share any concern(s) you may have. It is difficult for me
as your Pastor not knowing what your concerns are, so I can assist or clarify them with you. I would like to have a good relationship with
you, so if you have any concern or issue that you need to share with me about our parishes, please call me or send me an e-mail or letter or
make an appointment with me so we can visit each other to talk on the issue of our parishes. The best way is to come to the parish leadership meeting each month so we can share our concern and we are able to listen to others’ concern as well, and in doing this we are helping
the parish to have the best communication and be able to work with each other rather than my way or no way, which is hard for the unity of
the parish. As Pastor, I spend time regularly at each parish weekly and meet with the parish leadership each month. I also meet with the
priest from each parish and parish staff each day and this same level of commitment is also extended to you as well. There are many things
that we need your help and support, so please engage in your parish and participate in our parish activities. I have heard complaints from
those who are involved in many areas that others do not come to meetings or participate and my response to them is many are very busy
with work and their family. But, their response to me is ‘the same as you Father (being very busy), but you are always there.’ I have committed myself to serving you and like to be with you, so I ask you to care for our parish by engaging and participate in what you can. If you
are not able to support actively, you can still give support to those who are giving their lives to serve us through prayers and other ways. It
is so easy to complain and give criticisms on others’, but when we do it ourselves it is not easy. When we walk in the shoes of others, it is
then that we are able to understand and know how hard it is. So, the best way is to support them and assist them on what they do. It is hard
for me to share with you this concern, but we have to talk about this issue and concern, so we are able to find a solution to take care of it
with respect and with love.
Advent is a time for us to prepare ourselves to welcome the Lord into our lives and welcome others into our journey of Faith. May the Lord
continue to bless upon you and thank you for your love and care for our parishes!
Sincerely, Yours in Christ,

Advent is a time for preparation. This is accomplished through
our ability to hear and see as well as to listen and respond. Advent invites us to celebrate God’s presence among us here and
now through two features. 1. The Incarnation is both a historical
and an on-going event: Christ is still taking on flesh and he is
continually present through his body, the Church. Living in the
now is essential because the present is the only place we can encounter God 2. Christianity reminds us that in Christ we also
have a future. Jesus came to Bethlehem and now lives in us. He
will come again to judge the living and the dead. God will be a
God of love and mercy on Judgment day. Advent time invites us
to wait and prepare ourselves for the celebration of Jesus’s birth
and for the day we stand before him in Judgment. Sunday’s in
Advent will focus on the Old Testament readings from Isaiah and
2 Samuel. Cycle B will begin with the first Sunday in Advent.
The first readings will use the theme of caring for the poor and in
the end God’s promise to raise up a Savior from the house of
David. The Psalms of Advent correspond with the messages of
the readings. The second readings have been chosen from four
different letters and underscore the theme of God’s promises.
First Sunday is from 1 Corinthians and focuses on God’s promises; the second Sunday reminds us that God has promised new
heavens and earth; third Sunday we are told to rejoice as God can
bring us to holiness (Gaudete or Rejoice); fourth Sunday Paul
calls us to give glory to God. Weekday masses during Advent
have their own texts differing from the Sunday liturgies.

Mission Statement: We, parishioners of St Ann Parish, are a Catholic faith community in the south end of Tacoma who
proclaim the Gospels and embrace our many cultures and the gifts we share. We come together as one faith community to
celebrate the Eucharist and the Sacraments. We are grateful to those who built this place of worship with faith, sacrifice and
sanctified it with their many years of devotion. We remain focused on our Roman Catholic traditions and promote an
environment of hope, where all can grow into the likeness of Christ.
One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism
which turns us into ...."sourpusses".

Finance Council News
The St. Ann Finance Council met on November 5th. Parish financial reports for September were reviewed and the Parish’s budget performance for the current year was evaluated. Sunday Contributions
remain somewhat less than normal and will be monitored to ensure the Parish remains financially stable.
Thank you to Lata, Jube, and Viet Chi for volunteering to be Witness Speakers for this year’s Sacrificial
Campaign and sharing your Sacrificial Giving experience.
Thanks also to all the groups that have volunteered their time and donated items to make the School
Building usable for Parish activities. Sister Theresa informed the Financial Council that volunteers have
been cleaning the building and keeping it clean, waxed the floors, changed light bulbs, and shampooed
the carpets. Additionally, donations of cash, furniture, vacuum cleaners, restroom supplies, recycle bins,
and energy efficient light bulbs and adapters have been made. These donations and volunteer work help
reduce the cost to the Parish to operate the School Building and are sincerely appreciated.
The Parish remains financially healthy thanks to your continued financial support. Thank you.

In the end, everything has been entrusted
to our protection, and all of us are responsible for it. Be proctors of God’s gifts!
We are called to…
Cultivate a relationship with God.
Worshiping the Lord means giving him the
place that he must have; worshiping the
Lord means stating, believing—not only by
our words—that he alone truly guides our
lives; worshiping the Lord means that we
are convinced before him that he is the
only God, the God of our lives, the God of
our history.
We are called to …
Reach out to people in need.
We are called to…
Respect and protect all of creation.

need, who are often the last we think

It means protecting all creation, the beauty
of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi
showed us. It means respecting the
environment in which we live.
We are called to…
Powerful work.
Jesus’ three questions to Peter about love
are followed by three commands; feed my
lambs, feed my sheep. Let us never forget
the authentic power of service.
We are called to…
Give hope.
To protect creation, to protect every man,
and every woman, to look upon them with
tenderness and love, it is to let a shaft of
light break through the heavy clouds; it is
to bring the warmth of hope!
“Let us protect Christ in our
lives, so that we can protect
others, so that we can protect
creation!”—-Pope Francis
