Salem, OR — El lunes, 10 de septiembre, Salem tendrá
una nueva escuela primaria — “nueva” en término de

área nordeste de Salem.

“We want our kids to learn in different
ways,” Cobb said.
The grand opening featured a visit
from Anthony Chávez, grandson of the
legendary labor leader. “This is probably
the best school dedicated to my grandfather,” he said. Chávez f lew up from California for the occasion.
In addition to traditional learning, the
school will help children to develop a strong
sense of character and their role in the community, according to according to Marisa
Salinas, the civil rights and EEO officer for
the Oregon Department of Human Services.
“The end of all education should surely
be service to others,” she said.
“This school is a continuing learning
[experience] for everyone — including
teachers,” Salinas added.
Several of the rooms have one-way windows, allowing teachers and university students can observe classes without disrupting them. Willamette University, Western
Oregon University, and Corban University will participate in learning programs
at Chávez Elementary.
The two-story building will accommodate 600 students.
Teaching tools

from teachers was “Literacy Squared.”
This program, developed at the University of Colorado, promises to help children learn a second language using new
techniques.
Josette Boyden, a teacher at the school,
described the “Literacy Squared” program
“a literacy-based ESL [English as a Second
Language] technique.”
According to the BUENO Center at the
University of Colorado, “The framework
is based on three research-based concepts that suggest that the improvement
of schooling for emerging bilingual children can be accomplished via programs
that develop biliteracy through attention
to literacy in Spanish as well as English,

Preventing child sexual abuse: Conversation is key

Portland, OR — Woodburn residents are still reeling from the Aug. 13 arrest of
Rev. Ángel Armando Pérez,
the priest at St. Luke Catholic Cathedral. Many are
wondering how someone
so trusted and respected
could commit the crime
he is accused of — chasing a 12-year-old boy down
the street in his underwear
after giving him alcohol and
touching his “privates.”
Whether or not Father
Ángel is guilty, the reality
is that strangers pose less
of a threat to children than
those who are closest to
them. According to the U.S.
Department of Justice, 93
percent of juveniles who are
sexually abused know the
perpetrator. In about onethird of cases, the offender
is a family member.
At least one in four girls
and one in six boys will experience sexual abuse before
the age of 18, according
to the Centers for Disease
Control. Some researchers
believe the prevalence of
abuse could be higher than
30 percent.
While it is disturbing
to realize that every adult
probably knows a victim
(and probably a perpetrator) of child sexual abuse,
parents are not powerless in
the face of abuse. The most
powerful tool parents have
is conversation.
Talk about it
Talking about staying
safe in neutral kid-friendly
terms helps children maintain healthy boundaries and
empowers them to seek support form trusted adults.
“It is never too early to
have conversations with
your children letting them
know that it is not ok for
others to touch them in
a way that hurts them or
makes them uncomfortable,” says Jennifer Marsh,
vice president of victim services for the Rape, Abuse &
Incest National Network
(RAINN). “Start early [as
young as 2] by talking to
your kids and letting them
know that they can always
come to you when a classmate, teacher, coach, family
member, etc. has touched
them or made them feel
uncomfortable.”
Child sexual abuse prevention organization Stop
It Now suggests framing
the conversation in term
of “rules” rather than talking about “predators.”
For example: “Say, ‘Some
people need help if they
can’t remember the rules
for how to behave around
kids.’”
Violating those rules
might include such behaviors as hugging, touching,
kissing, tickling, wrestling
with, or holding a child who
does not want this kind of
contact, the organization
explains. Essentially, anything that makes a child feel
unsafe or uncomfortable.
The organization also
suggests posing scenarios and asking children
how they would respond.
For example, asking what
they would do if an adult
wanted to show them naked
pictures or the babysitter
walked into the bathroom
without knocking.
Pay attention
While you can’t always
predict which adults may
pose a threat to a child (and
they are often the people
you least expect), there are
behaviors that may reflect
an unhealthy relationship.
“If an adult seems to
pay extra attention to your
child, or your child dislikes
being around a particular
person — these are some
warning signs,” Marsh says.
“Another red flag is if your
child begins to receive gifts
from an adult that seem
over the top or there is really
no reason they should be
receiving a gift.”
Offenders often gain
a child’s trust gradually,
offering gifts or grown-up
privileges (such as R-rated
movies or alcohol) to establish a relationship built
on “special secrets” that
appeals to a child’s fascination with adult life while
being taboo enough to discourage mentioning it to
parents.
“People who abuse kids
often first build a relationship with the child. They
may ‘test’ the child to see
how the child reacts to different situations. For example, the adult may put their
arm around a kid then move
to hugging them or asking
them to sit on their lap,”
Stop It Now says.
This kind of calculated
manipulation can dissuade
children from talking about
the abuse, making it especially important to pay
attention to changes in
a child’s behavior or attitude.
“Perpetrators are incredibly adept at controlling or
manipulating their victims,”
Marsh says. “Some of these
tactics include threats of violence against the victim or
their loved ones, gifts that, if
accepted by the victim, convince the victim that they
wanted or deserved what
happened, or they tell the
victim that no one would
ever believe them.”
Keeping an eye out for
changes in your child’s
behavior can alert you to
sexual abuse. Signs can
include withdrawing from
activities, wetting the bed,
a change in appetite, or
knowing things about sex
they shouldn’t.
Listen and believe
If a child tells you they
have been sexually abused,
listen to their story (or
encourage them to draw
or write about it) but don’t
challenge it.
“A parent’s reaction when
a child discloses is one of
the most important factors in determining how a
child recovers from abuse,”
Marsh says. “It is imperative that parents believe
their children. It is ok to ask
questions of your child, just
be careful to use words that
the child will not perceive as
blaming or critical of their
role in the abuse. Nothing
a child, or adult, does can
ever justify being hurt or
violated.”
Marsh adds that children
may describe the abuse
using the playful sounding language of the abuse,
such as “tickling” or “fooling
around” and to not be afraid
to ask the child what part of
their body was touched.
Even if the child is accusing someone you trust and
would never expect to be
an abuser, it’s important
for them to know you are
on their side.
“It is so important to
believe and support a child
who discloses that they
have been abused or hurt by
an adult or another child,”
Marsh says. “The support
that a child does or does not
receive when they are young
can dictate the long-term
effects of their trauma.”
Report and support
Whether you are acting
on suspicion, or a child has
disclosed abuse to you, what
do you do with that information once you have it?
While some professionals are required by law to
report information pertaining to possible child sexual
abuse, anyone can call their
local child welfare office or
911 to report a threat to the
safety of a child. If you aren’t
sure who to call, contact

for assistance.

de seis varones sufrirán de abuso sexual
antes de los 18 años de edad, según los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades. Algunos investigadores opinan que la prevalencia de abuso podría ser más alta del 30
por ciento.
Aunque es perturbador realizar que cada
adulto probablemente conoce a una víctima (y probablemente a un perpetrador) de
abuso sexual de niños, los padres de familia
no están imposibilitados cuando tengan
que darle frente al abuso. La herramienta
más poderosa que los padres de familia
tienen es la conversación.

La orga nización de prevención de
abuso sexual de niños, Stop It Now, sugiere
enmarcar la conversación en términos de
“reglas” en vez de hablar sobre “depredadores”. Por ejemplo: “Diga, ‘Algunas personas necesitan ayuda si no se pueden recordar de las reglas de cómo comportarse
cuando están cerca de los niños’”.
Violar dichas reglas podría incluir tales
comportamientos como abrazar, tocar,

contacto, explicó la organización. Esencialmente, cualquier cosa que haga que un niño
no se sienta seguro o se sienta incómodo.
La organización también sugiere plantear ejemplos y preguntarles a los niños
cómo responderían. Por ejemplo, preguntarles qué harían si un adulto quisiera
mostrarles fotos con personas desnudas o
si la niñera entrara al baño sin antes tocar
la puerta.
Ponga atención
Aunque uno nunca puede predecir cuáles
adultos podrían representar una amenaza
a un niño (y a menudo son las personas
que uno menos se imagina), existen comportamientos que podrían reflejar una relación malsana.
“Si un adulto pareciera darle atención
adicional a su niño, o si a su niño no le gusta
estar cerca de una persona en particular —

comentó Marsh. “Otra señal de peligro es
si su niño empieza a recibir regalos de un
adulto que pareciera que son demasiado
caros o no existe ninguna razón por la cual
ellos deberían estar recibiendo un regalo”.
Los infractores a menudo obtienen la
confianza de un niño de manera gradual,
ofreciéndoles regalos o privilegios para
adultos (tales como películas para mayores de 17 años o alcohol) para establecer
una relación establecida en “secretos especiales” que son atractivos a la fascinación
que tienen los niños con la vida de los adultos, pero que a la vez aún son lo suficientemente prohibidos para desalentarlos a que
se los mencionen a sus padres.
“Las personas que abusan a niños a
menudo primero establecen una relación
con el niño. Ellos podrían ‘experimentar’
con el niño para ver cómo reacciona a diferentes situaciones. Por ejemplo, el adulto

Escúchenlos y créanlos
Si un niño le dice que ha sido abusado
sexualmente, escuchen su historia (o
incítenlos a que dibujen o escriban algo al
respecto) pero no la reten.
“La reacción de un padre/madre cuando
un niño lo revela es uno de los factores más
importantes para determinar la manera en
que un niño se recupera del abuso”, expresó
Marsh. “Es imperativo que los padres les
crean a sus niños. Es bueno hacerle preguntas a su niño, pero tenga cuidado de
usar palabras que el niño no percibirá como
si lo están culpando o están criticando su
papel en el abuso. Nada que un niño, o un
adulto, haga puede jamás justificar ser lastimado o violado”.
Marsh agregó que los niños podrían
describir el abuso usando palabras que
suenan juguetonas para hablar del abuso,
tales como “hacer cosquillas” o “andar de
locos” y que uno no debe tener miedo de
preguntarle al niño qué parte del cuerpo
le tocaron.
Aún si el niño está acusando a alguien
en que usted confía y nunca esperaría que
fuera un abusador, es importante que [el
niño] sepa que usted está de su lado.
“Es muy importante creer y apoyar a un
niño que revela que ha sido abusado o lastimado por un adulto u otro niño”, añadió
Marsh. “El apoyo que un niño recibe o no
recibe cuando es joven puede dictar los
efectos del trauma a largo plazo”.
Reportes y apoyo
Ya sea que esté actuando porque sospecha algo, o porque un niño le ha revelado
que ha sido abusado, ¿qué debe hacer con
la información una vez la tiene?
Aunque se les exige a algunos profesionales a reportar la información concerniente
a posible abuso sexual de niños, cualquiera
puede llamar a la oficina local de bienestar

Nueva illuminates diverse
performers and works from
throughout the Americas
and Spain, bringing attention to innovators while also
paying homage to the originators.
Perhaps the piece that
best represents this blending of genres and old and

scene and tone for a staged
reading of “A Dialogue of

For Sanchez, “Flor y
Canto” represents “a connection to roots … but
it’s also about the higher
thought: what are we getting from this?”
After missing the festival
in years past due to rehearsals for Miracle’s annual
Day of the Dead celebration, Sanchez has passed
the directing reins for that
show this year, allowing her
not only to focus her creative energy on the massive undertaking of directing La Luna Nueva, but also
to appreciate the festival as
an audience member.
“I’m looking forward to
immersing myself in the
luxury … of seeing everything,” Sanchez says.

a few of the creative individuals sharing their talents
during this year’s festival.
El Último Coconut
Seattle performer Gerald
Alejandro Ford takes on
seven different roles — without any costume changes
— in his one-man show, “El
Último Coconut” (Sept. 24,
7 p.m.).
Coco, a World of Warcraft-obsessed “internet
troll” who can’t seem to
muster the same level of
confidence and cockiness
around his family and that
he has online, is in search of
his true identity.
Ford is not himself a
gamer and does not consider the play to be autobiographical, but Coco’s aspirations and his family life
are pretty familiar to the 25year-old playwright/actor.
“I have been considered
a ‘coconut,’ especially in
my family — ‘white on the
inside, brown on the outside,’” he says.
Ford calls “El Último
Coconut” something of a
bridge between stand-up
comedy and theater that
has drawn comparisons to
the film “Real Women Have
Curves” and the novel “The
Brief and Wondrous Life of
Oscar Wao.”
But, he insists, “It’s very
much a Gerald Ford production. I don’t hold back as
far as raunchy, adult humor.
There’s not a lot of subtlety
to me.”
Ford will also appear as
Sancho Panza in the staged
reading of “Don Quixote
and Sancho Panza: Homeless in Seattle” on Sept. 23
at 5 p.m.
Alma y Azúcar
Through songs and stories from Celia Cruz’s life,
the Seattle-based band
Alma y Azúcar — featuring
Alma Villegas (lead vocals),
Ben Verdier piano, Ricardo
Guity (congas and percussion), Jeff Volkman (bass),
and Steve Mostovoy (trumpet) — will perform a tribute to “la reina de la salsa”
(Sept. 22, 8 p.m.).
“I’m the soul, and the
boys are the sugar,” Villegas says.
The singer/actress says
she wishes she had a romantic story to share for how she
began singing Cruz’s songs,
but there’s a pretty simple
explanation: “For some
miraculous reason, her
range is pretty much identical to my own.”
Villegas had been considering putting together a
retrospective on Celia’s life,
and La Luna Nueva affords
her the opportunity to give
it a try on a small scale
before applying for grants
to support a full-scale production.
“That’s the dream,” Villegas says.
Her more immediate
hope is for her audience to
have a good time, sing along
with some of the coros, and
— space allowing — “get up
and shake it.”
¡La cosa está Pelú’a!
Pelú Theatre’s company
of acrobats will share the
day-to-day struggles of an
immigrant day laborer in
the language of circus — as
well as Spanish and English
— in “¡La cosa está Pelú’a!”
on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
Pelú Artistic Director
CarlosAlexis Cruz says he
was inspired by conversations he’s had with day
workers regularly hired at
Imago Theatre — and by the
backpacks they always have
in tow.
“What do they carry
them and why are they so
attached to them?” he wondered.
Like Villegas, Cruz is
hoping to use the experience at La Luna Nueva to
gauge audience reaction
and build a future “pure
circus show” that adequately reflects the “daily
grind of a day worker.”
“We’re in a very exploratory kind of space now,”
Cruz says. “I think it’s going
to be a fun way to expose
some of these things to the
audience.”
One Song
A collection of paintings
by Renée Zangara, the “One
Song” exhibition will be
open an hour before every
performance, for the entire
run of the festival.
“The paintings are
abstractions inspired by real
time-and-space events —
places I’ve been and things
I’ve seen,” Zangara says. “I
am aware of an energy that
permeates and surrounds
the Earth and I aim to apply
paint in such a way that it
reflects my awareness of
this dynamic energy. Also, I
believe this energy or vibration connects all things, and
through it, all things are
connected to a greater intelligence. This greater intelligence is sometimes referred
to as the Universe; the literal
translation of the word universe — uni verse — is one
song. An aspect of La Luna
Nueva is connection, what
better place to exhibit One
Song?”

El primer atento de la
directora artística del Miracle MainStage, Olga Sánchez, de dirigir La Luna
Nueva también representa
su primer atento en manejar un festival tan largo.
Dieciséis noches de presentaciones permite una poco
común diversidad de disciplinas, culturas, estilos, idiomas y perspectivas.
“Existe una variedad de
voces aquí de las cuales
estoy muy emocionada —
y de experiencias”, comentó
Sánchez.

obsesionado con World
of Warcraft que parece no

alrededor de su familia y el
cual sí tiene en línea, está en
búsqueda de su verdadera
identidad.
Ford en sí no juega en
el Internet y no considera
que la obra es autobiográfica, pero las ambiciones de
Coco y la vida con su familia
le son bastante familiares
al autor teatral/actor de 25
años de edad.
“Me han considerado
como un ‘coco’, especialmente en mi familia —
‘blanco por adentro, café
por afuera’”, dijo él.

entre comedia pública y

In addition to displaying the depth, complexities, and beauty of Latin American culture, the festival’s founder wants PDXLAFF
to be a resource for immigrants “who are
really so proud of their roots. Many people
can’t travel back to their home countries,”
Osterroth Sussman says.
And while a voyage to Latin America by
film is definitely cheaper than by plane,
there are some hefty behind-the-scenes
expenses that rarely occur to moviegoers
snuggled into their cushy theater seats.
According to Osterroth Sussman, the festival needs to raise $8,000 by Oct. 18.
“We have sponsors and the sponsors
help us a lot,” she says, “… but there’s still a
lot of expenses that need to be covered.”
The most fundamental aspect of the festival — sharing Latin America’s contributions to the silver screen — requires big
bucks for the shipping of the movies and
their screening fees.
“That’s why we really need the support
of the community in order to keep going,”
Osterroth Sussman says.
Returning Oct. 12-18 to the Hollywood
Theater, the sixth annual PDXLAFF features
eight films that will transport audiences to
Cuba, Chile, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru,
and Spain. The festival opens with the Oct.
12 screening of “Hidalgo: La Historia Jamás
Contada,” an intimate examination of Mexican revolutionary leader Miguel Hidalgo
y Costilla.
“In Mexico we learn about Hidalgo as a
hero,” Osterroth says, “and in this film we
get to learn about him as a human.”
Following the 7 p.m. show, the opening

Portland, OR — The Regional Arts and
Culture Council (RACC), the Portland metro
area’s premiere arts funding organization,
has appointed Lina García Seabold as their
new board chair and increased their outreach to support diverse artists and organizations, including such fresh talents as
local painter Mónica G. MacKenzie.
A resident of the Rose City since 1969,
Seabold has observed Portland evolve into
a vibrant and diverse haven for creativity.
“I’ve seen this city grow, and I really like
what I see right now!” she notes with excitement. “I just love living here, especially from
an arts and culture perspective.”
In Seabold’s view, RACC has been intrinsic to this evolution.
“RACC has always been a leader in Portland’s art scene; we’ve overseen funding for
the Portland Art Museum, the symphony,
the ballet, Milagro Theatre, the whole
gamut from large arts organizations and
independent artists,” she says. “RACC has
been a leader in the scene way before [my
involvement began], and I hope that this
leadership in the arts continues to extend
to everyone who needs to be represented
in the community, including the different
[ethic and racial] minority communities
and the LGBTQ population.”
In order to achieve this mission, Seabold intends to steer the council towards
a more holistic embrace of diverse artists
and art organizations, and to enfranchise
all communities in Portland’s art and culture scene.
“RACC is increasing its outreach efforts
to all minority communities, not just the
Hispanic community,” Seabold explains.
“Because I am Hispanic, my natural outreach happens in that community because,
well, that’s my community. The institutional
outreach, though, is broader.”
The council’s outreach takes numerous
forms, and is aimed towards artists and
organizations as well as the general public.
One way RACC aims to make the arts accessible to all is by ensuring that admission
prices aren’t prohibitive for members of
diverse economic situations.
“RACC has tried really hard to work with
different organizations to create opportunities for people with different income levels
to ensure that they can afford the ticket
prices for at least certain performances or
dates,” she says.
The council also brings art to the people
by funding the city’s public art projects, such
as statues and murals, including one painted
in the last year outside of the Cuban restaurant Pambiche. As another example, RACC
recently announced their funding a largescale bus shelter/sculpture designed by
internationally acclaimed Cuban artist Jorge
Pardo to be installed on NE Broadway.
The organization also offers funding to
ensure that cultural festivals and events are
able to represent their communities’ traditions and celebrations to all of Portland’s
residents. “Cultural events are as important
as a 3D-sculpture or 2D-painting …,” Seabold says. “To me, all such things are art.”
Finally, RACC offers grants to individual artists of all communities to ensure
that their unique voice can enter the larger
chorus of Portland’s art establishment. To
facilitate this for artists of minority communities, Seabold explains that the organization offers assistance to those who may be
intimidated by the grant-writing process.
“If something needs to be translated,
it’ll be translated,” she says. “If someone
needs technical assistance in understanding how to apply for the grants, we’ll have
it available.”
One such Latina artist who has benefitted from RACC’s commitment to fostering
diverse artistic voices is Mónica G. MacKenzie, whose upcoming exhibition, “Beauty
and Power of Latin America,” opens Oct. 1
at the Beaverton City Hall Gallery.
MacKenzie started painting in her native
Mexico in 2004 by creating images of the
Virgin Mary on discarded boards she found
at construction sites. As her style evolved
towards the abstract, she incorporated
more of the vibrant colors and themes that
she experienced around her, and made a
name for herself as a painter whose vivid
and passionate work captured the essential qualities of Latin culture.
When MacKenzie relocated to Portland
in late 2010, she saw that her work occupied a different visual niche than what she
observed in the city.
“On my second day in the United States,
I went to a gallery, and while I’m not criticizing the art scene here, I found that everything was grey — the entire ‘Pearl District

voces artísticas es Mónica G. MacKenzie, cuya próxima
exhibición, “Beauty and Power of Latin America” (La Belleza
y el Poder de América Latina) se inaugurará el 1ro de octubre en la Galería del Ayuntamiento de Beaverton.
MacKenzie empezó a pintar en México, su país de
origen, en el año 2004 al crear imágenes de la Virgen
María en tableros descartados que encontraba en sitios
de construcción. Al ir evolucionando su estilo hacia
el abstracto, ella incorporó
más de los colores vibrantes y temas que ella observaba en sus alrededores, y
se hizo conocer como una
pintora cuyas obras vívidas y apasionadas capturaban las calidades esenciales de la cultura latina.
Cuando MacKenzie se mudó a Portland a finales del
2010, ella notó que sus obras ocupaban un nicho visual
diferente de lo que ella observaba en la ciudad.
“En mi segundo día en los Estados Unidos, fui a una
galería, y aunque no estoy criticando a la comunidad
artística aquí, encontré que todo era gris — toda la ‘estética de arte decorativa sofisticada del Pearl District’ era toda

MacKenzie’s dedication to her vibrant
vision continued, though, and she soon
secured an exhibition at First Congregational United Church of Christ in downtown Portland.
“It’s a church full of wonderful folks —
I’m a member there now, myself — but
when I first showed,” she says, some of the
older members of the congregation commented ‘I love your art, but it’s so bright it
hurts my eyes!’”
The artist was encouraged by members
of the Metropolitan Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce to seek funding from RACC — a
process that she found intimidating at first.
“I never thought I’d be able to write a
grant,” MacKenzie says. “English is not my
first language, I barely speak it! The guidelines were just so different than what we
had in Mexico, format-wise. [However,]
I thought that the art scene here needed
color. Hispanics can feel left out of the art
scene here — if you go to a gallery and see
all these grey, dark, sad work that doesn’t
relate to the Hispanic inspiration, it leaves
out the community. The grant would give
me the perfect opportunity to showcase
my work and to assert that the art scene is
approachable for Hispanic people.”
MacKenzie raves about the help RACC
provided her in writing her grant.
“Even for me, as someone from another
country, [they were] so helpful, so constructive,” she recalls. “The process was very
easy; you just have to comply with everything, and have the discipline to do it yourself. That’s the way it should be, though.”
MacKenzie ultimately was granted $4,395
for her exhibition, an amount that stunned
her. “I’m still in awe! I’m still in shock! I feel
so honored and so happy,” she says.
MacKenzie praises RACC’s support of
Latin American artists, because, she says,
“they encourage us as artists and as a community to spread our work to the world,
helping all of us enjoy, learn, grow and work
together as the big human family we really
are. I’ve found a heaven here in Portland
as an artist. This is why I do what I do — I
create for the community, out of love for
them, with all my heart and strength.”

certain immigrants of Arab and South Asian countries to
register under the U.S. Patriot Act II. After families complied, some who overstayed their visas were placed under
deportation proceedings.
“It’s hard to trust. It’s been very rough for my family,”
she said.
Muzaffar Chishti, director of Migration Policy Institute’s
(MPI) office at the New York University School of Law, noted
that the deferred-action policy could, legally speaking, be
discontinued if Romney becomes president — or even if
Obama wins and decided to revoke or limit the policy.
“These are just guidelines issued by the Department
of Homeland Security and not a statute enacted by Congress,” Chishti said in a phone interview. Ideally, these young
immigrants would gain legal protection if the DREAM Act
or broader immigration reforms are passed, he said. But he
believes it’s still favorable for affected youth to avail of the
deferral program.
Chishti also said he hopes Romney, if elected, would opt
not to reverse DACA.
“These young immigrants can work, travel, and live a
normal life, and their deferral can be renewed after two
years. It’s going to be like the Temporary Protected Status
(TPS) given to Ecuadorians, Hondurans, and Salvadorans
since the 1990s,” Chishti said. “But at the end of the day,
people make their own decision.”

reputation for restoring cars and motorcycles,
and his staff of friendly professionals, who made
her feel very welcome. Lew and his team are
known for restoration of muscle, vintage, and
race cars, along with motorcycles and, of course,
family cars, too. Lew took the time to talk to
Melanie about the various levels of paint, finish,
and the body work involved to ensure a flawless
sleek liquid-black finish and the price for each
level of service.
A 2002 Road King Standard with factory black
paint has the stock gold and red pin-stripping
with the matching Harley-Davidson tank decal.
This 2002 combination is outdated and just
needed to be redone to bring the bike into 2012
and give it that street appeal that will turn heads.
A new high-gloss paint job will be the cherry on
top of the sundae for this Road King.
Since this bike already has a ton of chrome on it
along with Hooker pipes that set off car alarms as
she rolls by, and with the factory engine having been
bored out — beefing it up to over 1600 ccs which
gives it so much power that it reaches 50 mph in
second gear — she will be show-ready after the
paint! The Standard Road King also comes with
the hard saddle bags — which are made out of
fiberglass — and these too had pin-stripping
on them. Melanie wanted to have all the
pin-stripping
removed along with the tank decal, which would
be replaced by a chrome tank badge.
To remove the pin-stripping would require a lot of
sanding, as the pin-stripping will bleed through the
new paint if not removed entirely. The mechanics
at Northwest Motorcycle Works took the bike
apart, keeping everything very well organized.
“It was crazy to see my Harley all stripped down
without the tank, bags, and tins,” Melanie said.
“The bike looked like a skeleton, but it gave me
the chance to thoroughly clean the frame and all
the hard-to-reach spots.”
Melanie found Lew and Jorge awesome to work
with. She arrived with the tank, tins, and bags
wrapped in blankets. Jorge assured her that
her Harley would be well taken care of and look
fabulous when she saw it next.
“Jorge was super professional, which is great to
see when you hand them your bike in pieces,”
Melanie said with a smile.
Each piece of the Harley was taken to the repair
section of the huge Maaco warehouse, where it
would be prepped for painting. Maaco specializes
in collision repair and can help you with any
damage to your vehicles’s body. In less than a
week, Jorge called Melanie to let her know to
pick up the painted pieces.
“I drove over with clean blankets to wrap the
pieces in, making sure that nothing gets scratched
or bumped,” Melanie said. “I can’t wait to see my
bike all back together. The paint is amazing, super
glossy looking! I am absolutely thrilled with Lew and
Jorge. It was a smooth, affordable, and easy project

Professor in support of the B.A.S.W. degree,

The Literacy Squared intervention includes authentic

internal structures of each
of the languages, emphasizing direct, explicit, and
c ol l a b or a t i v e i n s t r uct iona l approaches t hat
have proven to be beneficial for emerging biling ua l ch i ld ren. Inst r uction is planned to include
direct and explicit attention to cross-language connections to enable children
to learn how to use both of
their languages in strategic
ways to enhance their biliteracy development.”
Kellie Leavenworth, a
first-grade teacher at the
school, noted that in addition to English and Spanish,
children speaking 26 different languages will attend
the school. Children from as
far away as Russia and the
Marshall Islands will need
to learn English.
“It’s challenging,” Leavenworth observed, “but
that’s what I love about my
job.”
