“Bear much fruit and…Be my Disciple!
Be my Disciple and…Bear much fruit!”
Canonization, the process by which the
Catholic Church declares someone to be a
saint, is often misunderstood. Many people
believe that the Church teaches that ONLY
those affirmed by this ritual are saints. But
this is false.
The teaching declares that certain people,
because of the public and private holiness of
their life and with confirmation of two miracles
granted by God in response to the intercession
attributed to the person, may be honored as a Saint
– meaning that they are sharing in the Divine Life of
God in heaven.
The Church is not saying that these are the only
saints, it is simply pronouncing with certainty that a
person has come to the fulfillment of the life they demonstrated on
earth. It is an official act of the Church and therefore has strict
guidelines and criteria. Hence, practically speaking, not everyone in
heaven fits this criteria (i.e. not all were popular to the degree that
others were praying for their assistance).
The canonized Saints are a random sampling of ordinary people
who through their faith and dedication in following God were able to
live extraordinary lives. No different than the Souls in heaven whose
names have not been promulgated as Saints, but whose witness we
may have known. And (I hope this isn’t a surprise to you) it is highly
probable there are also non-Catholic saints!
This Sunday, Pope Francis will officially degree that Mother Teresa
is to be regarded as a Saint and that she should receive the honor
due to all those recognized by the Church and that the faithful can
call upon her intercession (‘pray to her’) in their needs.
In this Sunday’s Gospels Jesus says, “If anyone comes to me
without hating [loving less] his father and mother, wife and children,
brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my
disciple.” Mother Teresa certainly was a Disciple! She loved the Lord
the most and thus was able to give up everything to follow His call.
Throughout her life of humility, service and love she showed the
care and compassion of Christ to the poorest of the poor. No one will
ever know how many people- how many souls – where touched by
her Gospel witness, both by receiving her care and that of her sisters
or by being inspired by her commitment and counsel.
She was first a disciple, and now a Saint!
This is the path we are all called to! To “love less” the things,
relationships, experiences of this world by putting God first and
being His Disciple. Remember our parish theme: “By this is my
Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”
(John 15:8)
BECOMING a disciple means having a real relationship with God. It
requires serious, honest, daily communication (prayer). BECOMING a
disciple involves humbly accepting Christ and trusting that God
knows better than me and you. BECOMING means transformation,
and transformation necessitates change: change of attitude, routine,
language, habits, dreams, focus, and maybe even friends or careers.
BECOMING a disciple is the first step toward becoming a Saint,
toward ETERNAL HAPPINESS!
Saint Mother Teresa, pray for us!
Peace, Nick

BREVE COMENTARIO A LA LITURGIA DE HOY
ENSEÑEMOS A LOS NUESTROS, O LOS ENSEÑARÁN MAL.
Si quieres algo bien hecho, hazlo tú mismo.
