Father Fred writes…
Happy
Easter. I have a strange question for you on this
resurrection morning. Is Easter a noun or a verb?
The reason that I ask is important. If Easter is a
noun then maybe it is a one-day celebration and
then we go back to our normal way of life. If Easter
is a verb, then it must be a verb of action. Eastering.
Jesus’ resurrection means that for all who are
baptized and live as Jesus’ disciples then life can
never be the same. As Paul reminded us several
weeks ago, Easter as a verb requires us to forget
what lies behind but straining forward to what lies
ahead, I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the
prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus.
Father Roland Rolheiser spoke of Easter as a verb
when he wrote, “What the resurrection of Jesus
promises is that things can always be new again. It's
never too late to start over. Nothing is irrevocable.
No betrayal is final. No sin is unforgivable. Every
form of death can be overcome. There isn't any loss
that can't be redeemed. Every day is virgin. There is
really no such thing as old age. In the resurrection
we are assured that there are no doors that are
eternally closed, every time we close a door or one
is closed on us, God opens another for us. The
resurrection assures us that God never gives up on
us, even if we give up on ourselves, that God writes
straight with the crooked lines of our lives, that we
can forever re-virginize, regain lost innocence,
become post-sophisticated, and move beyond
bitterness. In a scheme of things where Jesus
breathes out forgiveness on those who betray him
and God raises dead bodies from the dead, we can
begin to believe that in the end all will be well and
every manner of being will be well and everything,
including our own lives, will eventually end sunny
side up. However, the challenge of living this out is
not just that of believing that Jesus rose physically
from the grave, but also, and perhaps even more
importantly, to believe that - no matter our age,
mistakes, betrayals, wounds, and deaths - we can
begin each day afresh, virgin, innocent again, a
child, a moral infant, stunned at the newness of it
all. No matter what we've done, our future is forever
pregnant with wonderful new possibility.
Resurrection is not just a question of one day, after
death, rising from the dead, but it is also about daily
rising from the many mini-graves within which we
so often find ourselves. In your mind is Easter a
noun or a verb? Don’t be surprised if you find me
greeting you at the end of Mass with the
greeting Happy Eastering!!

Mary Magdalene, because of her family's standing, was able to obtain an audience with the Roman
Emperor, Tiberius Caesar. According to the tradition, everyone visiting the Emperor was supposed to
bring him a gift. Rich and influential people, of course, brought expensive gifts whereas the poor offered
whatever they could afford. Mary Magdalene took an egg to the Emperor's palace and handed it to
Tiberius Caesar with the greeting: "Christ is risen!" Tiberius Caesar, responded to her: "How could
anyone ever rise from the dead? It is as impossible as that white egg turning red." While Tiberius was
speaking these words, the egg in the hand of Mary Magdalene began changing color until it finally
became bright red. It became
traditional for Christians throughout the world to color eggs in red.
Mary Magdalene then went on to explain to Tiberius Caesar that the now-red egg symbolized life rising
from a sealed chamber.
Palabras del Padre Fred…
Feliz Pascua.
No te sorprendas si
