Principal News...
Dear Davenport Families,
We’ve had a wonderful beginning to the 2016-2017 school year. It’s
such a happy time seeing all the smiling faces excited to see their friends
and meet their teachers. Our first graders have quickly acclimated back
into school routines and are building stamina in the classroom for independent work during guided reading and math times. Kindergarteners
are learning the procedures for being a student at Davenport School. It
is amazing how quickly they gain independence and become responsible
for themselves. Each day finds them more self-reliant as they enter

Our before and after school car pick-up lines are moving smoothly.
Thank you for pulling as far forward as possible for your child to get out
of the car. The lines have been moving quickly. This is especially important for those parents who drop children off at multiple schools.
Please put our Open House and Book Fair on your calendar. It is September 15th from 6:30-7:50. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you

Si usted no
Sra. Cindy Wills

Kindergarten News
Welcome to Kindergarten
Thank you for attending Kindergarten orientation. Your attendance has facilitated your
child’s adjustments to the routines of kindergarten. We enjoyed meeting the children and
their families. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
The kindergarteners have learned the Davenport Rules; be respectful, be responsible, be
caring and be safe. Our first graders and Mr. Fredrick helped us learn how to be respectful, responsible, caring and safe while on the playground. Thank you first graders and Mr.
Fredrick for your help. You did such a good job!
Many of us read, The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn. Chester the raccoon was a bit nervous
and scared as he started school. Chester’s mother had a special way of helping Chester
feel more comfortable going to school. Be sure to ask your child what Chester’s mom did.
Reminders

Discuss your child’s lunch choice so they can independently do lunch count each day.
·
Pack TWO healthy snacks, separately from your child’s lunch.
·
The first bell rings at 7:50. Children are not allowed access to the building until the
bell rings. Please plan your drop off time accordingly.
·
Homework should be completed and returned by Friday or the last day in the school
week. Be sure to attach any completed work with the homework sheet. Don’t forget
student’s name on all work turned in.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS (from Davenport Handbook)

wear a visitor’s sticker while in the building. We greatly appreciate your involvement at

Reading Connections
Reading aloud to your child allows you
to spend time together, builds reading
skills and a love of books.
Read regularly: Aim for 10-15 minutes
a day. Bedtime is often best, but a
sibling’s sports practice or doctor’s
appointment works too.
Take turns choosing books: Children
sometimes like to hear favorites over
and over again. When it is your turn
you can add variety with nonfiction,
poetry, your favorite, or new stories.
Be playful: You can uses voices for
characters, or substitute your child’s or
family member names for character
names in the story.
You don’t have to be an expert reader
– your child will love it because it’s you!
Reminders
Davenport Open House is September
15th at 6:30 – Stop by room 21!
Fun with Words
Choose a three-letter
word with a common
chunk (2 or 3 letters
found in many words
like: ap, en, ill, ot, ame)
For an example, I’ll pick
cat. Now have your child
change the beginning
sound to make new
words like: hat, bat, sat,
mat. How many can he
think of? As an extra
challenge, try some
blends or diagraphs at
the beginning: flat, brat,
chat, that.

First Grade September Newsletter
We have been focusing on learning our school rules. The four B’s for Davenport are Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Caring and Be Safe. Ask your child if he or she can recite them
to you.
Snack time is very important. Please pack one HEALTHY snack for your child each day. A
snack can be fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, cheese, nuts, popcorn, or crackers.
A weekly first grade newsletter will be sent home each week starting in September. This
newsletter lets you know our theme for the week, word wall words to practice reading and
spelling, and what is happening in reading and math.
We have been working on training our students to work independently in Daily 5. Daily 5 consists of: Work on Writing, Word Work, Read to Self, Read to Someone and Listen to Reading.
Daily 5 reinforces skills we have learned while challenging them to work at their own level.
We have already started working on “Jolly Phonics”. The program begins with review sounds
and will continue to introduce different sounds each day. With the new sound there is a motion that helps the kids associate the sounds. The program emphasis is “brain based learning”.
We will begin working on Topic 2 in math, Addition and Subtraction Facts within 10.
Information on homework will be coming soon.
It was great to meet all of you at Meet the Teacher Night. Thank you for your cooperation
with our many requests. We look forward to working with you to make this a very successful
year for your child.

building blocks on the wall outside the office. Students will receive prizes at stops along the way!

Morning Flagpole Drop-off
Everyone is doing a great job keeping the line moving during our
morning drop-off. The number of teaching staff at the sidewalk
will dwindle as these teachers now have responsibilities for students
in the building. We make staff available at the start of the year to
aid in learning the routines for both students and adults. A staff
member will be at the door making sure that all
students who are getting out of cars get into the
building. Remember to pull as far forward as possible and have your student exit on the passenger
side/sidewalk side of the car.
