The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
May 29, 2016
A Letter from Our Pastor
The Grace of the Sacraments
This weekend, we celebrate the
Feast of Corpus Christi, or
technically, "The Body and
Blood of Christ". Corpus Christi (the old term) refers
simply to the Body of Christ. The Feast really
celebrates the gift of Christ in both his Body and
Blood. Last weekend, on Sunday afternoon, we
celebrated First Communion with nearly 100 young
people. As we were celebrating, I reflected on the
gift of grace which flows through the Sacraments
and the richness of our sacramental life.
During the spring months, most parishes celebrate
First Communion, First Reconciliation, and
Confirmation. It is a busy time, but a blessed time.
Our young candidates spend about six months
preparing to receive the sacraments, but it is more
than just academic preparation. To truly appreciate a
Sacrament of our Church, we reflect on its fruits. As
Catholics, we know in faith that it is in the
Sacraments of the Church that we most surely
receive grace. Grace is necessary for salvation, as
well as for our day to day living of the faith
(discipleship).
In Confirmation, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are
poured forth in the candidate’s life and soul. How
essential are these gifts of wisdom, understanding,
knowledge, fortitude, counsel, piety and fear they
seek to navigate coming to adulthood.
In our faith we draw upon these gifts to help us
make decisions, chart courses, and witness to the
faith. It begins with the reception of the Sacrament.
In the Eucharist which we celebrate today, the gift is
more ongoing. The Eucharist is truly food for the
journey. Our journey of life is going to take us
forward (and backward). We are going to have
pitfalls and predicaments, tough choices and lifedecisions along the way. As people of faith, we know
that without grace we are in some ways lost. The
grace of the Sacrament is like a beacon in our lives,
especially in difficult times. And it is readily available
for those who seek it.
The beauty of this Feast of Corpus Christi is that
Christ gave us the gift which keeps giving. When his
..
life poured out on the cross, grace poured into our
lives. It is said that the Sacramental life of the
Church began from the blood and water poured forth
from the wounded side of Christ. Take a peek at the
Divine Mercy portrait sometime: It depicts mercy and
grace in its most amazing aspect.
I can't help but wish all the best for our young people
who received these beautiful Sacraments this spring.
Their lives are filled with hope and possibilities. And
they are not alone; the grace of God has been
poured forth into their hearts and is readily available
in His Body and Blood to those who truly seek it.

He Was Filled With Pity for Her — The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Book of Kings 17: 17— 24 God is the Lord over death. And there are prophets among us, men and women of God
from whom comes the word of the Lord. Their presence and identity must be discerned, as the widow here did. Are the
words and promises of God made effective through them? Look around you, there are many more “prophets” than you might
think. They speak and make real the compassion of God.
Psalm 30: 2—6,11-3 A psalm of thanksgiving for being delivered from death. As the widow might have sung, “you changed
my mourning into dancing; O Lord, my God, forever will I give you thanks.”
Galatians 1:11—19 The call of Paul as an apostle by Jesus. He was not called, as the other apostles were, by Jesus during
His lifetime. He was called by the resurrected Christ; so, his is also a divine call. He is speaking and making effective the
word and will of God, like Elijah and like Jesus. That word is the love of God for us, no matter what, and God’s compassion;
and in doing compassionate deeds for others he is making actual God’s concern for us, each of us, no matter what. How are
you called to speak and do God’s love for others?
Gospel of Luke 7: 11—17 “God has visited his people.” Again the pity of God is expressed by Jesus’ pity for the woman
grieving for her son and his returning life to the boy. When we are in difficulty, even facing imminent death, can we hear and
heed Jesus say to us “Do not weep?” Someone great “has arisen in our midst,” dispensing the compassion of God.

WOW!
SHJ Pre-Kindergarteners’ end-of-the-year field trip
took them to the WOW museum in Lafayette for a
morning of exploration and dramatic play. Among the
attractions: boarding a pirate ship; digging for dinosaur
bones; and using technological equipment in a bank, a
clinic and a grocery store. A big hit: engaging pulleys
and weights to lift chairs and make giant bubbles. It all
wrapped up with the children’s performing a selfdirected dance on stage – complete with tap shoes,
princess dresses and action figure costumes.
Thank you, parents, teachers and students for a
wonderful pre-school year!
