THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY
The Octave Day of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday, therefore points us to the merciful love of God,
and the forgiveness of sins, that lies behind the whole Paschal Mystery – the whole mystery of the
death, burial and resurrection of Christ – made present for us in the Eucharist. In this way, it also
sums up the whole Easter Octave. As Saint John Paul II pointed out in his Regina Caeli address
on Divine Mercy Sunday, 1995: “the whole octave of Easter is like a single day,” and the Octave
Sunday is meant to be the day of “thanksgiving for the goodness God has shown to man in the
whole Easter mystery.” http://www.divinemercysunday.com/pdf/The_Octave_Day_of_Easter.pdf

Second Sunday of Easter
April 3, 2016
Once I was dead,
but now I am alive forever and ever.
— Revelation 1:18a
Gospel reading (John 20: 19-31)
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples
were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with
you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced
when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent
me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive
the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are
retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So
the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails
in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week
later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and
stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my
hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered
and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen
me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of
his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.
Brief commentary
This Sunday we conclude the Octave of Easter; eight days in which the ‘Day of the Resurrection’ radiates its light
in our lives. Every Sunday beyond today is an echo of Easter Sunday, resonating throughout the Church and
throughout the universe. The power of Easter vanquishes fear (the Exultet) as evidenced in today’s gospel, as the
disciples’ fear is replaced by a greeting of peace from the risen Lord. The fruit of the cross and resurrection is the
Gift of the Spirit, breathed upon the disciples as divine life, making them ministers of the reconciliation that Jesus
Christ won by his victory. It is the fruit of Divine Mercy that we joyfully celebrate this Sunday, a mercy that ever
sustains and strengthens, pardons and restores, enlivens and renews, the Church and the world. The Christian is
one who can exclaim, as did the disciples, “We have seen the Lord!” Yet, faith is not without its tests and trials. In
Thomas we are able to recognize with humility how in need we all are of God’s grace to ignite and embolden our
belief and our faith. In a world that often ignores, or is skeptical of, the Presence of the One who moment by
moment wills and sustains our very being, faith empowers us to trust and to give the gift of ourselves to God
wholeheartedly. In this “Year of Faith,” declared by Pope Benedict XVI, we have witnessed the historic
resignation of a pope and the election of a new Successor of Peter, Pope Francis. With joy and gratitude to God in
our hearts, we see how the Church witnesses to the powerful presence of the Risen Lord in her midst, renewing
her life and re-confirming her in her evangelical and apostolic mission in the world. This Easter Season the Lord
sends his Spirit upon us as he did on his first disciples; he sends each of us as messengers of reconciliation in a
world that tends to distance itself from God and from love of neighbor, and he calls us to believe with boldness in
the One we call “My Lord and my God!” Happy and blessed Easter of the Resurrection of the Son of God, our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ! Halleluyah…Jesus Christ is risen, and we have life in his name!
Today’s reading offers three significant messages:
For our shared or personal reflection:
♦ The gifts of the risen Christ are peace and the Spirit.
These dispel fear and doubt.
♦ Empowered by the Spirit of the Risen Lord, the disciples
are sent as ambassadors of forgiveness and
reconciliation. The Church is at the service of
reconciliation through her sacraments – particularly
Confession – as well as through her efforts at dialogue
among peoples, and in each of her members’ efforts
throughout society.
♦ Faith enables us to believe without seeing, and to be
intrepid witnesses of the Risen Lord in our Church and
world.
After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or
feelings.
1. What does the presence of the Risen Lord accomplish
in my life?
2. How am I being a ‘minister of reconciliation’ in my
family, church, workplace, community?
3. How do I witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ?

a vosotros.”
Jesús repitió: “Paz a vosotros.
Luego dijo a Tomás: “Trae tu dedo, aquí tienes
mis manos; trae tu mano y métela en mi costado; y no seas incrédulo, sino creyente.” Contestó Tomás: “¡Señor
Mío y Dios Mío!” Jesús le dijo: “¿Porque me has visto has creído?
apostólica en el mundo. Esta Pascua el Señor envía su Espíritu sobre nosotros tal como a sus primeros discípulos;
