JUSTIFICACIÓN In the last century, a great deal of attention has been given to the area of applied linguistics. Its importance is becoming more evident since it is helping our society to solve different problems in different areas. This course aims at providing students of the English Language Teaching program with a general perspective of the history and development of Applied Linguistics, state of the art knowledge about and insights on Applied Linguistics and the various subdisciplines in this field. The subdisciplines to be addressed are Language Policy and Planning, Second Language Teaching and Learning, Cross-cultural Communication, Bilingualism and Multilingualism, Language and Technology among others. In this Applied Linguistics course, theory and practice will be intertwined so as to help teacher-trainees to solve problems especially those related to language. 3. COMPETENCIAS 3.1 Competencias Generales By the end of this course, students must have a clear picture of what applied linguistics is. Similarly, they should be able to discuss and share ideas about applied linguistics and its subdisciplines with others. Likewise, learners must be able to propose solutions to social problems, especially those related to the learning and teaching of a second language. 3.2 Competencias Especificas Students successfully completing this course should be able to: Master the vocabulary of the field Give a clear concept of applied linguistics Talk about the main areas of applied linguistics Use the knowledge of the field in their academic practice Propose solutions to problematic situations in ELT Propose solutions to social problems based on the knowledge and insights acquired in applied linguistics. 4. OBJETIVOS 1. To understand Applied Linguistics and its subdisciplines as a means to solve social and language problems in different contexts and situations. To reflect upon theoretical foundations of Applied Linguistics in relation to the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language -TEFL - in our educational context. 3. To develop students’ critical reading abilities in order to reflect and innovate their own educational process 4. To analyze and discuss about exiting national and international language policies 5. To explore cross-cultural communication theory to get a clearer understanding of different cultures/communities and their language (s) 6. To learn about the use of technology, especially computers, mobile technologies and the Internet in language learning and teaching. 7. To reflect on and understand bilingual and multilingual education. 8. To learn about Amazonian Languages 9. To discuss about the importance of Amazonian Languages 10. To propose solutions to protect and revive endangered Amazonian languages 11. To explore critical discourse analysis theory/practice to get a clearer understanding of it. ESTRATEGIAS METODOLÓGICAS This course will be taught in English. In all lessons, topics/areas related to applied linguistics will be addressed. These areas will be explored through students’ participation - class discussions, individual assignments, group assignments, presentations among others. When class discussions are being carried out, interrupting (politely) to ask questions is highly encouraged. It is mandatory to read the materials for class discussions, presentations and other activities well in advance. Practical tasks related to the course will be considered as well. The teacher will be a guide and a facilitator during the semester. Trabajo presencial: Lectures, Presentations, videos, class discussions and tasks. Trabajo dirigido: Preparation for presentations and tasks, fieldwork, assignments. Trabajo independiente: Readings, searching for specific information, fieldwork and assignments. 7. RECURSOS Monolingual dictionary, web and digital material, Library books, photocopied sources, audiovideos, video beam, computers, cellphones, TVs, Lab (when available) and Internet. EVALUACIÓN In order to value teacher-trainees work, this Applied Linguistics Course will follow the norm of the University to provide 70 percent first and 30 percent at the end of the semester. 70%: To be reported on November 13th, 2015 Participation Class Activities-Quizzes/Discussions Oral Presentations Response Journal (letter to the author (s)) 30%: To be reported on December 2 nd, 2015 Final Assignment (Oral presentation and Essay)-Fieldwork Total: 100% The works are due in class on the dates proposed, no extensions. *Class Attendance Class attendance is the student's responsibility. They are responsible for everything covered in class. This includes details about the tests or papers, and graded activities. Therefore, I strongly advise class attendance. In the extremely rare case of an emergency which prevents contacting the professor prior to the test, presentation or class, do it as soon as possible. Do not wait until next class or the end of the semester. Any student with unjustified absences/no-attendance equal or superior to 20%, will be graded with (0.0) as final grade. 9.
