Ushers needed at the 11 a.m. Mass
Today’s Scripture

Everything belongs to God
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns
the Persian King Cyrus, called the Lord's "anointed."
Cyrus deserves this title because he ended the Babylonian captivity of the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us
that it was God who gave Cyrus his power. He may be
a great king, but "I am the LORD and there is no
other," says God (Isaiah 45:5).
Today's Gospel is also concerned with worldly
power. In the passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try
to trick Jesus into speaking against the emperor. His
famous answer is the perfect reply. Like the kings of
old, Caesar can be given the respect due his position,
but everything belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all
who are faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He,

Treasures from our Tradition
When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council
met to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were
required to draw up a new rite, including several
forms. The hot button for debate was so-called
"general absolution," by which a penitent could be
absolved of sin without confessing to a priest. This
was a difficult debate, compounded by widely varying
traditions in both East and West. Some were surprised
to learn that the Holy See had already given permission, during the First and Second World Wars, for this
form. In 1944 the Vatican issued a decree saying this
form was valid under extreme conditions, which bishops in mission lands and Latin America took as a kind
of "blanket permission."
Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to
find this practice fairly widespread, not only in war,
but in peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful
and few priests. Although they eventually produced a
ritual with three different forms, the forms are not
considered equal, and the enriched and revised individual form is preferred. The enrichments include a
welcome of the penitent, a sign of the cross with an
encouragement to trust in God's compassion, new
texts rich in the Word of God, praise for God's mercy,

What are our ushers doing? The October Mass Count!
Each October our Diocese asks that we count attendance at every
Mass. Every weekend this month our ushers will be counting the number of people at all of our Saturday night and Sunday Masses. We give
these numbers to the Diocese.

Procession in honor of Our Lady of Fatima. During October, the
month of the Holy Rosary, our Legion of Mary will be having the
Rosary Procession every Saturday (after the 8:30am Mass)

Do you like to SEW? We need your help.
We invite you to join our friendly group of ladies who enjoy sewing. The purpose of our group is to help meet the needs of the elderly
and the handicapped. We also do special projects.
We make colorful lap-sized quilts, senior bibs, walker and wheelchair bags, as well as other useful items. Sewing machines are available
for group use. Please drop by and see what we have and what we do.

Installation of Fr. Gilberto Escobedo
as Pastor of St. Boniface Church
Bishop Kevin Vann will be installing Rev. Gilberto Escobedo as pastor for St. Boniface Church on Sunday, October 19th, 2014 at the 5:00
p.m. Mass. Fr. Gilberto was a past vicar at our parish and he would like
to extend an invitation to our parishioners for this event. Refreshments
will be served in the parish hall after Mass.

Proposition 47 on the November ballot, The Safe Neighborhoods and
Schools Act. The initiative has wide reaching impact both fiscally and

Thanksgiving Concert
World Mission Sunday today
Tickets on sale today
Please join us for “ALL GOOD GIFTS, a Thanksgiving Concert” for
the benefit of the Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries’ Crusade against Human Trafficking and Prostitution in the Philippines. It will be an afternoon of
celebration filled with Sacred Chorale pieces and traditional Filipino music,
featuring the Holy Family Filipino Chorale
The concert will be in O’Connor Hall at St. Justin Church at 1 p.m. on
Saturday, November 15. Tickets are $20 each and will be available under

The Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries is a religious community from
the Philippines. Through their “Home of Love” center they rescue and rehabilitate women and children who are victims of prostitution and human trafficking in the Philippines. To prevent children from being recruited into prostitution they have the Regina Coli Educational assistance program for the very
poor high school students. At present they have 3,000 high school beneficiaries. One hundred percent of the proceeds of this concert will support the
MQHM programs and services.

Discernimiento apunta hacia el futuro. La tarea del
Consejo Pastoral Parroquial es de discernir el mejor
camino que tomar para el futuro.
La buena noticia es que como Iglesia ya sabemos
cuál es el futuro; es de estar para siempre con el Señor
Jesucristo en el cielo. El camino que debemos tomar
está definido por las circunstancias de nuestro tiempo.
Esto incluye el entendimiento de las Escrituras (La Biblia), las enseñanzas de la Iglesia, la historia de la Iglesia y del mundo, los acontecimientos actuales y movimientos sociales.
Aquí es cuando la oración y el escuchar vuelven al
proceso de la tarea del Consejo Pastoral Parroquial.
Traemos en nuestras oraciones las esperanzas y necesidades de los parroquianos y escuchamos a lo que el
Señor tiene que decir. El discerniente se hace a la luz de
las Escrituras, enseñanzas de la Iglesia y la participación de los miembros del Consejo.
También existe una necesidad de vigilar contra el
engaño. Nuestros pensamientos e ideas son influenciados de una manera muy grande por diferentes fuentes.
Las familias con las que crecimos han influido en la
manera en que pensamos. La historia de nuestra vida
persona es otra influencia. La sociedad donde vivimos
influye nuestras ideas. Los libros que leemos y los programas que vemos también son influencias. Todas las
cosas del mundo nos están influyendo a pensar y participar en el mundo. Los caminos del mundo no son los
caminos de Dios. Es por eso que debemos estar vigilantes para no ser engañados.
El cristianismo siempre ha sido un equipo de deporte. El nombre de nuestro equipo es “Iglesia”. No
llegamos al cielo por nuestra cuenta. Es lo que se hace
en unión. Discerniendo el camino que llevaremos es el
único camino seguro. No es como si no tuviéramos un
mapa. Tenemos las Escrituras, las enseñanzas de la
Iglesia. Así como con cualquier mapa, puedes ver cual
camino debemos de tomar, pero los detalles no son incluidos. Tenemos que decidir cómo seguir adelante en
contra de los obstáculos y así movernos en la dirección
correcta.

Hoy estamos celebrando El Día Mundial de las Misiones, que organiza el Consejo Pontificio de la Propagación
de la Fe, es un día especial para que los católicos renueven
su compromiso con la acción misionera de la Iglesia a
través de su oración y sacrificio. Como dijo san Juan Pablo
II, el Día Mundial de las Misiones, “es un día importante en
la vida de la Iglesia porque nos ensena a dar: es una ofrenda
hecha a Dios, en la celebración Eucarística, por todas las
misiones del mundo”. Estas son las misiones donde cada
día los misioneros, sacerdotes, religiosos, arriesgan sus
vidas cada día y algunos incluso la entregan en martirio,
para llevar el Evangelio a os pobres y necesitados de todo
el mundo.

Reflexiones para la homilía
Somos los hijos de un gran rey
Se han fijado alguna vez en las figuras que hay en las monedas? En
cada país puede que sean distintas, pero normalmente llevan efigies de los
líderes de la nación, en la historia o incluso en el presente. No es que las
monedas les pertenezcan exactamente a ellos, sino que son del país que
representan. Jesús les dice a los fariseos que den al Cesar (es decir, a lo que
representa el Cesar) lo que es suyo, ya que lleva su imagen, y a Dios lo que
es de Dios. Es decir, a Dios, lo que lleve la imagen de Dios. Y, ¿que lleva
la imagen de Dios? Ciertamente, no las monedas de metal, pero si las monedas vivas que son todas sus obras. “Hombre y mujer los creo. A imagen
y semejanza suya los creo…” (Gen 1). Toda la creación lleva el sello de
Dios, pero sobre todo los seres humanos, creados a su imagen y semejanza.
¿Qué puede significar esto para nosotros? El estar hechos a imagen y semejanza de Dios quiere decir que tenemos una dignidad especial, como de
“elegidos”, como nos dice la carta a los tesalonicenses de hoy; como de
hijos amados y herederos del Reino de Dios. El ser hecho a imagen y semejanza de Dios tiene muchas consecuencias. En primer lugar, reconocer
que llevamos la imagen de Dios es reconocer a quien pertenecemos. Si
pertenecemos a Dios, no podemos “quedar mal” a la familia y, por lo tanto,
nuestro comportamiento debe reflejar nuestra identidad. La definición de
Dios es amor. Si Dios es amor, nuestras obras deben reflejar amor, compasión, solidaridad, misericordia.
Por otro lado, el ser de Dios, hechos a su imagen, nos da una enorme
dignidad. Como decía una vez una mujer pobre y sencilla: “yo estaba atemorizada, triste y encerrada en mi casa. No sabía ingles y todo en este país
se me hacia nuevo y distinto. Hasta que un día me di cuenta de que era hija
de un gran rey….” Esto cambio su vida y salió al mundo y a su comunidad
dispuesta a servir y caminando fuerte y con la cabeza alta y convirtiéndose
en líder de la comunidad. Somos hijos de rey, sacerdotes y profetas por el
Bautismo.
Reconocer en nosotros mismos la imagen de Dios también nos obliga
a reconocerla en otros, que también son hijos de Dios y llevan su imagen.
Por tanto, cualquier ofensa a la dignidad de otra persona nos tiene que doler como propia, porque tal persona es hija de Dios y hermana nuestra. Es
decir, que los atentados a la dignidad de los inmigrantes, los trabajadores,
los pobres, los niños que entran solos en el país, nos tienen que doler profundamente y movernos a la acción. Los hijos de Dios, creados a su imagen, tienen que mantener el honor de esa imagen, la limpieza de esa gloriosa imagen de Dios en todo lo que Él ha creado. Supone, pues, luchar por la
justicia y el derecho. Y supone, sobre todo, respetar la imagen de Dios en
todas sus criaturas. Eso incluye el cuidado de la creación; el respeto al
derecho ajeno; unas relaciones de paz; el decir no a la violencia domestica
y a lo que manche en nosotros mismos la imagen de Dios: todo atentado
contra la vida y la salud propia, y la integridad de nuestro propio cuerpo.
Somos elegidos y esa es una gran gloria, porque hemos sido llamados
“con la eficacia del Espíritu Santo y con fruto abundante”. Con un fruto
que de Dios viene a Dios pertenece. Esa es la moneda de Dios en material
mucho más duradero que el metal o el papel. Esa es nuestra vida.
Isaías 45:1,4-6
La palabra ungido, que en este pasaje se refiere a la relación del Señor con Ciro, alude al acto de verter aceite sobre
la cabeza de una persona elegida para cumplir una misión
particular de parte del Señor. Con este acto se consagraba a
los reyes, a los sacerdotes y eventualmente a alguno de los
profetas y así se los capacitaba confiriéndoles el Espíritu
del Señor para el ejercicio de su misión. Aunque Ciro no lo
conocía, el Señor por amor a su pueblo en el exilio lo llamo
por su nombre y le dio un titulo insigne. Así que se pondrá
de manifiesto que el Señor es el creador de todo y que los
triunfos de Ciro y la caída de Babilonia son frutos de la
voluntad divina.
1 Tesalonicenses 1:1-5
La acción de gracias recuerda y refuerza el vínculo que une
al equipo misionero con la comunidad de Tesalónica. Pablo
hace de su oración una evocación de la relación establecida.
Así se afirma el triple vinculo (Dios, la comunidad, el grupo misionero) que le da sentido a todo el escrito. Es una
memoria que se expondrá en la carta, destacando una
común vocación. Esta memoria va a funcionar como presencia constante de Pablo y como ejemplo de la acción
apostólica. Afirma que la asamblea cristiana de los tesalonicenses es participe de ese proyecto misionero.
Mateo 22:15-21
Los partidarios de Herodes Antipas formaban el reducido
grupo de los judíos adictos a la dinastía herodiana. Como
esta dinastía era de origen extranjero, y siempre había tratado de mantener buenas relaciones con el poder imperial,
cabe suponer que sus secuaces aceptaban el pago del tributo. Aunque los herodianos estaban habitualmente en Galilea, podían haber subido a Jerusalén con ocasión de la Pascua. Los fariseos, por su parte, no se sometían incondicionalmente a la dominación romana. La presencia del dominador pagano profanaba la Tierra Santa y atentaba contra la
soberanía de Dios sobre Israel; pero rehusaban el recurso a
la violencia y esperaban la liberación, no de la rebelión
armada, sino de una intervención divina. A pesar de estas
divergencias, ambos grupos se habían puesto de acuerdo en
un punto preciso: querían que Jesús diera un paso en falso
para desacreditarlo ante el pueblo.
Nuestra cultura
Hay en la cultura hispana un profundo sentido de dignidad
personal. A los niños se les inculca el respeto y también su
sentido de identidad como parte de una familia a la que “no
se puede hacer quedar mal”.
