From our Pastor... “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” In today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Saint Peter is amazed at what he sees happening before his eyes: the pagan people are coming to faith in Jesus Christ. In fact, the pagans receive the same Holy Spirit that the Apostles received on the day of Pentecost. We may be used to the fact that Christianity is a world religion, that there are people who belong to the Church from every nation of the world. But the entrance of the pagan people into God’s chosen people was a new thing for the first generation of believers. Jesus was a Jew. His first disciples were Jews. They saw Christianity as the fulfillment of the hope of the Jews. There is an analogous question, though, that is very urgent in the hearts and minds of people today: How can we say that the Church is the one, true Church? How can we say that Christianity is the way? Wouldn’t it be more humble to say that the Church is one church among many churches, and that Christianity is one way among many ways to God? I would suspect that most Catholics would take this position. It is obvious that holiness and truth exist outside the boundaries of the Catholic Church. Sometimes our non-Catholic brothers and sisters live a far more heroic version of faith than we do. Sometimes members of other religions show greater love than we do. How can we say that the Church is therefore the Church? These are difficult questions to answer, and we should feel them in their profundity. But I would like to give us a pointer, drawn from Peter’s words in the Acts of the Apostles. The insight is simply this: the Holy Spirit does work outside the confines of the Church, and that work is leading somewhere, or rather to Someone, Christ. Peter’s recognition of the Spirit’s work outside the boundaries of what he thought was possible led him to allow the pagans to receive Baptism. Baptism is the Sacrament that makes us members of the Body of Christ. The ancient Fathers of the Church used a phrase that can be very helpful to us: “All truth is Christian.” That is, Jesus Christ is the Truth. All the truths of the world, of science, of philosophy, of the world religions, find their origin in Jesus Christ. All the truths of the world find their Truth in Him. This insight should help us to be confident as we approach people who think and live in a different way. It should help us to be confident in the work of the Holy Spirit, who often in roundabout ways is leading and guiding all the people of the earth. But that does not make us indifferent! Because the Holy Spirit is leading the world and everyone in it to Someone, to Jesus, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge,” (Colossians 2:3) and to His Bride, the Holy Catholic Church. Employment Opportunities Christ the King School is looking to hire several specialty staff positions for next school year. ♦ Health Assistant 18 hours/week. ♦ Art Masterpiece Lead Teacher 10 hours/week. Interested applicants may inquire and send their resume to [email protected] Last week I was a substitute adorer one afternoon. There were already two adorers in the Chapel that I would be relieving as well as a couple of other adorers. During the hour I was there, seven other adorers were there for at least part of the hour, which is a wonderful testimony of how in love the parishioners here at Christ the King are with the Lord. Does this mean that it was not necessary for me to be there? No indeed, the purpose of a scheduled adorer to be present is to assure that at no time the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed without an adorer present. We want at least two adorers to be scheduled each hour in case one cannot be there for some reason. If you look at the ‘colored faces chart’ posted at the Chapel and Church entrances or on the parish websites (www.cancershrine.org/adoration) you’ll notice most hours do have at least two adorers, but there are hours with only one adorer. If you are able please choose an hour of the week to spend with the Blessed Sacrament. Please contact Dick (602) 300-8562 or [email protected]. St. Peregrine Healing Mass Please join Father Matt for the St. Peregrine Healing Mass on May 13 at 7:00 pm in the church. The First Class Relic of Saint Peregrine will be present for veneration. Come experience emotional and spiritual healing as our Lord provides strength for the journey. For more information, please contact Anthanette Donaldson at (480) 844-4478 or [email protected]. Music: Jake Ineck © 2013 The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. We must lay down our lives! It's more than raising our hands, it's more than singing this song. It's saying "yes" to the Giver of life, it's righting the ways that are wrong! It's more than shouting God's name, it's more than singing his praise. It's bringing forgiveness to injury's wound, and hope to those imprisoned by shame.
