Peter was often precocious and overconfident and often spoke out without thinking. And so he said: “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Perhaps many of us were like that at the beginning of our conversion. We are confident that we will be able to follow Jesus faithfully, to suffer with Him and even become a saint capable of miraculous deeds. I was like that when I was fourteen years old and decided to become a priest. My way of rebelling against my parents was to become extremely pious and to think myself holier and smarter than they were. So I told Jesus: “Call me to come to you on the water.” Jesus will accept even imperfect motivations and so He said to me “Come.” But, of course, I have since discovered that without the Lord’s strong helping hand, I am not capable of being a holy priest of God. Just like Peter, I saw how strong the headwinds can be and began to sink. But in His mercy, Jesus “stretched out his hand and caught (me) and said ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” I need daily prayer in order to receive reassurance and strength. This scripture passage is one of my favorite Bible stories. Many times I have experienced that when Jesus climbs into my boat, the wind dies down and there is a great calm. Early on, I began to pray a holy hour every day in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. I began to pray the rosary every day. I experienced what St. John Bosco saw in his famous dream: our boat will be saved from the storm if we tie up to the two pillars which are the Eucharist and devotion to Our Lady. Please remember to pray for me and for all your priests. St. Joseph’s Parish welcomes your Like St. Joseph’s? children to our Parish School of Religion (PSR) !!! Gradually over the centuries the Holy Spirit has guided the church toward a fuller understanding of Our Blessed Mother. There have been four Marian Dogmas defined by the Church: The Divine Maternity of Ma Mary’s Perpetual Virginity The Bodily Assumption of Mary into Heaven The Immaculate Conception of Mary August 14, will be the Feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe. He was executed at Auschwitz on August 14, and so presumably his body was incinerated the following day. His smoke and ashes wafted up to heaven on the Feast of his beloved Immaculata. St. Maximilian had a great devotion to the Immaculate Conception. During the past few centuries there have been many saints and miracles and apparitions and it seems to me that almost all of them relate somehow to The Dogma of Immaculate Conception. It seems that God has been trying to convince the world of the importance of this fact that Mary is uniquely important, because she was conceived without any stain of original sin. God has been sending Mary down from heaven to teach us this. Many saints have proclaimed it. Many miracles have confirmed it. There are beautiful wonderful stories that you can read about by visiting our parish library or by searching the internet. Here is a partial list of key words that you can use to search for these stories related to The Immaculate Conception: Our Lady of Guadalupe; The Apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe (she appeared on the 15th on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception); The Apparitions of St. Catherine Laboure (1830); The Miraculous Medal; the conversion of Alphonse Robispierre; The Apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes; The Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima (emphasizing on The Immaculate Heart of Mary); Concepcion Cabrera Claude Newman; Immaculee Ilibagiza. Respect Life Corner RCIA Inquiry classes are for people who want to learn more about Catholicism, but aren’t necessarily sure they want to become Catholic. Page 5 - August 10, 2014 Youth Ministry Contact Us! From our Holy Father in Rome But who do you say I am? The Pope repeated that, in order to know Jesus, “what is needed is not a study of notions but rather a life as a disciple”. …..we come to know him “in the daily encounter with the Lord, each day. Through our victories and through our weaknesses”. It is precisely “through these encounters” that “we draw close to him and come to know him more deeply”. For it is “in these everyday encounters that we acquire what St Paul calls the mind of Christ, the hermeneutic to judge all things”. Yet the Pope explained that “it is a journey that we cannot make alone”. Therefore we come to know Jesus “as disciples on the path of life, following behind him”. But this “is not enough”, the Pope said. In reality, this “is a work of the Holy Spirit, who is a great worker: he is not a union organizer, he is a great worker. ... he is always at work in us: and he carries out this great work of explaining the mystery of Jesus, and of giving us the mind of Christ”. She studied psychology and became a licensed marriage and family therapist. She has spent many years counseling individuals, couples and families. But Jeanette says that she was not always close to God and to the Church: “For most of my life I was serving the community by belonging to service organizations; however, I was not responding to God in serving the Church.” Then in 2005 she went on a pilgrimage with Fr. Bill McDonald to Italy and Austria. This experience enkindled a fire in her heart for the Church and so she decided to begin serving as a lector: “It was during the pilgrimage I felt the ‘heart on fire’ feeling to give back to the church and proclaim.” Jeanette served as lector first at St. Stanislaus Parish and in 2010 , became a registered parishioner at St. Joseph’s where she now serves as lector and as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. Jeanette feels grateful to God and is now motivated to share her newfound faith even in her daily life as a therapist. Jeanette says that “In sessions with clients, they often bring up or are open to having conversations about faith especially in times of crisis.” Now that Jeanette has been serving responsibly in the parish, she feels more confident when she speaks to people about God. Congratulations Jeanette for becoming a good steward and for sharing the gift of faith and proclaiming the Word of God to others!
