PRIEST’S COLUMN
M
y dear Parishioners,
Peace! There are ten (10) "In Brief" articles in the Catechism of the Catholic Church addressing the
Eighth Commandment of the Decalogue, ‘You shall not bear false witness.’ The following is a
reflection on CCC 2512.
The Eighth Commandment, ‘You shall not bear false witness’ has a multitude of implications, not only that we
should not lie, but also that we should tell the truth, value and love the truth. Even more, the Eighth
Commandment enjoins upon us a respect for liberty and justice both of which are founded upon truth.
Our lives in society, in common with others, requires that we be truth tellers. How could a court of law
administer any justice, giving each what is due, without any true witnesses, any true testimony? The Lord Jesus Christ assures us
that He is the way, the truth, and the life and that the truth will set us free (cf. John 8:32; 14:6). Whenever we sin, however we sin,
we reject God, His call to holiness, His grace. Whenever we repent our sins and are well confessed we reject the devil, the glamour
of evil, and receive God’s great and everlasting mercy.
"Yellow journalism" or the "yellow press" is an abuse of communication, which seeks to sell newspapers, books, advertisements
through hyped-up, eye-catching headlines and teasers, with lurid features and sensationalized reports without any or much honest
research. Such scandal-mongering now is not limited to tabloid print media but extends to radio, television (cable or satellite), and
internet outlets alike. Without accurate reporting how are citizens to make well founded judgments which will affect their lives in
society, with others?
Propaganda was used for very ill effects in Nazi Germany in the distortions and lies told by Paul Joseph Goebbels (+1945), Julius
Streicher (+1946) in Der Stürmer, and even by Adolf Hitler (+1945) himself in Mein Kampf. The "newspaper" Pravda in the USSR
and Granma of the Cuban Communist Party come to mind as do the tabloids National Enquirer, The Sun, and The Globe in
America, The Mirror, The Sun, and the Daily Star in the UK. God forbid we spend all our time reading such drivel.
Read real news and have fodder for prayer. Give thanks for what is praiseworthy. Beg mercy for what is wicked. Intercede for
those in need. If all we do is become absorbed in questionable media forms we waste our lives. Moderation in the use of social
communications is required. How else will we carve out time for family, for faith, for honest work??? Both moderation and
discipline are required as we "consume" social media. Without such virtue we become vicious and our society follows suit. The
Founding Fathers of the United States recognized the importance of a free press in the First Amendment to the Constitution as being
a great bulwark of liberty which can help to keep government from becoming despotic. For freedom we have been set free (cf.
Galatians 5:1).
God bless you!
Father John Arthur Orr
OUR LORD’S “PACT” WITH SISTER FAUSTINA: YOU CAN HELP BRING DIVINE MERCY TO A DYING SINNER
Our Lord directed Sister (now Saint) Faustina to “[w]rite that when they say this chaplet [of Divine
Mercy] in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person not as the just
judge but as the merciful Savior . . . . Be assured that the grace of eternal salvation for certain souls in
their final moment depends on your prayers.” (Emphasis added.) Some thirty Catholics in the area
have signed up to say the chaplet at Tennova Hospice, Ft. Sanders Hosp., or one of three nursing homes,
all of which, it is logical to assume, house many in their last days. This is not a group thing or even a
couples’ ministry – it is simply many undertakings by many individuals, each of whom acts as his or her
conscience dictates in deciding how many locations and dates to select. They record their selections in
advance at http://vols.pt/fr883y. We are presently in the process of more than doubling our hospital and
nursing home locations. An individual can say the chaplet (it takes about 12 minutes) while sitting in
his or her car at a nursing home. We need more volunteers. Will you consider attending an
informational meeting at All Saints Parish Hall at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26? The meeting
should not last more than an hour. Please RSVP by August 24 to Miriam Mangers at 692.0980 or
[email protected] or to me, Judge Susano, (at 567.2140 or [email protected]. Our Lord has
promised many graces for those who spread the Divine Mercy message.
Are you looking for a way to develop your spirituality? Consider joining the Secular Franciscans and following Jesus and
the Gospel in the spirituality of St. Francis. It is open to practicing Lay Catholics, men and women. The Secular Franciscans are a
canonical order of the Church. The Sts. Francis and Clare Secular Franciscans will hold an “Informational Meeting” at St. John
Neumann Church in Farragut at 3:00 PM on Sunday, September 20, 2015. Regular formation meetings are on the third Sunday of
each month, beginning October 18th at 1:30 PM. The Fraternity Meeting is at 3:00 PM. We meet in the Ann Seaton Hall at the
Church. “Come and See” if this is for you. For more information, you may contact one of the following Members: Janette Irwin at
(865) 591-6444, Terry Paradis at (931) 788-6512, Pat Johnson at (865) 933-6751, Addie Lackovic at (865) 494-9282, Paul Rock at

A Special Parish Mission The Enthronement of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus
Father Dowling invites you to
this very special parish mission
beginning Thursday, September 17,
7-8:30pm; Friday, September 18, 78:30pm; Saturday, September 19, 45:30pm and culminating with the
Enthronement Ceremony during the
8am Mass on Sunday, September
20. The Enthronement of the Sacred
Heart is a beautiful devotion to the love that Jesus gives to
us as we honor and return His love through our daily lives
The ENTHRONEMENT of the Sacred Heart means the
Official and Social recognition of the loving Kingship of the
Heart of Jesus in the Christian family. The family shows
this recognition by giving the image of the Sacred Heart a
place of honor in the home and dedicating itself to Him by
an act of consecration. In this way the family is brought
under the benign influence of the Divine Heart, which
asserts itself in all the events of family life. It’s about peace,
forgiveness, reconciliation and love. What could be more
important to our parish family in these times in which we
find ourselves? Jesus wants to transform our hearts and give
us a new beginning. It is so important that we are calling
every parishioner. Please plan to come with family and
friends. Know that we are praying for you. Visit our web
