yet covered with forests of large growth.
Tite lands borderÍng tho Lakc above San Carlos
are rich and oifer excellent positions for agriculturists
to 10cato thcir claims. Boarderíng tite river San
Juan bclow, 01' cast of San Carlos, the ground is l.ow,.
and subject to overflow, but back from tite river it
rises gradually, effering s()mc of the finest positions

Tlle favorable location too, being at the junction of
the Laktland Uivel', ancl past which must fiow the
tide ofCommeleeand emigl'ation, now just beginnillg
as it were, to paur into the Uepublic, must eoon
make San Carlos a city of first importance. ThQ Rio
Frio ;deb.enches into tlle Lake within one thous&l1d
yards of the "Punta Plaza" and soutlwast of it.This river swarms with fislt, and thewatcr is very
lUuch colder than that of either the Lake or river.
'l'he 1slands in the Lake affordample supplies of
wood· and timber for every purpose. It is intended
by the government to open a road from BanOarlos
into thEl mining region of. the headwaters of lndian
river, and as this must pass near the San Miguelets,
that entil'e country, so rieh in cattle and horses, will
be opened to the markets of the Lake, aÍld as soon
as the Lake is supplied with. steamers and sailing
vessels, the region ar.ound San Carlos must becomc of
immense value to the State, and lands of ever~' des-.
cription attain great value. There is no part oC tite
State in whiGh 1 could so heartilYl'ecommend settlers
to lpeate their land permits as in this, and 1 willingly
