Gospel reading ( Luke 9: 18 - 24)
Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples
were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I
am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah;
still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’” Then he
said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in
reply, “The Christ of God.” He rebuked them and directed
them not to tell this to anyone. He said, “The son of Man must
suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests,
and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”
Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he
must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever
loses his life for my sake will save it.”

Un día Jesús se había ido a un lugar apartado para orar, y
estaban sus discípulos con él. Les hizo esta pregunta: “La
gente, quién dice que soy yo?” Ellos contestaron: “Unos
dicen que eres Juan Bautista; otros, Elías, y otros, que eres
alguno de los profetas antiguos que ha resucitado”.
Entonces les preguntó: “Y ustedes, quién dicen que soy
yo?” Y Pedro respondió: “Que tú eres el Cristo de Dios”.
Jesús les prohibió estrictamente que se lo dijeran a nadie.
“Porque - les decía - el Hijo del Hombre tiene que sufrir
mucho y ser rechazado por las autoridades judías, por los
jefes de los sacerdotes y por los maestros de la Ley. Le
quitarán la vida y al tercer día resucitará”. Después Jesús
dijo a toda la gente: “Si alguno quiere seguirme, que se
niegue a sí mismo, que cargue con su cruz de cada día y que

Today’s reading offers significant messages:
♦ The disciples of Jesus must be ready to follow in
his steps, taking up their cross daily.
♦ When we claim to believe that Jesus is the Christ
we must also be aware of what that implies. There
is no resurrection without suffering and there is
no suffering without the promise of resurrection.
♦ We are challenged to give up old ways of thinking
and being and to open ourselves to the
vulnerability of discipleship.

The Church is a “communion of saints”: this expression refers first to
the “holy things”, above all the Eucharist, by which “the unity of
believers, who form one body in Christ is both represented and brought
about” (LG 3). (CCC 960)
The term “communion of saints” refers also to the communion of
“holy persons” in Christ who “died for all,” so that what each one does
or suffers in and for Christ bears fruit for all. (CCC 961)
… “Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix
the whole Church more firmly in holiness… they do not cease to
intercede with the Father for us, as they proffer the merits which they
acquired on earth through the one mediator between God and men,
Christ Jesus… So by their fraternal concern is our weakness greatly
helped” (LG 49). (CCC 956)
… “In full consciousness of this communion of the whole Mystical
Body of Jesus Christ, the Church in its pilgrim members, from the very
earliest days of the Christian religion, has honored with great respect
the memory of the dead, and ‘because it is a holy and a wholesome
thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins’
she offers her suffrages for them” (2 Mcc 12:45). Our prayer for them
is capable not only of helping them, but also of making their

“We believe in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who
are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed
in heaven, all together forming one Church; and we believe that in this
communion, the merciful love of God and his saints is always

Questions for discussion:
• What are the holy things you think the faithful – living and
dead—share as common treasures?
• How do you understand that everything that we do, good or
bad, that we enjoy or suffer, affect all Christians?
• Think about your relatives, friends or acquaintances that are
dead, do you feel that in spite of their death and the time
passed, you still have ties with them? Explain your
feelings.
• Among the saints familiar to you, is there any of them that
you would have loved to know and be friendly with him/
her? Why? Do you think you can still get closer to that
particular saint in prayer and have he/she as a role model
for you to follow in your life?

La Iglesia es “comunión de los santos”: esta expresión designa
primeramente las “cosas santas”, y ante todo la Eucaristía, “que significa
y al mismo tiempo realiza la unidad de los creyentes, que forman un solo

• ¿Cuáles crees tú que son las cosas santas que compartimos
los fieles, vivos y difuntos, como tesoros en común a
todos los cristianos?
• ¿Cómo entiendes el hecho de que todo lo que hacemos de
bien o de mal, gozamos o sufrimos afecta a todos los
cristianos?
• Piensa en familiares, amigos o conocidos que han muerto,
¿sientes que a pesar de la muerte y del tiempo
transcurrido, aún tú tienes lazos que te unen a ellos?
Explica tus sentimientos.
• Entre los santos que son familiares para ti, hay alguno(s)
que te hubiera gustado conocer y tratar? ¿Por qué? ¿Crees
que aún tú puedes unirte a ellos en la oración, en el
