New Administration Team and Arena Check-In
Welcome back! As you are enjoying your last summer days, click on the website
link for the required summer reading for every single student (aka The BIG READ)
and for additional reading for those students enrolled
in advanced standing and Advanced Placement.
Because belonging is a primary focus to start our From Principal
school year, WHS conducts summer reading that Diane Burbank
everyone one on campus completes. The energy that
will result out of reading the same titles and participating in the same book discussion groups helps me set the academic tone and the
emotional momentum for the school year for students and for staff. In true WHS
fashion, these titles were selected by student voice. Hard copy books and e-books
are available for check out from WHS library and the public library.
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell (nonfiction with case studies that
shed light on how people achieve success)
Breaking Through by Francisco Jiminez (follows last summer’s
most popular Big Read selection, The Circuit)
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (read this scary one with a flashlight!)
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (don’t settle for seeing the
movie!)
I am welcoming some veteran Wildcats to administrative positions. They bring a wealth of positive
history with and knowledge about our students and
campus to their new positions. New AVP Wendy
Porter (administrative vice-principal) will be working with student last name M – Z alongside veteran
AVP Alvaro Calderon working with student last
names A – L. New Athletic director Chuck Velschow and assistant athletic director Erin Kilty will be working with our student
athletes. All their offices are in the admin building near the bus circle.
Read elsewhere in the Communicat about the teachers new to WHS. The larger
teaching staff is due to enrollment growth of about 100 students (approximately
1900 total enrollment), teachers “graduating” to

Bienvenidos! Mientras disfrutan sus últimos días de verano, visiten la página web para ver la lista de los libros que requerimos que todos los estudiantes lean (conocido como The BIG READ) y
para la lectura adicional de los estudiantes
que estarán tomando clases avanzadas. Por- From Principal
tenido logros)

WHS was named a Qualigia Demonstration Site in 2014
LEADERSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Making your own decisions and accepting responsibility for those choices
Plan on using the Infinite Campus parent portal throughout the year to stay current with your student’s performance and
attendance.

Infinite campus (IC) pre-Arena Check-in. Please log in to IC to complete the mandatory online portion of
Arena Check-in. We are not accommodating any additional course changes at this point in time. Class schedules will not be available through IC, nor will they be mailed. Students will receive their 2014-15 class schedule
when they successfully complete Arena Check-in, which will be held in the new gym.
SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE:
Being excited to try new things, even when you are not sure if you will be good at them
High school is a time for exploration, so it's important to do just that. Join clubs, athletic teams, volunteer, and get involved in other school activities. How else will you know what you're good at or what you enjoy if you don't try new
things? Meet with your guidance counselor early in the year, and as often as necessary to learn about new opportunities,
and give them a try.
Your student’s assigned guidance counselor is listed on the official schedule received at Arena Check-in. Although you
are welcome to telephone, you may find it convenient to reach your student’s guidance counselor by email: The Guidance Office reopened on August 1, 2014.

CONFIDENCE TO TAKE ACTION:
Setting goals and taking the steps to reach them

It is very important that you keep in contact with your student’s teachers. You may contact a teacher by email
or by leaving a voice mail message any time you have a concern or question about a course or your student’s
progress. It’s best to contact the teacher first before calling a guidance counselor or administrator. Use the Infinite Campus parent portal to stay current with your student’s performance and attendance.

Students who need intervention classes will be enrolled in a 7-period day.

All students should be putting in a minimum of one to two hours of quiet study every evening. Help your student organize a time and place for consistent study periods.

It’s Never Too Soon to Start Planning Ahead
Important News from the College and Career Center
This Woodside school year is all about dreaming big (but
staying sensible). Some students dream of being admitted to a very selective university, some dream about being
the first in their family to go to college, some dream of developing their artistic talents in big cultural centers like San
Francisco or New York, some dream of learning specific
skills necessary for their careers, and some dream of playing their sport with a new team in a new place. No matter
what you’re hoping for in the future, the best way to turn
dreams into reality is to work very, very hard. The College
and Career Center is here to support all of your efforts. It is
packed with resources to help transform your goals into
your achievements, and it’s an especially good place to find
information about:

There is help for all of the

above. If you are applying
to fouryear colleges, you will have a scheduled,
required meeting with the College Advisor in September. You can also make an
individual appointment or just pop by
the C&C Center with questions anytime. Additionally, on Wednesday, September 17 there is a March Into College
workshop for seniors and their parents;
all application questions will be answered then. On the 17th (and throughout the semester), the following ideas will be repeated a
lot. Applications are not commitments. They are opportunities. If you think a four-college might be the best place
for you, and you’ve done serious research to make sure that
the schools are a good fit, don’t hesitate. Apply. Then in
April, you will have options as you decide what your path
will be after graduation. It’s always good to have choices.

News From The PTSA
Mentor Opportunities
Welcome back Wildcats! In this first edition of the 2014-15
Communicat, you will find a great deal of useful information
so take a few minutes to look through and find out what will
be going on as we kick off the year.
Want to make a difference in a
teenagers life? Had a mentor
that impacted you? Know someone else who could help?
The PTSA supports parents, teachers and students mostly
through supporting events and programming at Woodside.
Believe it or not you are still wanted and needed as a volunteer even though your student is in high school. The Communicat, the Woodside website, and other school communications are great resources for finding areas that might interest you or your family. If there is something that interests
you, by all means jump in!
The academy programs at
Woodside High School could
use your help. The Academy is
a small learning community
made up of dedicated teachers
working collaboratively. There
are two academies at WHS, the
Business Technology Academy
and the Green Academy. During their Junior year, students
may request a Community Mentor that works with them on
both academic & career goals. There are many students and
their career interests are widespread, ranging from fashion
and nursing to engineering and information technology.
The PTSA generally meets once a month on the first Tuesday in the MUR. Meetings begin at 7:00 pm and we work
hard to wrap them up by 8:30 pm. We will be working to
update our PTSA information TAB on the Woodside High
School website which can be found under Parents/
Community. In the meantime if you would like to find out
more or get involved, please feel free to email me directly [email protected] . We will be kicking off our 2014-15
membership campaign during Arena Check-In where you
will also have a chance to meet many of our PTSA volunteers in person. Finally, the PTSA relies solely on eScrip
and direct donations to fund our programming. When you
join, please consider making an extra donation if you can
toward our General Fund which supports
Student Scholarships, Parent Education,
and Seasons of Sharing.
Have a wonderful year!

Got Robots?
Is your student interested in building things?
Team 100 and
Team 4800
Robotics
Check out the Robotics Clubs at Woodside – Team 100 (larger, 120 pound robots),
Team 4800 (smaller, table-top robots). Both teams enter competitions sponsored by
FIRST Robotics (usfirst.org). Through participation, students discover the value of education and careers in science, technology, and math.
Robotics isn’t just about robots and engineering. It is much like a startup company – people with many different
types of skills are needed. Your student can get a head start on their 21st century careers while still in high schoollearning the technical and people skills that will be in high demand in the coming decades.

Computer savvy? We have CAD, programming, website and animation.

Interested in electronics and wiring? – Robots don’t work without their brains attached.

Social Media whiz? – There’s web and graphics design, blogs to update, Facebook and Twitter updates to
keep our robotics fans informed.

Future CEO? – Keep our robot budget on track and attract sponsors, all the while developing business and
marketing skills.

Photography or Filmmaking in your future? – Document the intensive build season culminating in competitions that rival the best competitive sporting events.

High tech Manufacturing Dreams? - Learn to operate all the equipment in the Woodside Engineering class
shop including the mill, lathe, drill press and welding.
Some added benefits to being part of the robotics teams:

Work one-on-one with industry mentors.

Many college scholarships are available for students on FIRST teams.
Team 100 builds big robots with a corresponding big team, including students
from Woodside, Carlmont, and Sequoia High School. Team 100 meets weekly at
Woodside High School in room H-8 on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Work sessions are held after school and on weekends at WHS, room G-2. See team100.org.
Team 4800 enters the FIRST Tech Challenge and provides a hands-on experience
that is ideal for those new to robotics. Work sessions are held after school in room
G-2.
Parents – are you intrigued, too? The team relies on the support of volunteer mentors to help prepare the next generation of technology-savvy students.
All are welcome to join. Check us out and talk to our members. For more information, contact the Woodside faculty advisors, Arlene Kolber, [email protected] David Shannon, [email protected].

and Basketball games? You will be getting requests throughout the year to donate product and/or to volunteer your
time to sell concessions. Please help us out be replying to these requests promptly! We need everyone to support this
task and another big thank you to Cathy Krampert for taking on the task of leading this effort!
We also want to get word out that we are looking for a parent to be the adult liaison with the Junior class officers for
homecoming. Homecoming will be here before you know it and we need a parent with a large Flatbed trailer and
a place where the students can store and decorate their homecoming float. Please send me a note if you can help
out with this task.
Please watch the emails for our Parent Group Socials and Meetings!
