Dwight’s Message “Sunday is the Lord’s DAY; not the Lord’s HOUR!” Brothers and sisters, Fr. Dwight asked me to write the message for this week. We are about to enter the great and holy season of Lent. But what is Lent about, really? We give things up, we put change in our Rice Bowls for Catholic Relief Services, we don’t eat meat on Fridays (hopefully not so we can feast on lobster!), we fast (hopefully not just in the hope of losing some weight!). We might go further and seek to make some positive virtuous change in our life, or to root out some sinful habit. Still, even then, we aren’t reaching the heart of Lent if we leave it there. Lent isn’t primarily about self-improvement. It is always surprising to me that the two most attended liturgies in the United States besides Christmas and Easter are Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday. Often it is said that this is because these are special days where people ‘get’ something. I’m always left scratching my head in wonder, because don’t people realize what they can ‘get’ at every Mass? That every time the priest invites the faithful to come forward for communion we are invited to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus? That we are being allowed to become part of his Body? We are offered, at every Mass, the greatest gift that ever was offered- Jesus Christ himself! This, this is the real meaning of Lent: not ashes, not palms, not practices, but Communion: communion with God in Jesus Christ, and through that, communion with one another. This is why we do everything that we do in the Church: to build communion. In Lent we make a special effort to get rid of the things that stand in the way of that communion- both with God, and with other people. That is what our Lenten practices are for. Besides your regular Lenten practices, I especially challenge everyone in the parish to make room in our busy and noisy world for some intentional stillness and silence this Lent. God speaks to us most profoundly, and most clearly, when we make ourselves available to listen. During Lent we also journey in a special way with those among us who are preparing to enter the Church at Easter, either those seeking baptism, or those who are already baptized and preparing to enter into full communion with our Church. Pray for them! Welcome them! Let them know they are loved! Let us give them an example of the communion they are preparing to experience! In the early Church, many pagans were drawn to Christianity, saying, “See how these Christians love one another!” Today, sadly, that quote is more often used sarcastically. Imagine what could happen if strangers encountered our parish family and were drawn in by our example of love! -Michael Schmitz P.S. Since Fr. Dwight so graciously gave me this first page in the bulletin this week, I couldn’t resist taking the opportunity to put a few youth group announcements at the front: Youth Group Updates! Call me at the parish office, ext. 103, or email me at [email protected]. God is never outdone in generosity! From our Holy Father, Pope Francis Vatican City, Feb 10, 2015 / 01:23 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- In his homily Tuesday, Pope Francis said that Christians must have a certain “restlessness” if they want to know God, who is not found by staring at a computer, but rather by going outside of oneself. “Sedentary Christians, lethargic Christians will not know the face of God: They do not know Him,” the Pope told attendees of his Feb. 10 daily Mass, which took place in the chapel of the Vatican’s Saint Martha guesthouse. “You need a certain restlessness to set out on this path, the same restlessness that God placed in each of our hearts and that brings us forward in search of Him.” The Pope spoke of the right and wrong paths that Christians can take when searching for the origins of their own identity. When looking, it is important to note that the image of God cannot be found “on a computer, or in encyclopedias,” he said. Rather, the only way to find the image of God and understand one’s own identity is to “set out on a journey,” Francis said.
