HOLY WEEK
For the Palm Sunday Gospel, we return to the Gospel according to Mark. The account
of the Passion takes up nearly one-third of Mark’s entire Gospel and, of all the evangelists, he is the one who presents the details most graphically. He depicts the humanity of Jesus most intensely, describing his sufferings thoroughly. Mark portrays Jesus
as a complete fulfillment of the “Suffering Servant” of Isaiah, the obedient, humble
slave dying on a cross of whom Paul speaks in Philippians. But it is important to remember that we call this “Holy Week” and not “sad week” or “suffering week,” for
each of the readings today, even the lamentations of the psalm, end in the promise of
the strength and hope that is granted by God to those who faithfully give of themselves
in love. As we enter into this week through these readings, we must reflect deeply on
the sufferings of Jesus, but still be confident in the joy of risen, eternal life that awaits
all of us who faithfully walk with him through these days. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Although the procession with palms has an unforgettable grip on our imagination, the
real emphasis of this day’s liturgy is contained in its name: The Sunday of the Lord’s
Passion. Since 1955, the old custom of a blessing of palms with procession of the people
has marked the entry of the Church into a time so rich that it is called “Holy Week.” The
center of today’s liturgy, however, is the solemn reading of the Passion, this year taken
from Mark’s Gospel. Our community is to be transformed by its celebration of Easter,
and so this week everything is made new. Soon, the bishop will celebrate the “Chrism
Mass” when the holy oils for the sacraments will be completely replenished and blessed,
and transported from the cathedral to every parish. Easter is the first Sunday after the first
full moon of springtime. Be on the lookout later this week for this “paschal” moon, rising
in the east at the precise moment the sun sets in the west. Imagine: a day when there is
not a single moment when the earth is not bathed in light from the heavens. We are on
the threshold of the three great days (Triduum): Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, beginning
at sunset on Thursday when the parish gathers in response to the Lord’s command: “Do
this in memory of me.” —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
SEMANA SANTA
Presenta a Jesús
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos‑Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Faith Formation...
Jesus, the humble village carpenter, frequently attracted large crowds with his preaching. A moment of apparent triumph and glory came when these same people in Jerusalem acclaimed him as king, probably hoping he would be a new military leader and
overthrow the occupying Romans. This “triumph” was brief, however. In a few days
the same crowds turned on him. Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, didn’t know
what to make of him. Jesus was obviously no common criminal. He spoke truthfully
and was not cowed in Pilate’s presence. Yet Pilate finally gave up and had Jesus put
to death. Ever since that first Good Friday, those who pass through the darkest nights
know they don’t go alone. For each of us Jesus obediently and willingly entered the
pain and sorrow of humanity. He counted the milestones along the way of despair,
and fell into the abyss of death. There are no dead-end streets anymore. For us, at the
end of every road, there shines the light of Christ. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All

ANNUAL MINISTRIES APPEAL (AMA) 2012: Thank you to the 134 families who have already pledged $34,607.24 to
support the mission of the diocese and the parish to teach, preach, minister and serve in the name of Jesus through their financial contribution to the 2012 Annual Ministries Appeal (AMA). We will bring our appeal to an “official” close at the end of
the month. If each family participated by pledging $250, in addition to supporting the many diocesan ministries, we could
cover the cost of our new carpet and still make a sizable reduction in the debt that remains on the Cislini Youth Center. No gift
is too small … or too large! If you have not yet made your pledge, you may do so over the next few weekends (drop in the
collection basket or mail them to the parish office (22 Stone St., Salinas CA 93901). Pledges may be paid in full or over eight
(8) months. If using an envelope other than the pledge envelope, please clearly mark it AMA (if enclosing cash … please put
your name, address and phone number on the envelope). One important change on the pledge envelope – on the line that says
“Parish Name” please write in the following: Sacred Heart Church – 426.

Rancho Cañada Golf Club in Carmel Valley and enjoy a wonderful auction dinner and awards presentation. If you don’t golf, come
have fun at the auction dinner. All proceeds of the Bishop’s annual event benefit the Tuition Assistance Fund for Diocesan Schools.
The students who will receive these funds are among those with the greatest need in the four counties of the Monterey Diocese:
Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito and San Luis Obispo. New this year -- for your travel convenience -- we have 3 hotel partners
for special and discounted rates! For event times, registration and hotel information, and our growing list of auction items, go to
www.dioceseofmonterey.org or contact Mimi Schwertfeger at the Department of Catholic Schools (831) 645-2802;
[email protected]. There are many opportunities for sponsorship and donations!

Thank you to everyone who helped make the St Patrick’s Day Dinner/Dance a success!! We would like to especially thank the committee: Gwen Gorman, Kathy Bullene, Linda Hoffman, and Marilyn Portschy for all of their hard work and effort. We appreciate the help
given for set-up and clean-up by volunteers Marina Acosta, Lorenzo and Patty Nava, and Ryan Smith. We also thank Chuck DeBord
and the Knights of Columbus for the excellent dinner, Zeph’s One Stop for their donated salads, Mike Hackett/Casa Sorrento for the
beer and wine, Mission Linen for supplying the tablecloths and napkins, Praxair for the helium, and Danilo Arboly for helping with odd
jobs throughout the evening. We are grateful to Star Market for their advertising, and for the basket that was donated for our raffle.
Other baskets were donated by the Central Coast Pediatric Dental Group, the Sherwood Tennis Center, Manzoni Winery, the Altar Society, the Pastoral Council, the Finance Council, Martha’s Helpers, Catholic Daughters, and the Italian Catholic Federation. The music
provided by The Anthony Lane Band was excellent. If you missed it this year, mark your calendars now for next year – you don’t want
to miss it again!
