Sunday: Twenty‐third Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Labor Day Tuesday: The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Wednesday: St. Peter Claver Friday: Patriot Day Saturday: The Most Holy Name of Mary; Blessed Virgin Mary STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
Today’s Gospel from Mark includes an extraordinary occasion when Jesus cured and healed a man who had been unable to hear or speak. In the process of healing him the Lord said one word — Ephphatha, a word that means “Be opened.” In a homily given in the fall of 2012, Pope Benedict XVI stated: “At the heart of today’s Gospel there is a small but very important word, a word that in its deepest meaning sums up the whole message and the whole work of Christ. It is the Aramaic Ephphatha.” The Holy Father went on to point out that many are inwardly deaf to the world around them and remain mute at a time when the world is in need of spiritual guidance. The Pope’s meditation on that Gospel and that one important word also included a reminder that the Lord speaks to each of us in a language of love, and calls us to be bap‐
tized disciples. The man in the Gospel had been isolated and insulated from the world around him. We may tend to be that way at times also. Jesus calls us to see our vocation in human society, and to strive to be good stewards of that vocation. In closing his homily that day, Pope Benedict prompted us what our response should be: “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3: 10) Is 35: 4‐7A; Ps 14: 6‐10: Jas 2: 1‐5; Mk 7: 31‐37 San Jaime / San León

Doors open from 8:00 am through 11:00 am. $7.00 per adult, $4.00 for children 12 years and older. The beneficiary from this Breakfast is the Eudist Seminarian Fund. The Eudists provide pastoral care for Saint James‐St. Leo Catholic Community, Saint Patrick in Carlsbad and St John Eudes in Chatsworth without any financial support from a Southern California diocese. Since priestly vocations have not been recruiting at a pace sufficient to supply priests for all of the parishes in our Diocese, supporting our Eudist seminarians is a critical need. Our own parish has experienced the benefits of supporting Eudist seminarians in the past, as anyone who has participated in celebrating sacraments with Fr. Ernesto, Fr. Juan, Fr. Lawrence and Fr. Ricky will recall. This upcoming Breakfast allows our parishioners to share a meal with one another as we lend our assistance to this very worthy cause. PASTORAL STAFF
