Ortonville employee Brian Ulrich demonstrates the effects of being out in the sun all day without sunscreen or a long-sleeved shirt. As you can see, the result is a nasty, stinging red burn on his skin. Let’s be sure to kick off the busy season with sun safety in mind. This goes hand in hand with staying hydrated. All plant sites and offices should have plenty of drinking water available. Be sure to review emergency procedures and the early signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The symptoms of heat cramps are muscle pain, cramping, spasms and heavy sweating. If you or someone you observe exhibits these symptoms, take the following steps: Stop the activity and go to a cool place and hydrate immediately. Avoid strenuous activity for a few hours to prevent further exposure to possible heat exhaustion. Stretch out any cramps that may be occurring. The symptoms of heat exhaustion are heavy sweating, fatigue, cramps, headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea and vomiting. If you or someone you observe exhibits these symptoms, take the following steps: Stop the activity and go to a cool place and hydrate immediately. If necessary, remove outer clothing. Cool down with a wet cloth on the forehead and body. Be prepared to call 911 if you do not observe improvement. If not treated, these symptoms could progress to heat stroke, which is a very serious condition. Let’s all be aware! When out in the heat and sun, wear sunscreen or a long-sleeved shirt and stay hydrated.
