Even though we have recently observed a whole month dedicated to Black Catholic History, it is well for us to take time to reflect on and celebrate Black History — something so rich and rewarding for both the older and the younger generations. MONDAY, TUESDAY , THURSDAY and FRIDAY 7:30 a.m. : Living and Deceased Passionist Benefactors WEDNESDAY, 7:30 a.m. and SATURDAY, 9:00 a.m.: Communion Service The PARISH ASSEMBLY Originally scheduled for this Sunday, January 25th, the Parish Assembly has been postponed until Sunday, February 22nd.—the First Sunday of Lent. Be sure to mark your calendars. Today, I want to share some thoughts with you about the importance of family life and the threats that imperil its health. First of all, the family is the basic unit of society and Christians are called to consider their families “domestic churches.” If anything worthwhile is to happen in the church and in this world, it has to begin in the family, for it is here that the heart of civilization beats. But we live here and must look after our own house before setting out to help our neighbors repair and strengthen theirs. Among the more devastating threats to healthy family life is individualism because it strikes at the heart of the common good. We can easily recognize this illness in others but self recognition is often elusive. A family member who concentrates too much on self fails to contribute his or her share toward the wellbeing of the others. Whereas the considerate and reliable family member stands as a solid pillar supporting a structure of charity, harmony and peace. It takes faith and courage to consistently resist the temptation to focus on self. But look around, and you will find abundant evidence of this throughoutj our faith community. One of the joys of serving St. Paul of the Cross Parish is that of being with families who treasure one another. Let us pray today that all our families, young and old, will never lose that precious gift. - Fr. Jerome, C.P. ONE MAN’S EXPERIENCE! “Although my wife and I are both involved in various ministries at our parish, we are usually on separate tracks. Since we found ourselves in the same small community I have noticed a difference in our sharing at home. We are each reading Scripture more and very naturally discussing this with each other as well as within our group at our weekly session. I never thought it would make a difference in our lives but I’m finding it has. I encourage you to join a small community this Lent and enter into the faith sharing on Lenten Longings. I believe that once a week for six weeks will be well worth your effort.” CONSECRATED LIFE From the beginning of the Church, there have been men and women who have chosen to live in a radical witness to Christ by imitating him as closely as possible in his poverty, chastity, and obedience. In the course of the centuries, this commitment became more and more visible through the establishment of monasteries, religious orders and congregations, and other types of institutes. Men and women professed publicly evangelical “counsels” (vows) of poverty, chastity, and obedience and committed themselves to stability of life within communities. The priests and brothers who have served St. Paul of the Cross parishioners for the past 60 years are members of the religious community known as the Passionist Congregation, founded in 1720. P. Alberto, C.P.
