Forgiveness
Shared by Cynthia Reyes
Since this year is the Holy Year of Mercy, I thought I would share some things on forgiveness that was given to me at
a Forgiveness Seminar. Yes, that is correct, I attended a Forgiveness Seminar, and here are some memorial points
made:
Forgiveness is primarily a gift that one gives themselves and secondarily a gift that one gives another. Forgiveness opens the door for the possibility of reconciliation; it does not presume that it necessarily will conclude in
reconciliation.
Misconceptions about forgiveness:
Forgiveness can be rushed
Forgiveness is a weakness
To forgive is to forget
Only large matters are issues for forgiveness
Forgiveness is easy
One doesn’t have to forgive if the other person doesn’t deserve or want to be forgiven.
Obstacles to forgiveness:
Ongoing abuse
Self blame or inadequate sense of self
Separated geographically
The person is dead
Need to forgive God
Need to forgive an institution, Church, government, society or group
Forgiveness is a process that must be respected. It involves prayer, reflection, ritual, and difficult emotional
engagement.
Steps of Forgiveness:
Admit the hurt
Admit and work through the resentment.
Choose to forgive and bless the other person.
Seek to be reconciled as the Spirit leads you.
Mercy for oneself or for another must be accompanied by forgiveness. Mercy and Forgiveness do not stand-alone;
each must be incorporated in our everyday life, and may be measured by our actions.

Ms. Jacklyn Gonzalez is our new hire and will assume responsibilities on

Masters of Arts in Theology and a Bachelor of Arts in Theology/Religious
Studies, both from the University of San Francisco. She is an alumnus
from Santa Clara High School, and was once our parish evening receptionist. Please stop by her office and extend a warm welcome.
The parish community would also like to thank Sr. Gladis Lemus and
Martha Rodriguez who have helped during this interim time to ensure the
ongoing religious education of our students. We are deeply grateful for
stepping in to help.
