Yet Jesus’ commandments are not new. It makes one wonder how the common wisdom got to be so common. Pastor: Fr. Doan T. Pham Associates: Fr. Daniel M. Martinez Fr. Yes, that is correct, I attended a Forgiveness Seminar, and here are some memorial points made: Forgiveness is primarily a gift that one gives themselves and secondarily a gift that one gives another. Forgiveness opens the door for the possibility of reconciliation; it does not presume that it necessarily will conclude in reconciliation. Misconceptions about forgiveness: Forgiveness can be rushed Forgiveness is a weakness To forgive is to forget Only large matters are issues for forgiveness Forgiveness is easy One doesn’t have to forgive if the other person doesn’t deserve or want to be forgiven. Obstacles to forgiveness: Ongoing abuse Self blame or inadequate sense of self Separated geographically The person is dead Need to forgive God Need to forgive an institution, Church, government, society or group Forgiveness is a process that must be respected. It involves prayer, reflection, ritual, and difficult emotional engagement. Steps of Forgiveness: Admit the hurt Admit and work through the resentment. Choose to forgive and bless the other person. Seek to be reconciled as the Spirit leads you. Mercy for oneself or for another must be accompanied by forgiveness. Mercy and Forgiveness do not stand-alone; each must be incorporated in our everyday life, and may be measured by our actions. (Este articulo será traducido en Español la próxima semana.) Halloween is also an important time to go over safety rules. Tell your kids to stay with the adults when they’re trick-or-treating, and to keep with the group when they go up to neighbors’ doors. If you are the adult responsible for the group, make sure you know exactly who is in your group, and what they’re wearing. For more Halloween safety tips, visit http://www.safekids.org/tip/halloweensafety-tips.
