What is the Triduum?
The Paschal Triduum, also called the Holy Triduum or Easter Triduum, begins the evening of Holy Thursday,
and ends the evening of Easter Day. It commemorates the heart of our faith: the death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ.
The word Triduum comes from two Latin words (tres and dies) meaning “ a space of three days’ but since we
have four days with special names – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday the three
days may be confusing to some. The confusion is cleared up when we understand how the three days are
reckoned. On all high festival days the church counts a day in the same way Jewish people count days and
festivals that is from sundown to sundown. Thus, the Triduum consists of three twenty-four hour periods that
stretch over four calendar days. Therefore Easter Triduum begins at sundown on Holy Thursday with the Mass
of the Lord’s Supper which we will celebrate here at St. Linus at 7:30 pm and concludes with Easter evening
prayer at Sundown on Easter Sunday. It’s high point is the celebration of the Easter Vigil. I hope you are all
able to join us for the Easter vigil on Saturday at 8pm where we will welcome 13 new Catholics into the
church. You will not want to miss the most Holy Night.

Environment Committee is looking for helpers!
The Environment Committee is looking for volunteers to help decorate the
church for the Easter Season.
We will begin on Saturday, April 3rd at 9am and set up the stage outside
and decorate both the inside and outside of church. We need lots of helpers. So please, if you have an hour or two that you can spare, please lend us
a hand to make St. Linus beautiful as we celebrate our Lord’s resurrection.
EASTER FLOWER OFFERING
Every Easter season our church is adorned with beautiful Easter Lilies and many of them are donated by our
generous parishioners. If you wish to donate an Easter Lily in honor or in memory of a loved you can find
flower offering envelopes in the pews. Please print on the envelope the name of the person you would like
remembered and return it in the collection basket. Thank you for helping to make St. Linus beautiful during
our Easter Season.

In our celebration of Palm Sunday, the Catholic Community of St. Linus Church has partnered with Catholic
Relief Services Fair Trade to use eco-palms—a branch truly worthy of praising our God.
indigenous communities at risk
More than 300 million palm fronds are harvested each year for U.S. consumption alone—most of them for
Palm Sunday. Yet for the communities who harvest these plants year after year, palm fronds rarely represent
jubilation. Although U.S. palm purchases may reach as high as $4.5 million each year, the palm harvesters
themselves earn very little. Indigenous families and communities, who rely heavily on palm harvesting for
income, represent the poorer segments of the rural populations in the palm-producing areas of Mexico and
Guatemala.

Typically, palm harvesting is done by community members hired by local contractors, who then sell palms to
large floral export firms. Payment is based on volume, so harvesters are motivated to gather a large quantity of
palms without regard for quality. As a result, up to half the palms harvested are usually discarded due to poor
quality. Many palm producing areas are important biosphere reserves, and the harsh harvesting techniques are
rapidly depleting the forest’s rich biodiversity.

Catholic Relief Services has partnered with Lutheran World Relief to help build support in the U.S. for
eco-palms by introducing parishes to this social and environmental justice project and as a way to walk
humbly with the Lord in justice and right (Micah 6:8).
Eco-palms are harvested in a more sustainable way—harvesters are paid on the quality of their palms rather
than the quantity. These communities are also committed to using harvesting practices that minimize the
impact on the natural forest.
Eco-palm harvesters and community members sort and package the palms themselves and sell their palms
directly rather than relying on middlemen. In this way, eco-palms improve local communities’ standard of
living and ensure that the money paid for the palms benefit those who labor.
As we raise our branches today for Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we play an important role in
protecting forests, local jobs, and sustainable livelihoods in harvesting communities.

En nuestra celebración de Domingo de Ramos, la Comunidad Católica de San Lino se
ha asociado con Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade para usar ecopalmas– una palma
digna para la alabanza de nuestro Dios.

Más de 300 millones de hojas de palma son cosechadas cada año para el consumo en Estados Unidos
solamente – la gran mayoría para el domingo de Ramos. Sin embargo, para las comunidades que recogen estas

palmas en USA pueden alcanzar hasta $4.5 millones al año, los cosechadores de la palma reciben muy poco en

In the land where Our Lord Jesus Christ chose to be born, where the ultimate loving sacrifice was made by his
dying on the cross, and where his glorious resurrection took place...a desperate cry for help can be heard. For
many centuries, the Franciscan Custody of the holy Land and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of
Jerusalem have been charged with the protection of Christians and the care of our holy shrines, including the
Tomb of Christ. On Good Friday, a special collection is taken up worldwide for this very important

(Meeting of the Risen Lord and His grieving Mother)
A Filipino Easter Sunday Tradition
You are all cordially invited to be a part of the celebration of the “SALUBONG” at St. Linus Church on
Sunday, April 4, 2010, at 6:00AM. Witness the memorable tradition of the reenactment of the meeting
of the Risen Christ and His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, for the first time after His resurrection
from the dead. Experience the angels’ songs as the grieving Mary’s deep sorrow turns into joy upon
meeting her Risen Son and her veil of mourning is lifted by the Easter Angel. A procession leading to
the church will follow where the 6:30AM mass will be celebrated.
After mass, let us continue the glorious celebration of Christ’s resurrection with food and fellowship at
the Parish Hall. Thank you.

Padre Rubén Rocha
El padre Rubén Rocha es un Pastor Asociado de la Iglesia Católica St. Athanasius en la ciudad de Long Beach.
El pertenece a los Augustinian Recollectos y obtuvo su título de Maestría en Teología en la Universidad de
Seton Hall en Nueva York. Después de haber emigrado desde Guadalajara, el Padre Rubén vino a los Estados
Unidos para buscar trabajo; pero en lugar de hacer eso, el respondió a la llamada del Espíritu Santo a servir el
viñedo del Señor.
El Padre Rubén cree que nosotros como Cristianos somos “Un solo Pan, un solo Cuerpo, todos los que
participamos de un solo pan”- esto es un recordatorio de que la Eucaristía no es solo para el alma de cada
hombre, si no para la unidad del Cuerpo Místico del Señor.
El Padre Rubén es el Director Espiritual de los Grupos de Oración Carismática en Español en la región de San
Pedro. Venga, y traiga a su familia y amistades, para que juntos vivan el poder Pentecostal de sanación del

Holy Thursday, April 1, 2010 7:30pm
The Roman Missal, which is the liturgical book that contains the texts and rubrics for the celebration of the
Mass, tells us that on Holy Thursday the preparation of gifts should be more than merely setting the table and
taking up a collection. The rubrics specifically invite people to come forward with their donation in procession. This is very different from the usual Sunday collection where baskets are passed around the pews. We
will be collecting canned goods for our food pantry this day as well. The assembly will be invited out of their
pews to bring forward your gifts of food or money and place them in large baskets that will placed in the
front steps of the sanctuary. The resulting procession is a powerful symbol of the parish’s call to love and
charity and it is linked to the processions that follow in the coming days. During the procession we will sing;
Ubi Caritas et amor; Deus ibi est: “Where charity and love are found, there is God”

Saint Linus School new student applications (grades Pre-K
through 8) for the 2010-2011school year are available in the
school office between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday (except Wednesdays when office hours are
7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.).
Saint Linus School tuition is the lowest of all our neighboring
Catholic schools. In-parish tuition is currently $265 for 10
months and $295 for out-of-parish students. Families are welcome to visit the school during school hours and receive information on the comprehensive program available to students.
