Sí, exacto. I feel that we’re talking about this
island in Scotland and we’ve not even mentioned
our island in Spain where our story is set.
Carmen: Mallorca.

Mallorca, indeed. And of course if you happen to
be joining us for the first ever time, you’ll be
wondering what on earth is going on here. I’m
Mark, I’m the teacher here, theoretically and I am
here with Carmen who is our native speaker.
Carmen: Hola.
Mark:
And we’re presenting a story, a story with 40
chapters and we’re on chapter 33 today. Our
story is of course following the adventures of
Rory, Alejandro and María on the island of
Mallorca and today we’re going to be listening to
an episode where it’s an email from Rory to
Alejandro. Entonces, vamos a escuchar nuestro
texto.
Carmen: Vamos a por él.
¡Alejandro!
¿Cómo te va, compañero?
María y yo estamos bastante atareados desde que te
fuiste, en el hotel aún hay mucho trabajo, es decir,
estoy trabajando bastantes horas, menos mal que
Consuelo me trata bien. María está agotada porque
está sustituyendo a un compañero que está enfermo,
así que está haciendo dos turnos. A parte, tenemos
entrevistas con la prensa y nos han invitado a un
evento oficial el próximo viernes. Con famosos y todo.
Can you believe it? En esa fiesta habrá mucha gente

importante, harán un discurso, nos darán las gracias, y
nos darán el premio. Me han dicho que me darán una
mención honorífica. ¡Ah sí! Y tengo que decidir en
qué universidad me matriculo para hacer mi tesis.
María y yo estamos hablando de planes de futuro,
pero aún no lo tenemos muy claro, así que no sé
dónde estaré dentro de dos meses… Igual en tu tierra
natal, Argentina. Who knows! Te mantendré
informado.
¿Qué tal fue tu viaje de vuelta a Londres? ¿Y qué día
vuelves a Argentina? Creo recordar que aún os
quedan unos cuantos días de turismo por Europa.
Qué vida más dura…
Esta semana libro el sábado, y María trabaja hasta las
8 de la tarde, así que por la mañana iré prontito a
hacer submarinismo, y sobre las 12 del mediodía iré a
Palma a comprarle un regalo a María. Sé que está
enamorada de un vestido que vio en el escaparate de
una tienda de la calle Sant Miquel, y he pensado que
le hará ilusión llevarlo a la fiesta. Estará guapísima,
pibe.
Comeré por el centro y por la tarde me daré una
vuelta por la biblioteca y miraré algunas guías de
Latino América y revistas de viajes. La verdad es que
me gusta planificar los viajes y siempre leo muchísimo
antes de decidir a dónde voy. Después recogeré a
María del trabajo e iremos a cenar. Será un día
intenso, pero hay que aprovechar los días libres, ¿no?

Alejandro, ha sido un placer verte y pasar unos días
contigo, a parte de haber encontrado un tesoro, claro.
Escríbeme pronto y cuéntanos cómo te va,

Carmen: Bueno la verdad es que me da un poco de pena
que Alejandro ya no esté con Rory y María pero
bueno yo tengo la esperanza de que se
encuentren pronto.
Mark:
Yeah, Alejandro is now off in London so he’ll
need to make sure he doesn’t drive on the wrong
side of the road.
Carmen: Sí, como tú, por ejemplo.
Mark:
But let’s have a look back at our text and we’ll do
this in English. In this episode of course, we’re
reading an email from Rory to his friend
Alejandro who, as we know, has recently left
Mallorca after their exciting discovery in the
Balearic seas. Rory begins by asking Alejandro
how he is. He explains that he and María have
been pretty busy since he left. There's lots to do
in the the hotel work wise: Rory is working quite
a few hours and he's pleased at least that
Consuelo is nice to him. María is a bit worn out
because she's filling in for a colleague who is ill,

so she's actually working two shifts at the
moment.
María está agotada porque está sustituyendo a un
compañero que está enfermo, así que está haciendo

Mark:
Apart from all the work, they've also got some
other things to keep them busy too: they've been
doing interviews for the press and they've been
invited to an official event next Friday, con
famosos y todo - with famous people and
everything! There will be lots of important
people there, there'll be speeches, they'll thank
María and Rory (and Alejandro in his absence, of
course) and they'll give them their prize, their
award. They've even told Rory that he'll receive
special recognition for the discovery. Rory also
mentions to Alejandro that he has to make a
decision as to which university he's going to
choose for his PhD. He's been talking to María
about plans for the future, but they're still not
quite sure so he doesn't know where he'll be two
months from now - perhaps even Alejandro's
native land Argentina. Rory will keep Alejandro
informed. He asks Alejandro some questions
about what he's been doing since he left
Mallorca:

¿Qué tal fue tu viaje de vuelta a Londres? ¿Y qué
día vuelves a Argentina? Creo recordar que aún
os quedan unos cuantos días de turismo por
Europa.
Mark:
Alejandro went to London to spend a few days
before returning to Argentina. He's still got a few
more days of being a tourist here in Europe with
his friends before going home. Rory explains that
he's off work on Saturday but María is working
until 8, so he's going to go for a dive in the
morning and then head over to Palma at
lunchtime because he wants to buy María a
present. He knows that she loves a particular
dress that he saw in a shop window in the Calle
Sant Miquel, one of the main shopping streets in
Palma, and he thought that she'd like to wear it to
the party. While he's there, Rory will have
something to eat in the centre of town and he'll
also visit the library to have a look at some
guidebooks and travel magazines to find out
some information about Latin America. He says
that he likes planning journeys and always likes
to read lots before deciding where to go. He'll
then pick up María from work and they'll go out
for dinner. It will be a busy day, but as Rory says,
you have to make the most of your days off.

Rory finishes his email by saying that it was a
pleasure to spend a few days with his friend, not
just because they found the treasure. He asks
Alejandro to write back soon and to let Rory and
María know how things are going. Pues, muy
bien.
Carmen: Sí. Me gusta mucho.
Mark:
Muy bien, muy bien. Ok, vamos a volver a pensar
un poco a una palabra que hemos utilizado en
esta parte del texto.
Carmen: ¿Cuál es esta palabra?
Mark:
Es la palabra quedar. Remind us what you said.
There was a part where Rory had said to
Alejandro, “I think that you’ve still got some days
left”.
Creo recordar que aún os quedan unos cuantos días
de turismo por Europa.
Mark:
So “I believe I remember that you still have some
days left”, “some days of being a tourist in
Europe left”. Que os quedan unos cuantos días
de turismo. Now quedan or quedar is a little bit
tricky because we’ve got quedar and we’ve also
got faltar. And they’re sometimes two words that

mean the same thing, sometimes they have
slightly different meanings.
Carmen: Sometimes they don’t.
Mark:
Ok, let’s think about quedar first of all. How
would we say for example “there’s still lots to
do”?
Carmen: Ok, we’ll give them a minute.
Mark:
We’ll give them a minute. Perhaps not a minute,
10 seconds.
Carmen: Ok!
Mark:
Ok our listeners have had more or less 10
seconds. How would you say “there is still lots to
do”?
Carmen: Queda mucho por hacer.
Mark:
Could we say hay mucho que hacer?
Carmen: También.
Mark:
But not hay mucho por hacer?
Carmen: También.
Mark:
Ah, ok. So queda mucho por hacer. Queda gives
the idea that some of it has been done but
there’s still some left that has to be done, ok?
Carmen: Sí.
Mark:
Hay mucho que hacer just means that there’s lot
to do.
Carmen: In general, yes.
Mark:
But queda mucho por hacer means that we’ve
done some of it but there’s still lots left to do. Ok
but we can also use quedar when we’re talking
about there being time left until a particular

thing. For example, I’m thinking of “it’s a month
until Christmas”.
Carmen: Ok.
Mark:
How would we say that?
Carmen: Queda un mes para que sea Navidad.
Mark:
Ok. Queda un mes para que sea Navidad.
Carmen: And in this case, Mark, you can also use falta un
mes para que sea Navidad.
Mark:
Ok so in this case when it’s “there’s a month left”
or when there’s a period of time left, we can use
both queda and falta. Queda un mes…Could we
just say queda un mes para Navidad.
Carmen: Sí.
Mark:
So we don’t need to para que sea Navidad.
Carmen: No, you don’t need to say the whole thing.
Mark:
So queda un mes para Navidad, falta un mes
para Navidad.
Carmen: Correcto.
Mark:
So “there’s one month left until Christmas”,
queda or falta here. And let’s see therefore if our
listeners can translate something else using that
idea and just watch this because we’re changing.
It’s not one month but in this case we’re going to
be telling you it’s three days so something’s
going to happen to the verb. How would you say
- this is your challenge - “it’s three days until your
birthday?” Ok. “It’s three days until your birthday”.
Let’s use quedar.
Carmen: Quedan tres días para tu cumpleaños.

Mark:
So listen carefully again.
Carmen: Quedan tres días para tu cumpleaños.
Mark:
Quedan with an -n on the end because it’s the
third person plural. The subject is “three days”.
“Three days are left for your birthday”. Quedan
tres días para tu cumpleaños. But we could also
say here…
Carmen: Faltan tres días para tu cumpleaños.
Mark:
Faltan so using faltar in this one too but there are
some times, and this is the little bit confusing
thing here, there are some times when faltar and
quedar mean different things. I’m thinking of an
example. Let’s say a group of friends go to the
theatre.
Carmen: Ok.
Mark:
And they have booked a certain number of seats.
Can you give us two different sentences, using
faltar and quedar, describing two different
situations? Let’s think about entradas, we’re
looking at tickets, entries for the theatre. Ok, let’s
have your two sentences.
Carmen: Faltan tres entradas.
Mark:
Ok.
Carmen: Y quedan tres entradas.
Mark:
Ok, two very different situations. One in which
you’ve got a problem.
Carmen: One is positive, yeah and one is negative.
Mark:
In fact, you’ve got something to sort out in both
situations. Let’s go to faltan tres entradas. Let’s

imagine there are 10 people going to the
theatre, 10 people have turned up at the theatre.
In the case of faltan tres entradas, how many
tickets do you have?
Carmen: 7.
Mark:
7, yeah, that’s the crucial bit.
Carmen: You need 3.
Mark:
Faltan tres entradas, “three tickets / entries…”
Carmen: “Are needed”.
Mark:
“Are needed”, “are missing” in that sense. Faltan.
However, if the sentence were quedan tres
entradas, and those 10 people had arrived at the
cinema or the theatre rather, how many tickets
would you have?
Carmen: You have 13.
Mark:
You’ve got 13 because you’ve got 3 left over.
Quedan. And there’s another word that we could
also use there.
Carmen: Sobran tres entradas.
Mark:
Sobran tres entradas. So there are 3 tickets…
Carmen: Spare?
Mark:
Spare, yeah. Superfluous. Some word linked to
sobran. Ok, so think of that very carefully.
Quedan, faltan, sobran. Sometimes they mean
the same, sometimes, especially when you’re
talking about things like tickets or seats or
something like that, then you can be caught out.
You need to make sure you buy the right number
of tickets.

Mark:
Ok, let’s go back and listen to our text again, we’ll
listen to the first half now.

So Rory begins his email:
¡Alejandro!
Consuelo me trata bien.
Mark:
Ok so ¿cómo te va, compañero? “how are you
companion?”, “how are you buddy?” María y yo
estamos bastante atareados. Now we know what
una tarea is. It’s “a task” that you’ve got to do, it
could be also used as your homework as well.
Una tarea. So if we’re atareados, it means we’re
busy, we’ve got lots of things to do. Desde que te
fuiste, “since you left”. Irse, of course “to go
away”. Desde que te fuiste, “since you went
away” and he goes on to say that in the hotel
there’s still lots of work: en el hotel aún hay
mucho trabajo, es decir, estoy trabajando
bastantes horas, “that’s to say I’m working quite a
lot of hours”. Menos mal que Consuelo me trata

bien, “thank goodness Consuelo’s nice to me”,
“she treats me well” literally.
María está agotada porque está sustituyendo a un
compañero que está enfermo, así que está haciendo
dos turnos.
Mark:
So we’ve seen the word agotado, it’s linked to
una gota, “a drop” and in this case, agotada
means “worn out” or “drained”. “María is drained
or she’s worn out because she’s substituting”,
está sustituyendo a un compañero, “she’s
substituting a companion”, “a work colleague”
que está enfermo, “who’s ill”. So she’s basically
filling in for this person who’s ill. Así que está
haciendo dos turnos, “so she’s doing two shifts”,
basically.
A parte, tenemos entrevistas con la prensa y nos han
invitado a un evento oficial el próximo viernes. Con
famosos y todo.
Mark:
So, “apart from that”, “in other news”, tenemos
entrevistas con la prensa “we’ve got interviews
with the press” y nos han invitado a un evento
oficial el próximo viernes “and they’ve invited us
to an official event next Friday”. Con famosos y

todo, “with famous people and everything”. Can
you believe it?
En esa fiesta habrá mucha gente importante, harán un
discurso, nos darán las gracias, y nos darán el premio.
Mark:
So “in this party”, en esa fiesta habrá mucha
gente importante, “there will be lots of important
people”. Harán un discurso, “they will do a
speech”, nos darán las gracias “they will thank us”.
Literally, “they will give us the thanks”. Y nos
darán el premio “and they will give us the prize”,
“the award”.
Me han dicho que me darán una mención honorífica.
Mark:
Una mención honorífica is a little bit tricky to
translate. Literally it’s an “honorific mention” but
he will receive recognition for the role…
Carmen: Like, official, from the government.
Mark:
Yeah, officially recognised as the person who has
been responsible for finding the treasure and he
also remembers something else:
¡Ah sí! Y tengo que decidir en qué universidad me
matriculo para hacer mi tesis.

Mark:
So he’s also got to decide in which university to
matriculate himself, to sign up, to enrol para
hacer mi tesis, “to do my PhD”, “my doctorate”.

Mark:
Ok, quite a long sentence there. He says María y
yo estamos hablando de planes de futuro, “María
and I are talking about our plans for the future”.
Pero aún no lo tenemos muy claro, “but we’ve
still not go it very clear”, “we’re still not 100%
clear on things”. Así que no sé dónde estaré
dentro de dos meses, “so I don’t know where I’ll
be within two months”, “in the next two months”.
Igual en tu tierra natal, Argentina, “perhaps even
in your native land, Argentina”. Who knows! He’ll
keep him informed: te mantendré informado.

Obviously we’ve spoken a little already about
quedar. Let’s come back here ¿qué tal fue tu viaje
de vuelta a Londres? “How was your return
journey to London?” ¿Y qué día vuelves a
Argentina? “And what day do you go back to
Argentina?” Creo recordar “I believe to
remember”, “I think I remember”, que aún os
quedan unos cuantos días “that you’ve still got
some days left” de turismo por Europa “as a
tourist throughout Europe”. Qué vida más dura,
“what a hard life!”

Mark:
So he begins by saying esta semana libro el
sábado. Now, libro we’ve seen before. It looks
like the word for “book”.
Carmen: But it’s not!
Mark:
But in this case it’s a verb, librar. And he says libro
el sábado. Literally “I free myself”, well it’s not
really reflexive, but “I’m free on Saturday”. Librar
means “to be not working”.
Carmen: Off.
Mark:
“To be off”. So “this week I’m off on Saturday”. Y
María trabaja hasta las 8 de la tarde, “and María is

working until 8 in the evening” así que por la
mañana iré prontito a hacer submarinismo “so in
the morning I’ll head off nice and early”. Prontito.
It’s not just pronto but prontito.
Carmen: Prontito.
Mark:
“Nice and early” or “really early”. A hacer
submarinismo, “to do diving” y sobre las 12 del
mediodía “and about 12 noon” iré a Palma.
Palma being of course the capital of Mallorca. A
comprarle un regalo a María, “to buy to her a
present to María”, so “to buy María a present”.
Sé que está enamorada de un vestido que vio en el
escaparate de una tienda de la calle Sant Miquel, y he
pensado que le hará ilusión llevarlo a la fiesta. Estará

Mark:
Rory knows that María is in love with a dress that
she saw in the shop window en el escaparate that’s a great word - de una tienda de la calle
Sant Miquel. So this was a shop window in the
calle Sant Miquel in Palma. It’s a lovely street. Do
you know that street, Carmen?
Carmen: It is indeed. I know, I know. I know the street.
Mark:
Lots of good shops, lots of ice cream shops too.
Carmen: It’s better for me to be away. Seriously.
Mark:
It leads straight into the Plaza Mayor and then on
down towards the cathedral and the palace.

Perfect. Anyway, y he pensado que le hará ilusión
“and I thought that it would do illusion to her”,
“that she would love to wear it to the party”, que
le hará ilusión llevarlo a la fiesta. So let’s just hear
that whole sentence again.

Mark:
So “I know that she is in love with a dress that she
saw in the shop window of a shop in the Sant

Mark:
“She will be really pretty”, “she’ll be gorgeous”,
pibe, “mate” or something like that. Just one
other thing about Sant Miquel; that’s S-A-N-T M-IQ-U-E-L. And it’s normally known as the Carrer
Sant Miquel in Mallorquín but of course that’s the
same as la calle San Miguel.

En castellano, claro. Ok, let’s continue on.
Latino América y revistas de viajes.
Mark:
So “I will eat in the centre”, comeré por el centro.
Preferably not in one of the very touristy
restaurants right in the centre of Mallorca.
Carmen: Because it might be expensive?
Mark:
It might be expensive and the food quality won’t
be nearly as good. If you take one street over
and you’ll find much nicer restaurants. So comeré
por el centro, I’m sure by this time Rory knows
exactly where to eat. Y por la tarde me daré una
vuelta por la biblioteca “and in the afternoon” or
“afterwards, I will give a…”
Carmen: “A round”?
Mark:
“A round”. Yeah, it doesn’t really sound right
when we say it literally. Dar una vuelta means to
go for a journey, to take a trip to the library. Me
daré una vuelta por la biblioteca, “I’ll take a little
trip to the library” y miraré algunas guías de
Latino América “and have a look at some guides
of Latin America” y revistas de viajes “and travel
magazines”.

La verdad es que me gusta planificar los viajes y
siempre leo muchísimo antes de decidir a dónde voy.
Mark:
“The truth is”, “to tell the truth, I really like
planning journeys”, planificar los viajes y siempre
leo muchísimo “and I always read lots” antes de
decidir a dónde voy “before deciding where to
go”. He then goes on:
Después recogeré a María del trabajo e iremos a
cenar.
Mark:
So “afterwards, I’ll pick up María from work” e
iremos a cenar “and we will go for dinner”, “we’ll
go out for dinner”.
Será un día intenso, pero hay que aprovechar los días
libres, ¿no?
Mark:
A very important thing. “It will be an intense day”,
“a very busy day” pero hay que aprovechar los
días libres, “but you need to take advantage of
your time off”, “your days off” or “you need to
make the most of your days off”.
Carmen: There’s also another expression in English that I
like. “To seize the day”, is that right, Mark?

To seize the day, yeah. The translation of the Latin
carpe diem.
Carmen: Sí.
Mark:
Seize the day! Yeah so you need to aprovechar
los días libres. Muy bien.
Mark:
So “Alejandro, it has been a pleasure to see you
and to spend some days with you”. A parte de
haber encontrado un tesoro, claro, “apart from
having found a treasure of course”.
