April 17, 2016, Fourth Sunday of Easter
Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
God speaks to his family in a myriad of ways: cosmic events [creation] — bringing us to life — leaving us a
love letter — sacraments and sacramentals — his call to universal holiness — etc. Consider if your child had the
ambition and the ability to become an architect. The vast majority of parents would encourage this interest, even
helping their child to research which colleges might be best. But the same parents [even good Catholic dads and
moms] often experience reservations about their son or daughter being called to a vocation.
We all must search our souls as to why this reaction may rise up in us. After all, the interest in your son or
daughter might just be the voice of God calling your child to a vocation to this life. Why would we resist such a
call? True happiness comes from following God’s will for our lives, whatever it may be!
The fourth Sunday of Easter is always from the 10th chapter of John’s Gospel, the Good Shepherd. It is World
Day of Prayer for Vocations. Prayer has a powerful effect when we truly open out minds, hearts and wills to God’s
presence in our lives. Sometimes our prayer is for those we love to be healed, successful, at peace, etc. Other
times our prayer intercedes for others [remember those who lowered their friend through the roof to be near
Jesus. cf. Lk 5:19]
I ask all our parishioners to pray a Rosary for Vocations. This rosary reflects
the Luminous Mysteries given to us by St. Pope John Paul II.
†
†
†
†
†
The First Luminous Mystery — The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan.
Our prayer intention — Our fulfillment of the universal call to holiness.
The Second Luminous Mystery — The Miracle of Cana. Our prayer
intention — Vocations to marriage.
The Third Luminous Mystery — The Proclamation of the
Kingdom— Our prayer intention —Vocations to the Permanent Diaconate.
The Fourth Luminous Mystery — The Transfiguration. Our prayer
intention — Vocations to Religious Life.
The Fifth Luminous Mystery — The Institution of the Eucharist.
Our prayer intention — Vocations to the Priesthood.
In the Diocese of Grand Island, Nebraska, one priest has charge of five parishes. He celebrates Mass at
three parishes one week and two the next week. In the United States and Canada, there are 5,200 parishes
without their own priest. Let us pray that more young people will be ready to answer, “Yes,” when they
receive the vocational call to priesthood or religious life; for without the priest there will be no one to follow
Jesus’ mandate, Do this in memory of me, so we will have the Eucharist.
This week pray with your children for vocations. For young children a simple, yet profound, prayer, “Jesus, I
want to want what you want!” Maybe we should all pray that prayer.
Another beautiful prayer to help us discern the will of God for our lives was written by Blessed Charles de
Foucauld: Father, I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank
you: I am ready for all, I accept all. Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures - I wish no more
than this, O Lord. Into your hands I commend my soul: I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love
you, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands without reserve, and with boundless
confidence, for you are my Father.
Let us never fear encouraging our children in their heart and soul to discover God’s plan for them. They are
even more precious to him than to us. Let us pray to want for children what Jesus wants from and for them.
Pax et bonum,
Msgr. Bill

Baseball and marijuana were his life. The future
Br. Lazarus, a talented baseball player, was simply too
cool to play by the rules. Blessed with great sports success, and convinced he walked on water, he ignored and
then failed his classes, and ultimately lost his scholarship
after a car accident in which alcohol and drugs were involved. His “cool” future in ruins, he began his first serious conversations with God about who he was and what
he was doing. Naïve in his faith, but knowing God had
put desires in his heart, he realized that his misspent years
had “stolen life from God.” Br. Lazarus describes, in remarkably warm and expressive language, his increasing
desire to give everything to Christ, and to adopt the example of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal whose behavior taught him everything he needed to know about
service to others. “Why wouldn’t I want to give my life
to Christ? It’s what I was born to do.” he says.
If you need players to form a foursome,
we will match you up. If you don't play,
you can still register for the Crawfish

St. Jude League Enrollment
Mass Intentions
Upcoming Vocation Awareness for Women
Why do Catholics offer Masses for the dead? When we
die in God’s friendship we eventually go to Heaven, but
if we haven’t properly atoned for certain sins we have to
be purified in Purgatory first. We pray for the souls in
Purgatory to help them pass through faster than they
would otherwise. Please see Paulette Blackburn in the
Apostolic Center for your Mass Intention requests.
St. Jude League is opened for enrollment throughout the
year. Membership for enrollment is $5.00 for the year.
The 6:45 A.M. Mass each Tuesday is celebrated for intentions of those enrolled in the League. St. Jude is a
powerful intercessor for anyone in need. Membership
Cards are available by the St. Jude Shrine in our church.

Volunteer Accountant Needed
Fr. John Ugobueze, who lives with us here at St.
Vincent de Paul Parish, has begun a multi-year
project to build a high quality, Western-style hospital
in a rural area of Nigeria. A team of experienced
professionals in the healthcare field including a
hospital design architect and a major Houston law
firm have already volunteered to help. To complete
our team of professionals we will need the assistance
of an Accountant. Because of the transnational nature
of this project we would prefer the pro bono
assistance of a national accounting firm that has an
association with a Nigerian accounting firm.
Early in his vocation, Fr. John served for 10
years as pastor of a rural Nigerian parish where he
personally worked with countless poor, sick,
disabled, and mentally disabled parishioners who
often suffered serious illnesses. Some suffered
painful deaths because quality medical services were
too far away or too expensive. This hospital project
for rural Nigeria has the blessing of the Nigerian
Archbishop of Onitsha, Anambra state.
If you are a Accountant with a major accounting
firm, please volunteer to help Fr. John in moving this
work of mercy closer to becoming a reality. You may
leave a message for Fr. John at the Parish Office:
713-667-9111 or contact Father John: 217-530-2610.
Fr. John serves as a Chaplain at DeBakey
Houston VA Hospital.

predicar a Cristo.
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
