On the minds of
Second Grade teachers…

Segundo Grado…
Summer is approaching, and we want your
kids to have FUN! We encourage them to
swim, swing, and slide, as long as it’s not
sliding BACK in reading. “Experts agree that
children who read during the summer gain
reading skills, while those who do not often
slide backward” according to Reading Is
Fundamental. What is worse than your kids
working so hard all year long, just to fall
behind? Sadly, there is something worse: the
loss of teaching time that it means when the
year starts up again. A report from the
National Summer Learning Association stated
that “It’s common for teachers to spend at
least a month re-teaching material that
students have forgotten over the summer.
That month of re-teaching eliminates a month
that could have been spent on teaching new
information and skills.” So, a summer off of
reading affects not only your child, but
potentially the whole class that they are in
next year! While you arrange your summer
schedule this year, finding sitters or activities
for your child, along with entering your
students into Scott’s FREE SUMMER SCHOOL,
grab a book list from your library, and get your
kids ready to read! For more information on

El verano se acerca, y nosotros queremos que los
niños(a) se DIVERTAN! Nosotros les motivamos a
nadar, columpiarse, y deslizarse mientras que no
se deslicen hacia ATRAS en la lectura. "Expertos
concuerdan que los niños(a) que leen durante el
verano ganan habilidades de lectura, mientras los
otros que no lo hacen deslizan hacia atrás"
según Leer Es Fundamental. ¿Qué hay mas peor
que sus niños trabajen duramente todo año, para
sólo atrasarse? Lamentablemente, hay algo aun
más peor: la pérdida de tiempo de enseñanza que
significa cuando el año empieza otra vez. Un
informe del Asociación Nacional de Aprendizaje
de Verano indicó que "Es común para maestros
gastar por lo menos un mes re-enseñanza de
material que los estudiantes han olvidado
durante el verano. Ese mes de re-enseñanza
elimina un mes que pudiera haber sido usado en
enseñar nueva información y habilidades". ¡Así,
que un verano sin leer afecta no sólo su niño(a),
pero potencialmente la clase entera en la que
estarán en el año próximo! ¡Mientras hace
arreglos para su verano este año, buscando
niñeras o actividades para su niño(a), y
mandando a sus estudiantes a la ESCUELA de
VERANO GRATIS de Scott, tome una lista de libros
de su biblioteca, y que sus niños(a) se preparen

wonderful turnout on those two days.

Million Minutes of Reading continues
Our Million Minutes of Reading project continues! Please help your child log the number of minutes read at
home or the number of minutes read by you to your child. Then, please have your child return the log at the
beginning of the following month. Please watch for April’s reading log.
January’s logs totaled: PreK-2,080 minutes; Kindergarten-10,460 minutes; 1st grade-2,298 minutes; 2nd grade2,065 minutes; 3rd grade-1,973 minutes; 4th grade-2,331 minutes; 5th grade-9,130 minutes; and Staff-5,495 minutes. Congratulations, kindergartners for having the most minutes read! Also, congratulations to the 1,000+
minute student readers: 5th grade – Erica Morales, Erica Silva, and Valeria Soto; 4th grade – Paloma Bolanos.

Our guest author is Stephen T. Johnson from Lawrence, Kansas. His books include Alphabet City, City by
Numbers, and A Is for Art. His website is www.stephentjohnson.com. The presentation times are: 9:15-10:00
a.m. - 4th/5th grades, 10:15-10:55 a.m. - Preschool (in the library), 1:15-2:00 p.m. - Kindergarten/1st grades,
and 2:20-3:05 p.m. - 2nd/3rd grades.
BOGO Book Fair (Buy One, Get One free) – May 13-17
The last full week of school, the library media center will host its BOGO book fair. In addition, each student who
has returned all of his/her books and has no overdue fines will be able to select a book from the book fair to
keep for his/her very own. This is the fifth year Title I funds have helped us sponsor this event. Please help
your student return all of his/her books. Thank you for your help with this.
We Need You:
The library would love to have you as a volunteer! Any amount of time would be appreciated! Volunteers are
always welcome in the library. Thank you to our school and community volunteers – Mrs. Anna Woods (Zen’s
mother) and Mrs. Marilyn Brobst and Mrs. Pat Booth. If you would like to volunteer, please contact me, Ethel

Student Council
Student Council has two community service projects for second semester. The first
project is collecting ’s pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. We will
be
collecting through the end of April.
The second project is Project Topeka. Our final count will be posted in
the front hallway. Thank you to all who contributed food items.
Lastly, Student Council is sponsoring a Talent Show for 3rd, 4th, and 5th
graders to be held in May. Please be watching for a letter/permission form and later
for more information. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Laura Bentler
or Mrs. Ethel Edwards at 235-7480.

Consejo Estudiantil
Consejo estudiantil tiene dos proyectos de servicio comunitario este semestre. El
primer proyecto es colectar etiquetas de las latas de soda de aluminio para la
organización de la casa de Ronald McDonald. Nosotros estaremos
recogiéndolas hasta el fin de abril.
El segundo proyecto es proyecto Topeka. Nuestra cuenta final está
escrita en el pasillo de enfrente. Gracias a todos los que han
contribuido trayendo artículos alimenticios.
Por último, El Consejo Estudiantil estará patrocinando una exposición de talentos
para los de 3ro, 4to, y 5to grado se llevara a cabo en mayo. Por favor espere recibir

Kansas State Assessments
Begin April 3, 2013
The third, fourth, and fifth grade students of Scott
Magnet School begin taking their state reading and
math assessments on April 3, 2013. You will be
receiving your child’s goal sheet in the mail. Here are
some things you can do to help your child be successful
on the test:
Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep each
night.
Make sure your child has a good breakfast.
Make sure your child comes to school on time.
Have a conversation with your child about doing his/
her best on the test!
Ask him/her questions about what will be on the
test.

de Kansas empezaran el 3de abril del 2013
Los estudiantes de tercero, cuarto y quinto grado de la
