Pope Francis and Respect Life Sunday
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
With the visit of Bishop Strickland on Wednesday evening to install me pastor of St. Edward’s,
and with a tragic funeral of a five-year-old girl on Thursday (please pray for this family: <http://
www.hannigansmith.com/book-of-memories/2253516/Miranda-Moreno-Cristel/obituary.php>), I did
not have the time I had wanted to write down my reflections on Pope Francis’ apostolic visit to the United States. There are already some great commentaries online (links on the diocesan website are especially helpful: <dioceseoftyler.org>), and I think it fair to say that his visit was a healing and teaching
moment for the Church here in America. Since today is Respect Life Sunday, I would like to highlight
Pope Francis’ words to Congress: “The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and
defend human life at every stage of its development.” Similarly, he told the UN that there must be
“absolute respect for life in all its stages and dimensions.”
One great aspect about living in East Texas is the general acceptance that human life begins at
conception. Most people around here would consider themselves Pro-Life to some degree. There is little hostility towards us who believe in the dignity of human life at all its stages, and thankfully, there are
not many who openly believe that abortion should be kept legal. Nevertheless, our belief in the sacredness of human life requires action — not just speech. It is easy to talk about the need for the legal guarantee to the right to life, but it can be difficult to take a public stand. That is why I think it is important
to keep this tradition of (at least) once a year having a public event in which we pray and show the local
community that we as Pro-Life individuals are ready to make sacrifice to build a culture of life.
In my last assignment in Centerville/Hilltop Lakes, I coordinated the first-ever Life Chain in Leon Co. for four consecutive years. The Life Chain <lifechain.net> is a peaceful, Pro-Life witness at a
public place each year on the first Sunday of October. This year, I am starting the Life Chain here in
Athens. I have invited Catholic parishes and other Christian communities of Henderson Co. to join us in
the Life Chain today at 2:00-3:30 p.m. at the Henderson Co. Courthouse in Athens. We will hold signs
and pray for an end to abortion and for the legal guarantee to the right to life. We will also pray for
mothers in difficult situations, and for fathers to take seriously their responsibilities. I ask you, my parishioners, to prayerfully consider joining the Life Chain today. Together let us stand up for life and pray
that our country will become a civilization of love.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Con la visita del Obispo Strickland el miércoles por la tarde para instalarme como el pastor de

obituary.php>), no tuve el tiempo que había querido para anotar mis reflexiones sobre la visita apostólica del Papa Francisco a los Estados Unidos. Hay ya algunos gran comentarios en línea (los enlaces en la
página web de la diócesis son especialmente útiles: <dioceseoftyler.org>), y pienso que es justo decir
que su visita fue una curación y enseñanza para la Iglesia aquí en América. Hoy como es el domingo del
día de Respetar la Vida, me gustaría destacar las palabras del Papa Francisco al Congreso: “La Regla de
Oro también nos recuerda de nuestra responsabilidad de proteger y defender la vida humana en cada
etapa de su desarrollo”. Del mismo modo, él le dijo a las Naciones Unidas que debe haber “un respeto
absoluto a la vida en todas sus etapas y dimensiones”.
Uno de los grandes aspectos acerca de la vida en el este de Texas es la aceptación general que la
vida humana comienza en el momento de la concepción. La mayoría de la gente de aquí se consideraría
Pro-Vida en cierta medida. Hay poca hostilidad hacia nosotros que creemos en la dignidad de la vida
humana en todas sus etapas y, afortunadamente, no hay muchas personas que abiertamente creen que el
aborto debe ser legal. No obstante, nuestra creencia en el carácter sagrado de la vida humana exige acción – no sólo discurso. Es fácil hablar de la necesidad de la garantía legal del derecho a la vida, pero
puede ser difícil tomar una posición. Por eso creo que es importante mantener esta tradición de (al menos) una vez al año de tener un acontecimiento público en el cual rezamos y mostramos a la comunidad
local que como individuos contra el Aborto estamos listos para hacer el sacrificio para construir una cultura de vida.
En mi última cesión de Centerville/Hilltop Lakes, coordine la primerísima Cadena de Vida del
Condado de León por cuatro años consecutivos. La Cadena de Vida <lifechain.net> es una manera pacífica de mostrar que somos Pro-Vida, en un lugar público cada año el primer domingo de octubre. Este
año, estoy comenzando la Cadena de Vida aquí en Athens. He invitado a parroquias Católicas y otras
comunidades Cristianas del condado de Henderson a que se unan a nosotros en la Cadena de Vida hoy
de las 2:00 a 3:30 p.m. en la corte del condado de Henderson en Athens. Va a ver carteles y rezaremos
para un fin al aborto y la garantía legal al derecho a la vida. Vamos a orar también por las madres en situaciones difíciles, y para que los padres tomen en serio sus responsabilidades. Les pido a mis feligreses,
que consideren la posibilidad de unirse a la Cadena de Vida hoy. Debemos unirnos para proteger la vida

A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP STRICKLAND ON RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY
Respect Life Sunday will be observed on Oct. 4, 2015. The Diocese of Tyler will that day begin a week of prayer for those
whose sacred dignity it threatened and for the re-conversion of heart of our Nation. I ask the active participation of every
parish and mission. I invite all people of good will to join us in prayer throughout the week of Oct. 4-10. We have seen the
darkness of the abortion industry in the horribly shocking videos that have come out disclosing the practices of Planned
Parenthood. Thankfully, the State of Texas has taken steps to protect life from conception until birth, but more still can be
done. Our concern can not be only to eliminate abortion in our nation. Sadly, there is continual pressure brought against
respecting life in its last stages. Indeed, the lives of many in our society are considered valueless. We as Christians need to
affirm that every life is worth living. Please plan on participating in this important week of prayer. I would encourage at
least one day of fasting as part of your observance. I am hopeful that many parishes/missions will host a Holy Hour during
the week.
