PARISH LIFE
ARCHDIOCESAN COLLECTION
PRIEST RETIREMENT FUND
On June 11 and 12 all parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be asked to give generously to support the Retirement Fund
for Archdiocesan Priests. Currently, the fund provides for more than
100 priests who are retired. Over the next ten years, that number is
expected to increase significantly. With minimal compensation, and in
many cases, no pension, these men often retire with nothing to fall
back upon. Your contributions can change that.
The Priest Retirement Fund offers us a way to give back to our Catholic
priests who have served us so faithfully. Your contribution will help
archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in retirement. Help
us offer thanks for their years of devotion to God, and faithful service
to our parish communities. Envelopes will be in the carts next to the
church doors.
HOPE AND LIFE
Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates
the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son
had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only
support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son
was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose
all hope.
Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to
life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s
second reading.
What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the
dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may
not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel
openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Unless Professor Einstein’s theory of relativity can be translated into
any useful kind of time-travel, most of our clues about life in the early
church will have to come from ancient letters and ancient prayer texts.
A prayer text from a dusty library may yield, for example, an understanding of what “presbyters” actually did. We have such a prayer from
the early third century from the hand of Hippolytus of Rome. While our
modern prayers derive a great deal from his, some of the practices of
the ancient church have fallen away. In his day, bishops were chosen by
the people, and the other bishops merely consented. Presbyters, by
contrast, seem to have been chosen by the bishops. This makes sense,
since it allowed the bishops to hand-pick their most trusted advisers.
It seems that bishops were at first reluctant to share their presiding at
the Eucharist with presbyters. In fact, by the time of the fourth-century
church’s growth spurt in Rome, the bishop sent deacons out with fragments of the host from his Eucharist to drop into the chalices of the
presbyters at the outlying eucharistic celebrations. We still have a vestige of this fermentum in the Mass today, a reminder of the early bishops’ desire to give a powerful sign of the unity of all celebrations of the
Eucharist with their ministry, and a clue to their reluctance to delegate
a sacramental ministry to the presbyters.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Our annual summer fundraising festival event theme for 2016 is,
“A weekend in Winnetka, Celebrating Diversity United by Faith.” Our
festival will be held this year on June 10, 11, and 12, with such a diverse parish and community, the idea of the theme seems only right.
This sacrament of healing is received by those who are
seriously ill, approaching serious surgery, or near death.
Please contact the Parish Center to arrange a convenient time. If a parishioner who has not been anointed is
near death, please call the Parish Center at any hour.
Presale tickets for the 2016 SJW festival are on sale now. You may purchase them at the Gift Shop, School and Religious Education offices,
Parish Center, or from your community leaders. This year, we are
switching to an “all ticket” system for both food and rides. So be sure to
purchase your food and ride tickets early to save some money.
DONUTS AND COFFEE

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Pool safety is about more than swimming
Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat
during the summer. Parents should teach their children
about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle
uncomfortable situations. Although you may be watching
closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t
forget about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the
pool, using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children
what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let
them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For information and a copy of the article
called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips to Teach Children” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited,

St. Joseph the Worker
WHERE THERE’S A WILL THERE’S A WAY
St. Joseph the Worker is a special place, where we are
touched daily by God’s presence among us. Rooted in
the legacy of our founding parishioners, we have become
the dynamic faith community we cherish today. A gift to
the future of our parish will support its spiritual richness
and many good works for generations to come.
Please remember St. Joseph the Worker in your will or
trust. To learn more about planned giving opportunities
that can benefit St. Joseph the Worker, please contact
the Parish Center or Kimberly Jetton, Planned Giving
Manager, Archdiocese of Los Angeles; (213) 637-7504;
[email protected].
To make a gift: Our correct legal title is: The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles, A Corporation Sole, for
the benefit of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church
PARISH REGISTRATION
To promote a spirit of belonging, we encourage all who
worship here to become registered parishioners. Having
registered makes the process much easier when it is
time for infant baptism, school or religious education
enrollment, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or
confirmation sponsor, and funerals. Simply attending
Mass here does not make you a registered parishioner.
Please call or visit the Parish Center to request a registration form or complete the form online at the parish
website: www.sjwchurch.com. Also, please contact the
Parish Center if you have a new address or phone number. The staff is able to serve you better if the parish
records are accurate.
REQUESTING USE OF PARISH FACILITIES
Parish and School groups that would like to reserve any
facility in the parish must contact Angela Escobar in the
Parish Center (818) 341-6634, ext. 1003. Only rooms
reserved in advance are open. If your group needs to
cancel a reservation, please let Angela know so that the
room can be made available to another group. Also, if
your group needs a particular room arrangement, please
bring a copy of the requested floor plan to the Parish
Center a week ahead.
BULLETIN AND MASS ANNOUNCEMENTS
The deadline (strictly observed) for submission of Bulletin and Mass announcements is the previous Monday at
noon. Deliver a copy of the bulletin or Mass announcement to the Parish Center or email it to Angela Escobar:
[email protected]. To submit a photo to
accompany the bulletin text, send a digital file (jpeg or
TIF), color or black/white, 300 dpi. See the front cover
for the parish mailing address and fax number. For more
information please contact Angela Escobar, (818) 3416634, ext. 1003.
